WTF? Is there a study for this you can link? I've been using trackpoints for half a decade and the only thing that's ever gotten tired or strained is the tip of my finger (and the only thing that need move at all is the finger itself). Both pads and mice require far more movement. I doubt you've even touched a trackpoint before...
Whatever you choose, make sure it has good padding. I've lost a lappy hd or two due to having my laptop in a backpack and putting it down too hard (used to just books in there). The best type of padding is this strap that suspends the laptop from the top of the bag, but cushioning is OK too. I use the bag IBM gave me when I worked there so don't know where to get it actually.
Same thing goes for games like DOA Volleyball and BMX XXX - the sexual content adds nothing to the game, and only hurts the industry.
I don't see how it hurts anything. I played DOAVB and it was a fun game. I used to play super dodgeball and this volleyball game on my old Nintendo and playing DOAVB I realized how much I missed those and was glad someone picked up the genre. I didn't buy it for the babe content, but it was rather addicting seeing cute girls playing and hearing the well done game chatter go back and forth with music and nice beach island scenary to boot.
It was like a prefect day at the beach - it's rare for me to get all my friends together and good weather and everybody in the mood for a game, etc. I don't see how the uber cuteness hurt the game at all and soem of my female friends played it and were fine with it. The female models stemmed from the DOA fighting series where they aren't just treasured for their bouncing, but for their beautiful and well done quality that helps immerse you in the game - just as the scenary and models pulled it off again in DOAVB.
I suspect the author didn't play the game at all before denouncing it. Divorcing hot bodies from beach volleyball would take away one of the sweet benefits about it and improve nothing. Should we just go back to freaking 8-bit graphics and blue blood so you conservatives will be happy? If you're only there for the volleyball, just play the volleyball and let those of us who can enjoy beautiful art and scenary enjoy. Everybody wins leaving it in.
Let's see: the fastest PC workstations beat the Mac's in Photoshop. QT6 didn't even have two pass mpeg4 encoding for a long time and even now the quality/features are a joke compared to Xvid/Divx (which make use of things like b-frames, qpel, gmc). On Windows the QT browser plugin is terrible and doesn't even allow you to zoom or fullscreen from the right-click menu (and windows media player does) so I'm stuck digging the freaking URL out of the page just to watch the stream in something other than a miniscule box (I use high res and I'm not changing it for a video in a web page). The few professionals doing DVD work I've ever talked to used Maestro and Scenarist, both PC apps. IME the parent is right on about macs having lost their spot re encoding.
Looking at those screen shots reminded me of those pr0n images with celeb faces photoshopped in. Come on, where's the pasty white geek of a main character and that weight lifter with the bitch tits?
So anyway, I will refuse to buy without those lovable characters, hehehe. I'm scared to show my girlfriend, though, she might buy the game and play it as often as I play DOAX just to get even...
Some of the things listed are so chinzy...personally I would have listed that crappy Balrog fight Gandalf had as one of the most screwed up scenes in the trilogy.
Basically the Balrog thrashed around while Gandalf wailed on it, it was the worst actor-CG interaction I've ever seen. Screwing up one of the most powerful enemies like that also drove home the fact that all of the monsters were basically push overs.
Much worse than someone's hand moving off someone's shoulder and back between scenes, no?
I haven't seen the movie (and don't intend to), but those were likely Olog-hai - a special breed of trolls that can withstand sunlight via Sauron's power. Can always google for more info. ^^
You can run other dictionary programs on the 760 as well. So if you are used to looking things up in edict on wwwjdic you can easily keep doing edict lookups on the 760 with babbletower (which also supports flash cards). There are other programs like zbedic and qtjiten and other dictionaries like ejiro you can get working as well. I also had one of the JavaDict's working which supports skip lookups among other things (in case you don't know stroke order;p).
A 760 is expensive, but of course there are other benefits. I keep a huge number of Japanese web sites mirrored on mine and slowly read through them when I have time, for example. ^^ It also plays anime decently as well, provided you transcode down and run the screen at 320x240 instead of the usual 640x480. Biggest drawback besides price is that the screen is not very easily readable outdoors, but the high resolution is great anywhere else and the battery lets you keep it bright longer than any of my PPC's ever did.
While I find the seriousness of the question scary, what is really disturbing is that it's a repeat: http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=02/04/ 05/172221 2&mode=thread&tid=137 Seriously I would get that g/f some mental health and some nice calming drugs if mouse clicks really bother her...
