I might remind you that the iMac was the first PC to come with USB, and not only that, but they used a USB keyboard and mouse. It came with firewire of course, but that is because Apple, 10-some years ago realised something that you have yet to realise: Firewire and USB have different purposes. It's like saying the Parallel port had failed because hardly any modems that worked on it were made.

Well, you know, I think it is hard to qualify promoting one's knowledge as zealotry. MS certified pros (CPs) know one thing, managing Windows. Novell CPs (with whom I work) think Groupware and the N* solutions are the best in the market. Is that zealotry? No, I think it comes from understanding very well the solution you support. Instead of saying "for me, Windows 2003 server / Netware / Linux is the best OS for e-mail server / desktop etc." you simply say "it is the best and dismiss the rest".

I think up to here we agree.

The problem lies with the fact that you think it is the techie's job to have a global view of all IT development. I don't think they have to. Management does. If they don't have that knowledge they should find it somewhere in the market, but I hardly think that any CP should advocate a solution that would render his own training redundant. It is just not reasonable.

I fully agree with you that a zealot on either side is a zealot. I find the /. "advocating" process to be despicable. The end-user is not an idiot, he just wants to have things done on the computer and the sys admin to keep the network and their computers clean. That's it. They don't care that Microsoft are evil nor do they care that Linux is POSIX compatible therefore they can compile foo with little effort. I believe Novell's and Redhat's aproach to this is truly amazing and I also think that the "community's" blindness to simple market reality will mean they will end up harming Linux take-up rather than promoting it.

I sell Linux solutions for a living, from desktops to thin-client setups, so my view on this might be slightly tinted since I basically want to present a good-value and unique business offer to my market. I don't care about politics.

You know, I don't understand this slashdot obsession with MSCE or other MS certified professional. I don't understand why a good administrator of a Windows 2003 server in a Windows shop has to have anything but an encyclopedic knowledge of Linux or Macs. Companies hiring MS certified pros do so because they want them to manage their MS network.

The EU actually has an excellent documentation service. Typical to EU practices, however, the service is well hidden in the site (www.eu.int). You chose the languages you want to receive information on and you will start receiving a steady flux of documentation and (yes!) DVDs on EU procedings, including, for example, the proposed EU constitution. Failing that, calling EU services in your prefered language (contacts on the page) should mean they send you the required documentation.

Funny thing though, every time I move, the only way to change my address is to re-subscribe to the whole thing again... LONG LIVE EU!

I agree with you on principle. However, when I speak of democracy I don't really have the American model in mind. With all respect to your great country, calling your regime a Democracy or even a Replublic is stretching things a bit. You have a two party system that makes it impossible for a third political force to come to power or even be represented in Congress or Senate. The Senate is an anachronistic and certainly undemocraticly unrepresentative institution and the system of checks and balances does not involve the people - is the corrupt system to police itself?

I truly think if the great percentage of American people who do not vote started to vote, we would see a true revolution; however, as I have said before, apathy has become a valid political view. Your third party candidates say interesting things yet they are met with ridicule. You have a great percentage of people who are working yet live in poverty, and still no communist or socialist party - in fact these words are still taboo in your society, the reason being people have been conditioned to think they are the evil while they could lead to what your country needs most, redistribution of wealth through peaceful means.

Your No Treason link was very interesting although I wouldn't equate the lack of participation in the commons in the American society with the Prisoners' Dilemma.

You are, in so many words, wrong.

The system provides a mechanism for demonstrating your dissatisfaction. It is called the null or blank vote. It shows that you are interested in what is happening in your political system but no political force expresses your beliefs or supports your interests.

Sitting on a couch on election day does not "break the system" and apatyh is not a valid criticism of the futility of the system.

I would suspect most countries that went through dictatorships would have such mechanisms, however.

I am Greek and live in Portugal, I could very well not vote here, I do make a point to vote in European parliament and local elections.

I find it funny that you got modded a troll. It is, in fact, like this in many European countries - voting is obligatory, the idea being that a political power can manipulate the result of elections by making people afraid to vote. It is, in fact, a very valid point - voting is an obligation, not a right, and everything about it should point to that.

You just dreamt a 2.500 year old system. It was called "democracy" and it worked. Even down to the "lottery" for public office.

I also see from your post that you are thinking of not voting any more. I see this more and more in my generation (I'm 31 years old) and I hate it more and more. Not voting is NOT a political statement. Find a party or if nothing out there stands for what you stand for MAKE a party, even if it only gets one vote, yours. Or if you don't want the trouble go to the polling station and vote blank. A blank vote is a vote against ALL parties and shows yor dissatisfaction with them AND with the system. The main problem is that nowadays we have left politics to the professionals, and we forget that it is our OBLIGATION rather than our right to participate in the commons.

I have absolutely no sympathy towards people who say "I don't vote". Apathy is not a valid political point of view.
