  1. Re:Slashdot ruined this for me on Stargate SG-1 & Atlantis Renewed · · Score: 1

It's similar to the episode where there's a series called Team Wormhole or something. In the episode one of the actors asks a question about a script that is like the episode in which Daniel's out of phase with the rest of the world but yet he doesn't fall through the floor. They give a nod to the fact that sometimes not all the facts line up but sometimes you've just got to go with it.

You have to actually read the wikipedia link to know that Duverger's "law" is not absolute. There are counterexamples and there is no reason to believe that the US couldn't be one of these.

Our system was designed so that we could vote for the man (or woman) we think is best for the job. If he's on the ballot then there's nothing wrong with voting for him. If you say that a candidate is "stealing" someone elses votes then I say they weren't his votes to begin with. A vote for a third party isn't someone elses vote to lose, it's their vote to win by convincing that voter that they're the right person for the office.

Also a third party is healthy for the process because often if a third party threatens to steal the majority vote from a larger party, the larger party will offer an alliance, making consessions to the minority voice to get their support. This annexation of smaller parties isn't the mean spirited process of dismantling their platform, but comprimise. These "sacrificed" votes are ways to let the major parties know that you're not satisfied with their current goals and that they need to accomidate you and not the other way around.

If they make their IM client as easy as user-friendly and reliable as their email client with some nifty new features it could draw a lot of people from AIM. I know I was drawn from hotmail along with my entire family and almost all of my friends. If they give enough reasons to switch, people won't complain about the hassle associated with it.

Flexability, I can name a ton, GURPS, FUDGE, FATE... do you really want a level system? Would you find it easy to play as a party of Bunnies in D20? Simplicity, again I'd go for FUDGE, though there are plenty of other examples. Playability is all in the eye of the beholder but combat in D&D seems overly cumbersome with all the feats and bonuses to calculate (How many attacks of opportunity do I get if the Orc is nearsighted with a toothache and me thief has 12 daggers of cheapness?) needless to say, almost any other system I think is more playable, but that's just me. Check out Faterpg.com if you don't believe me.

  10. Overhyped on Dungeons & Dragons Anniversary Gets Further Celebration · · Score: 1, Troll

The D&D 30th anniversary is just an overhyped way for WoTC to sell more books. IMHO the only real merit of D&D is that it set the ball rolling and brings RPG to the masses. There are a lot of better systems out there in terms of playbility or realism or flexability, plain and simple. If 'it works and it's what everyone else plays' were a good enough reason, Linux would never have made it past Linus's HD.

Thank you Mr. Independant thinker, now I know I've been a parrot all my life and I can turn my attention now to forming my own opinion.

Seriously though, "these people"? Just who are you talking about? I know plenty of well educated people who happen to be Bill O'Reilly fans, just like I know plenty of well educated people who listen to Shawn Hannity's radio show. However these people have no problems disagreeing with the hosts of their respective sources of analysis (not news thank you very much). If you listen to callers on the show, a lot are well spoken dissenters who respectfully disagree with O'Reilly's or Hannity's opinions.

Please before you make large blanket statements, have something to back them up with.
