  1. Re:Signal Details on Distress Signal Emitted By Flat-Screen TV · · Score: 5, Informative

You'll be waiting ~ 3-4 hours before somebody comes and finds you, if they are really good at it.

First, wait for a satellite pass will notify the Air Force. They will then verify it if they can, contact the FAA for missing flights, etc. The next call goes out to the Civil Air Patrol wing that is responsible for that area. They in turn will normally notify the local authorities who are in charge of S&R. Of course, when you broadcast on 121.5, that sound is audible in every Airtraffic Control center that it can reach.

Once they have done this, they will organize a ground based S&R party and try get a general area of where the signal is coming from. Remember, this is non-directional, so they have to go to a few different places, measure the direction and approx. strength of the signal, and then they will know about where it is. Triangulation sucks, esp. with trees and mountains.

Once they have done this, they'll start their search. Oh, if it's at night and it's not somewhere near them, they'll wait until the morning. Hope you don't keel over at night.

Finally, once they triangulate it, they home in on it. In this case, they homed it to an apartment. Questioned the guy, and went back out into the hallway and confirmed it was coming from there.

So, do you REALLY want a 121.5 ELT locator? I would get one of the new 406mhz ones which are digitally encoded with your information. In addition, some models offer GPS in them that will transmit your GPS coordinates when it sends it. Much nicer and easier to find.

Oh, and I'm not a CAP member any more. But, it was fun while I did it. Not enough time now, but, maybe after I'm done building my airplane I'll have time.

While XP isn't the greatest, it does do a lot of stuff. I can run all of those Adobe products that use to be exclusively Mac. My scanner works when I plug it in. I have software so I can launch X apps on my XP desktop at work. I can go and buy upgrades for a lot less $$. Now what does your MAC do that I can't do on a Windows/Linux box?

FireFox is distrubuted under the Mozilla Public License 1.1. Remember, software today is under "License", even source code. Section 6 of the Mozilla Public License dictates that "Netscape Communications Corporation (''Netscape'') may publish revised and/or new versions of the License from time to time. Each version will be given a distinguishing version number.".

Since AOL OWNS Netscape Communications Coporation as of the merger, they are free to relicense the product. But, they have reserved the right to change the license at any time they would like, including making new changes/versions private. Anybody could modify an existing version up to the license change. But, after that, even to add enhancements or HTML 5.0 standards, without their approval could spell disaster. At some point they can simply say that "We own it and you can't have it".

IANAL, but, I would always follow the money trail. It's not a government (back in the days of NCSA browser) poroject. But, rather an enterprise who needs to make money to survive. Nothing is free, not even in a global economy. Get rid of IE (I use Firefox now because IE is WAY behind the time and I hate ActiveX), and what do you have, another Monopoly.

While the open source license gives some security, at some point we have to prepared for the inevitibility of it becoming a commercial project and all those contributors being screwed out of their almost full time contributions at $0 pay.

Lets see, Put the CPU and DVD with the LCD screen. But, it's "NOT A LAPTOP". Then WTF is it? This is a horrible design by Apple to try to reinvent the Laptop and charge $x4 for it.

You can buy a good Dell laptop and put Linux on it and have just as many applications you can run without the crappy Mac "Single Pulldown Menu" GUI on it. How can somebody use this who has a brain. It's too hard to think about ONE application at a time. "did I click in the right window? Oh wait, that was Apple Paint program, I have 6 other Photoshop windows. But they all have the same menu. Whatever shall I do!?!"

If Dell released a machine that was a PC without a power supply (Let's face it, the MAC has an external DC power supply), was a hacked up with a DVD, and had USB ports everything external, people wouldn't pay over $400. But, since this is Apple, it's magical and worth $1200 for the barebones, $4k+ for a machine that did anything.

Oh, and don't give me the RISC/CISC debate. Sun has "SLOWlaris" for a reason. IT'S SLOW! So are Mac's now. Thank god for video accelorators. All of Apples claims are based on this after reviewing their site.
