  1. Way to win over potential customers on Infinium Labs Threatens Gaming News Site · · Score: 5, Insightful

I thought this kind of behavior was reserved for companies that could afford to lose customers or that had an existing customer base. What do they wish to gain? Slander is difficult to pin on someone especially new organizations if you're in the public eye.

An over glorified chatroom with abysmal graphics and mired in lag. Yep sounds about right for Russia. Seriously though, I didn't look very hard but I couldn't find any screen shots, for $6 a month and over these awful phone lines can it really be any good?

  5. Poor decision making on Movies Stars Seek More Control Over Videogames · · Score: 4, Interesting

Considering the poor quality of some of the appearances and likenesses in some video games, I've often wondered what makes movie stars still want to participate. If it was the money offered by the game companies, a desperate attempt to resurrect a carreer (as is undoubtedly the case with Mark Hammil in the Wing Commander role), or just trying to make a poorly executed connection with an audience they don't normally reach. If I were a movie star I'd at least want to see an alpha of the game or let my son/nephew/random kid off the street play it before throwing my weight behind it. Regardless of the situation I can only see things getting better because they certainly couldn't get much worse than a couple of years ago.

Actually, after I came to college I couldn't borrow my friends copy of the rules anymore so I substituted FUDGE for the rules and used the same basic premises. So I guess, been there, done that. Worked great.

The most intriguing part of the game for me was the encouraged use of screw your buddy notes. AKA FYB notes, these were fun because you really did get the feeling that everyone was out to get you and this prompted you to scribble off another note the to GM to perfrom a preemptive strike on your team mate because he was obviously a communist.

  11. Re:Great for career gamers but.. on On The Over-Saturation Of MMO Games · · Score: 2, Interesting

I wasn't thinking on quite the same scale as you. I was thinking more along the lines of visible rewards for good roleplaying or for sending lower level characters on quests etc.. But any sort of dynamic reward system would require more GM involvement and I think that is where the future lies for MMORPGs.

  12. Great for career gamers but.. on On The Over-Saturation Of MMO Games · · Score: 3, Insightful

I was never very attracted to MMO gaming because of my ego I guess. For the same reasons online FPSs aren't very fun to me unless it's with people I know. It's the little fish, big pond story. IMHO MMO games need to have some sort of mechanism besides keeping track of kills, experience and money that lets you know you've made a difference in the world.

A few things about Communism you might not have known: Communist parties exist in every democracy, in some places with great success. They put forth candidates like any other party. Iraq has a huge communist party that was suppressed under Sadam's regime. Communist parties are just far far far left leaning political parties who seem to be willing to comprimise their position on violent revolution. China calls itself the worlds largest democracy or something like that, despite the fact that it far from what Americans think is democratic.

Just thought I'd help clarify a few things.

  16. Fallout humor on The Bard's Tale - The RPG Curb Your Enthusiasm? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I wonder if the humor will be anything like the humor in Fallout or a little more in your face. I liked Fallout's humor becuase it was a little subdued and for the most part kind of dark. If they try to take the humor too far I fear the game may be difficult to stomach.

  18. Re:D&D is OK... on 30 Years of D&D Extravaganza · · Score: 1

Again my main sticking point with D&D is the level system, and often times when GMing I will choose a system in which there are no levels. When I say more realisitic in terms of D&D I mean I find it hard to believe that there are men out there who could take on an elephant bare handed and win, granted such characters would make for great storytelling but the Forgotten Realms setting is teeming with them and according to standard rules by killing a few smaller monsters it is easy to get to that point. This leads me to another drawback for me, which is the more you kill, the better you get at EVERYTHING your character wishes to persue. Granted a good DM/GM can mitigate these things and encourage better role playing but why not choose a system that encourages such flexability?

  19. Re:D&D is OK... on 30 Years of D&D Extravaganza · · Score: 1

You may wish to check out FUDGE. It's free to download, just google FUDGE RPG. The concept is freeform roleplaying with rules to support the roleplaying, not the other way around.

  20. Re:D&D is OK... on 30 Years of D&D Extravaganza · · Score: 1

Point made but I still feel that it is easier to grow as a GM in a less restrictive and slightly more realaistic setting. A level system just doesn't make sense to me no matter how you argue it.

  21. D&D is OK... on 30 Years of D&D Extravaganza · · Score: 0, Troll

D&D is fine to introduce players to gaming concepts but I don't understand people who play it for longer than a year or two. If a player's serious about the quality of the game they should move on to something like GURPS or FUDGE or almost anything else.

To me playing D&D is like playing monopoly where everybody wins!

DM:"OK you defeated the orc cheiftan, here's a +1 sword."
Player: "How come he has a +1 sword(read: hotel)? I want one!"
DM: "OK here's a deck of many things, use it wisely"
Player: "I drew a bad card, I think I'm dead."
DM: "We're going to need a resurrection here!"

    lather, rinse, repeat
I guess I can see some value to it, maybe it's just not for me.

I can't believe you put Champions and White Wolf games in the same category as GURPS. I'd say those two are closer to D&D than they are to GURPS in terms of realism, and I use the term loosely.
