That's an insane amount of images - and all in RAW format? That's a pretty big database to store and catalog them.

    From the article:

SI's photo department currently burns and stores DVDs using two Disc NSM 7000 DVD jukeboxes, each of which holds more than 500 discs. Jache says he will have two more jukeboxes by year-end. In all, the magazine uses more than 100 servers and possesses 30 terabytes of hard drive storage capacity as well as 24 terabytes of near-line DVD storage.
I guess you could call that database "big".

Damn! Should have read the article first:
Staff photographer Bob Rosato's collection of gear is fairly typical. To a football game he takes four or five EOS-1D bodies and 600mm f/4, 400mm f/2.8, 300mm f/2.8, 70-200mm f/2.8, and 50mm f/1.4 lenses. For basketball, he adds five or six EOS-1Ds cameras and dispenses with the 400 and 600mm lenses. Of the ten or so camera bodies that he takes to a basketball game, many are of course mounted overhead or around the basket for remote operation.
    Camera equipment ain't cheap.

So what if the graphics card lasts half as long. You can buy a 9600 now for $150. Then replace it in two years for another $150 when Doom 4 comes out. Still cheaper than buying a $300 card now. Besides a 9800 is overkill until Doom 3/Half-Life 2 come out anyway, unless you have a 21" monitor running at 1600x1200. Anything less, and a 9600 can run perfectly fine (again, until Doom 3/Half-Life 2.) It will certainly run GTA fine, which I ran on my GeForce 4200 and 1Ghz Athlon without any problems. Plus, original poster said that he was using a 4 year old card. After 4 years, any card is an improvement.

As for age, he's entitled to his opinion, but I play games in my late 30's. I know people in their 40's and 50's who regularly play PS2 games and PC games. To use his belabored Hollywood comparison, most people seem to realize that, just as there are movies for children and adults, there are also video games for children and adults.

His point was that adults don't have the time to play games that high school and college guys do. I agree. I'm 32 with a wife, kid, and job. Everytime I read a great review of a game, I'm tempted to buy it. Then the logical part of my brain says to me, "you have maybe 2 free hours a week. How are you ever going to finish the 40 hour game?" The reality is that I won't. I'll buy a game and it'll sit in the drawer for weeks until I finally have a free 30 minutes to play. I don't have the free time to play RPG games or pretty much anything other than sports games. And even sports games, I don't have the time to become really good at a game, so I'll never play it on-line.

If I didn't have a wife and child, I'm sure that I would be playing games hours at a time like I did 10 years ago. But I don't. And the same is true of many adults.

The problem is caused by the credit card companies being overzealous in protecting themselves. (Cardholders are automatically protected against fraud, so credit card companies are only protecting themselves when they turn your card off because of suspected fraud.) The problem (in my case) was solved by calling customer service to explain to them that it is you who is on travel. I wasn't stuck without a roof over my head. I had a half hour of inconvenience.

There's a trade-off to be taken into consideration before credit card companies freeze your card. If you are legitimately using your credit card in an "abnormal" manner, you can be stuck with a frozen card. This has happened to me twice. The day after I received a new AMEX card, I went out of state on business travel. Naturally, AMEX thought it was suspicious that a card mailed to AZ on a Monday was being used in CA on a Thursday. It took me a long time to convince them that I was on the level.

Later, after not using my AMEX card for months, I charged a lot of money in CA. Next thing you know, my card is being declined and I can't even fill up my gas tank anymore.