Anyway, besides the various brands/cad mice and other options mentioned in the above, I've seen plenty of touchpads with quiet clicks and also my space saving keyboard with a microjoystick and mouse buttons is quiet as well. So simple solution would be to use your mouse for movement and a touchpad's buttons for clicking.
Similarly I remember back in college making my own PS/2 mouse and the circuit board was not complex at all. It would be easy to dig up the plans off the net and cut them down to a button only model allowing you to choose your own buttons. Then hot glue them onto your existing mouse if you so desire (I think I've used multiple ps/2 mice before, but worst case make your buttons ps/2 and use a usb base mouse for the motion).
Seems like a great idea to me. Of my immediate family maybe two people out of 14-15 have in depth knowledge about computers. The rest of them have almost never bought any software. Their computer runs whatever Windows version it came with and they spend 99.9% of their computer time using Office/MSIE/Outlook. If something goes really wrong they call me and most of the time it's some sort of spyware that has abused MSIE and now pops pr0n up on their screen constantly.
Now Sun is offering a complete package that replaces the Windows/Office/MSIE/Outlook and it is both cheaper and more stable/secure (being Linux based) and supported as a single unit. Good for them! I get so many calls asking for computer help from these people, I'd never spend the time to setup Linux on their systems and then support it - but I might recommend they let Sun take that job.
Agreed, but penny-arcade is much less about the money than many other sites. They recently closed Club PA which was paying extra for extra content because they didn't need the money and didn't like excluding people. Also they are choosey about banners and will often explain in their rant why they thought you might be interested in what's being advertised (showing they didn't just jump to the advertiser paying the most).
I completely agree, long ass special effects are the #1 reason I don't replay RPGs ever. The majority of them don't even let you skip the lengthy spell/summon/technique animations by hitting a button - it's grueling.
A few months back I was reading the Sunday comics and some kid had written in to their mail advice section asking how to make his MP3s all sound the same volume. What really flored me was that the advice person actually answered with some good info about normalizing MP3s.
It's great seeing what was pure geek technology before spread to the masses. So to with this article, it shows MP3s are really becoming mainstream. Hopefully more and more people will start to see how bad the DMCA/broadcast flag/etc are as well.
Why aren't all cars and trucks completely computer controlled by now anyway? It's so sad seeing such advanced technology available and I still have to freaking drive hours going to work and back every day.
The online gaming comic penny-arcade actually mentions it's choice of ads in the rant that comes along with the comic on various occasions and explains why the ad might be interesting to gamers. I've actually clicked through on ads from penny-arcade more than many other sites added together because of this.
I know animeondvd does something similar and will sometimes mention deals being given by affiliates in it's news posts - I've gone to check those out several times as well. arstechnica keeps a sticky in it's general hardware forum on the latest deals from newegg, which has gotten me a few times as well.
So maybe if you are careful about whose ads you are showing and mention why that company is interesting somewhere in your content, maybe a news post or whatever, you might not have to worry so much about ad blocking.
I completely agree and do the same. Except that I don't have Flash installed at all since I've never seen it used for anything worthwhile and ads of that form are particularly annoying.
I thought the same thing before reading the article. However, he isn't saying "tawdry" games shouldn't be made. He's saying that in addition to catering to mainstream wants for things like violence more artistic/off-the-wall/take-a-chance-on-the-concept games should be made which will ultimately benefit the industry for various reasons he outlines afterwards.
Grafting has no genetic effect on the seeds/offspring which will be descendents of whichever plant's reproductive parts produce them.
In the case of the article, for example, it's a tomato plant with tobacco roots. So the offspring will be normal tomato plants (of course the nicotine levels in the parent may hurt the seeds, but that's a different matter).
I think there's a very good chance the company that actually did the research will be able to turn out a superior product than one that stole or tried to do a quick catch up. If anything they will be forced to charge more than the Chinese since they have larger development costs to recoup and will need to make the product high quality to justify that price in the market.
>Thats cos it's a printout of black ink on grey cardboard. It's still a concept.
They would have used black on white cardboard if it was actually going to look black and white since that's a big selling point. Almost all b&w PDAs have those terrible grey/green background color screens except for the higher end ones you pay extra for.
>You might not care about that when you're playing games
Don't care about it ever myself. I've never heard a peep out of my gaming systems and have trouble believing HDs make noise. Maybe all the people who make a big deal out of this stuff are super sensitive crack addicts or something?

Personally I thought he was talking about brownies the type of girl scout. Little young for my taste...
Just have to rub it in how easy you mac'ies have it, eh? ^^

Look at that screen, it's hideous. It's tough to believe people used to accept that on a PDA...
