  2. Re:Metric Everywhere on Astronauts Having Trouble With Tranquility Module · · Score: 1

The US Army makes heavy use of Metric over Imperial. Especially when it comes to measuring distance. There are zero Maps that are measured in miles. Shooting is done at 50m to 300m targets or 400m to 1km with larger weapons. Flash to bang is metric.. you see a flash and start counting seconds.. multiply that by 340m (or 333m) and you get distance to the target. Round sizes are in millimeter, m16/m4 rifle is 5.56mm, m9 pistol is 9mm, m242 auto-cannon is 25mm, mk19 automatic grenade launcher is 40mm, Abrams tank is 120mm.. the exception is of course the M2 .50cal machine gun because it was made in 1920's and still heavily used today.

Height and Weight are still Imperial. The 2-mile run PT event is still imperial... land-navigation and ruck marches are metric though.

You get a really good feel for kilometers when you walk them over and over and keep tabs on distances to everything. You also get a good feel for 50meters, 100meters and so on by shooting at man-sized targets for those distances. Though i don't recommend these methods of learning metric to the general us public.. it does work.

What really drives me nuts is when people talk in football fields... gah! the horror!

My guess is that weight isn't the issue, it's volume size and overflow into adjacent seats. Could a fat man fly if he didn't have any checked bags? Could a high density, heavily muscled, guy get kicked off because he weighs too much but is compact enough to not overflow the seat? If it is weight dependent, couldn't a fat man pay the extra $10 in fuel?.. or reduce his baggage weight? I think it has to do with seat overflow.. which is related to weight but more about volume.

All true. But a contractor knows that from the day he/she signs up.. his paycheck could end the next week.

I've been seeing something similar happen to the US Army. They have converted many jobs from military to civilian in the belief that they don't have to increase the size of the army, just get more people out from behind desks and into the field. More trigger pullers and less support folks. So now they have to drag overpaid contractors along to established FOBs to handle the higher level support functions.

The only solution i can think of is hiring these engineers and so on into permanent positions on the condition that they will have to move as the work moves.

You're crazy.. copyright is very important. As an intesting example you could say that microsoft could take any gpl/open source code and use it (then sell it) without penalty. Nobody could stop them. But nobody could get any of MS's source unless it was stolen.

Another example. You form a band and make a fantastic song. At one of your little bar shows a guy records the song. He is a music scout.. he has the cash to really get your song out there... but he doesn't need you. So he takes your lyrics, your song, and gets it out on the radio and selling it on CDs in walmart. You get nothing and can't stop him. If that doesn't make sense i'll try another.. and on topic this time.

You write a book (you're a full time writer) about some random sci-fi scenerio you've been thinking about since a kid. You want to sell it and make money. So you print like 1,000 and bind them with your own equipment. One of the people who bought it really loved it.. but they have the connections and money to really push the book so they take it (not illegal) and republish it minus your name (not illegal anymore). They stole your book and there is nothing you can do about it.. they did not commit any crime.

A world without copyright? You're crazy.

I do agree with you that military service doesn't blend well with free-thinking folks. I can't see why a non-conformist would join such a rules/regulations based organization. But i'd like to put forth that Clear goals and purpose are attractive to many people including free-thinkers. So many people have treasure troves of knowledge and skills that they don't have a reason to apply.. sometimes a person will accept discomfort for the opportunity to become useful to a large group of people.. at the expense of themselves. To have purpose is everything.

Yikes, you threw a lot of stereotypes out there.

Women can join any US military branch but cannot (as in not allowed) perform Combat duties. You can join the US Army at 42 without a waiver.. so 30 is not too old. Gay men and women are tolerated because they are just as good as everyone else.. the problem comes in when a guy is sitting on the bench outside the shower room watching everyone go in and out (this happens!) and everyone freaks out and stereotypes all gay guys to be that way.

Finally, most services are very regimented and rigid but all branches have their "weirdo" groups/units to put the special people into. Usually you have to earn your way in and not just be non-conformist. Which means you have to be able to play ball AND bring something extra to the table. If you can't bottle up your non-compliance and bring your special skillset.. you are a loose cannon and not wanted. Which is a good thing!
