  1. Re:Ubuntu is good but... on Shuttleworth Answers Ubuntu Linux's Critics · · Score: 2, Insightful

    on Ubuntu... it's apache2.conf.

It's been quite a while since I was an admin in a Debian shop, but I'm pretty sure that's how it is in Debian. Which makes sense, since Ubuntu is based on Debian, right? I guess I'm sayin' it's not hard to say "the standard way" and mean "the way I'm used to doing things." I prefer Fedora since I use CentOS/RedHat on all my servers, but I don't know if their way is "the standard way" or if that's just how they do things.

A good way to test your network connection is with netcat and pv. Both are packaged by all major Linux distos.

Another network speed test that is cool, although not included with a distro, is netio. It's cross-platform, with versions for Linux and for Windows in the archive. I just wish I could find a version for my MacBook (or, knew enough to get it to compile under fink).

It surprises me that more people haven't jumped over to Amazon. Maybe it's because of ignorance, I dunno... but you can get DRM-free MP3s there, encoded at 256kbit. When I use their download manager, and I have iTunes running, the song/album I downloaded automatically gets imported into iTunes.

Keep in mind that the quoted price includes a 17" LCD.

But NOT a licensed copy of Windows. Which, as has been pointed out elsewhere, doesn't matter if you like Linux or don't care about being legit...

But I don't think this is that great of a deal -- Dell has offered low-end systems for this price with an LCD.

Ya know, I love people that think that just because something happened in Utah, that the Mormons must be involved.

Have you even READ the bill? Or the article? Or previous posts? Here, I'll paste it in for ya:

"Upon request by a consumer, a service provider may not transmit material from a content provider site listed on the adult content registry."

    UPON REQUEST BY A CONSUMER.

So, lemme ask, am I trampling on someone else's constitutional rights when I block that crap using Squid so my kids can't get to it at home? According to your logic, I don't even have the RIGHT to have that content blocked if I so desire.

Sounds to me like the pr0n can still flow freely, if that's what the subscriber wants.

99% of Windows Firefox users don't see this bug.

Actually, I think that's a bit of an overstatement. I have three XP boxes and I see it on EVERY ONE of them. (You want to see this in action? Download the official 0.8 release, install it, open, minimize, and then do something that's disk-intensive. Then restore. Yeowwch!) But that's not the point. The REAL point of my post is to say that by downloading a later nightly release, installing it, and adding the boolean option "config.trim_on_minimize" with the value "false" to the about:prefs page fixed this issue just fine.

I mean, come on. We're all geeks here, right? I don't see this as a huge problem. Firefox rocks, didn't cost me a dime, and now it works flawlessly for me. They'll certainly fix this before 1.0. I think I'll keep it. :)

I'm not sure I agree with this. Sure, fine, Distro X is too hard to use, try something else... but when a user posts a question to a community mailing list, the community shouldn't shun the user just because of the way (s)he posts the question. That's certainly not going to foster growth in the Linux movement.
