    Allow corporal punishment back in the schools and protect the teachers from lawsuits.

    Teach reading using a combination of phonics and whole language.

    Take computers out of elementary schools. Elementary by definition means THE BASICS. Teach the basics of math, science, reading, writing, penmanship, etc..

    Take calculators out of elementary schools. Make 'em learn their damned times tables!

    End zero tolerance. Make administrators use common sense on a case by case basis.

    End political correctness. We have no use or time for such foolishness.

    Pass the freaking school vouchers laws. Make government schools compete for students. competition = good; monopoly = bad

    Speech class for everybody. I'm getting tired of needing a translator!

    Allow teachers who have concealed carry permits to pack heat on campus. The students don't need to know which teachers have guns; they just need to know that some might have guns.

    Get the parents involved. Do whatever it takes.

    Coming to your defense here.

    How can a reasonable response to a post be off-topic? That's just stupid and childish. This is just one more example of how left-leaning you slashdotters have become. It's the reason why I rarely ever post here even as an AC.

    Corporations? Do you slackers realize how many of us have retirements that depend on corporations earning LOTS of money? Leave my damned retirement alone! Or do you really , really, really want a civil war?

    The solution is simple - don't buy it. We had a chance way back when sports and movies became pay-per-view to kill the idea, but we blew it. Too many people rolled over and paid for a football game, a boxing match, or a movie that they just *had* to see.

    If we go that route, then I hope you have damned good homeowner's insurance because I'm getting pretty sick and tired of paying for those who won't buy enough insurance to cover their loss in case of hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods.

    As far as a long search and rescue being an extra expense, that's why we pay taxes to begin with. If budgeting doesn't cover a long search, then maybe somebody with a brain should do the budgeting. It will happen; prepare for it.

    Agreed. I pay taxes for services, so if they're going to charge me for a service, then I shouldn't have to pay the tax. That's why people around here reject any proposal of new taxes.

    A lot of the websites seem to be designed for 800x600. Lowes just redesigned theirs and now there's a ton of whitespace on the right side of my wide screen.

    I've never had one fail either. Among the ones I have that are still working are -- a Quantum 8GB, several Western Digital 20GB & 40GB drives, 20GB Seagate (still use it every day in a SimplyMEPIS system), and a 3GB Maxtor that runs a Damn Small Linux system. These old drives are useful for fun projects, but I'd never trust any of my important data with them. Drives *can* fail; I know because I've heard rumors about failures. :)

    I still have a 20 MB hard drive that I bought for my Atari 520ST way back in the early 90s! It worked the last time I used it a few years ago.

    The method to use is to replace the one or two lights you use the most with LEDs, and then, over time, replace the rest of the lights in your house as you can afford them (or as the prices come down).

    That's what I did with the CF lights. I bought the first few back when they were high-priced, and then as the prices fell, I replaced all the lights in the house. I'll probably do the same with LEDs.

    I propose we put a camera in Mayor Daley's office, and any other place we damn well please. Maybe we should also be able to track them using GPS. And how about all elected "public servants" being made to take random drug tests?

    Elected officials and people who are paid from taxpayers' money work FOR US. We are their employers. We have every right to know what they're doing at work, where they are during the work day, and what drugs they're taking.

    I was talking mainly about 2-lane roads, hence the reference to 55. On an interstate I don't mind if you go any speed you want as long as you're not in front of me. I travel for a living, not sight-seeing, and time is money. Don't cost me $$ or you *will* get on my bad side.

    My view is that if the car is incapable of going the speed limit, it should be off the road. If the driver is incapable of driving the speed limit, their license should be revoked.

    One day I'm going to shoot somebody on U.S. 231 here in Alabama. Apparently very few of the rednecks can read a freaking sign that says 55. Forty-five with nothing in front of you doesn't cut it in my book.

    Thanks, but I never said that I don't know how to prevent getting spam. I haven't been robbed, raped or murdered, but I still hate robbers, rapists, and murderers.

    I don't want *any* unsolicited bulk email no matter who it's from. Not all spam is advertising naughty products.
