  1. Oh hell no on Star Trek XI: Romulan Wars? · · Score: 1

Why, oh WHY are they going to do this? I don't pay 9+ dollars to see Star Trek when it's something that might not even be that interesting, considering the last movie (they killed off Data, the bastards), I mean come on Paramount, let's move on to DS9 or Voyager movies!

  2. Re:Some yes and some no on Does Your Company Pay For Broadband? · · Score: 1

Let me rephrase that, a cell phone is a recurring monthly expense, and if it's being used for company purposes, that bill should be covered by the company. Same for broadband, I use my personal internet connection to do work from home using my internet connection to VPN into the company, usually about 10 hours a week, thankfully my company pays for half my broadband bill because of this. They also pay for a company cell phone (which I only use for company purposes, I pay for my own personal cell phone), hence why I think it's important for a company to pay for such things, and the higher ups in my organization agree.

Wow, are you a member of management or what? If a Cell Phone/Pager is being used for company communication, then it should be covered by the company. If the internet connection is used for company purposes some of the time, then it should be paid for in part by the company, maybe not all of it, but if you have to use it for more than 5 hours a week for company purposes, then it should at lease be half covered by the company, however those are just me 2 cents.

I believe that as long as it's network security things, it's a good thing; however I would investigate any software they want to install on my system before I say yes or no. My work has a similar policy and I don't really have a problem with it on my laptop, because I did some checking and they can't do anything but patch security holes, and it lakes anything that infringes on privacy (such as reporting what websites are being hit, password loggers, etc), so if the software it self doesn't infringe on privacy, I think it's a good thing, well with Window$ machines at least :P

They could be like Cox and block all port 25 activity except for to the Cox servers, so you're forced to relay through them if you want to send out e-mail. Very effective, but a pain in the rear if you're running a mail server, however it does force you to keep within the lines of the User Agreement.

Nyet, these would be a very bad idea for So Cal, because everyone here goes the real speed limit (80 Mph not 65) and that means that the million + driver on the road would receive tickets. It's a conspiracy! If the Government put these on the I-5, they would get quite a few million in tickets and the Insurance companies would make even more because they would get to jack up insurance rates, and the gov would make more money in taxes off of the jacked up insurance rates...man...this had better be voted on not just enforced, else people are going to get real pissed.

I personally believe that Slackware is the best server implantation that you can go with. It's the most Unix distro IMHO. Also you deal with source files, not RPM's, personally I greatly dislike the use of binaries. The best thing is that Slackware is Free, and it's stable. I know a lot of different people whom have had problems with Redhat, switched them over to Slackware, which has a slightly higer learning curve, but, they were happy with Slack.

What everyone has to remember is it's not the transfer speeds that really matters IMHO. The additional available bandwith that is available is what the plus is for me. I had 14 computers on an 802.11b network and they crawled, now with a 802.11g AP, they cook, because they have more bandwidth to share. If they could come up with an AP that acts as a switch, now that would be cool!

I still use 802.11b devices, and a couple of 802.11g devices, however my entire wireless network boogies because it's not sharing 11 Mbps between all of the wireless computers, it's sharing 54 (33 actuall) between all of the computers, which makes things happen much more quickly :)

  17. Re:Is this profitable? on Build-to-Order Cars? · · Score: 2, Informative

I believe that the idea could be profitable, if they take the viewpoint of Dell. Dell has an assembly line, as will BTO:

"the assembly line--which resembles a street intersection."

Basically what I in-vision them doing is a process similar to dell. Basically as the car comes down the assembly line, each person has his or her own station (Frame, axle, drive train, engine, etc). Each car would have it's own "Identifier" number as it came down and at each point in the assembly process, the specific part would be put in. Traditionally, car manufacturers assembly lines have a person doing each job, putting in the same part, etc. This would simply differ, not completely change, from tradition. Instead of putting 10,000 CD Players in, and 5,000 Cassette players in, it would be a specific CD Player, or whichever way you want to look at it.

I think the thing that will make or break this company is the organization. If they can organize and get the processes correct they will succeed. For example, let's say you have 10 cars coming down the assembly line. You're in charge of stereos, you have all 10 stereos, in the order that the cars are coming down the line in. This is just a small example of one way of organizing the manufacturing process that needs to not only take place on the assembly line, but in the background to make sure that everyone has what they need, when they need it. The process and organization will be what makes or breaks this company.
