Looking at the link for "dangerous software" posted above, it says the only way to get rid of GAIN is to get rid of the app it came bundled with. Nonsense.
I downloaded DivX Pro and it came bundled with GAIN. Basically this is what I did...
Just after the installer finished, I opened the Task Manager and killed the "gain_trickler" process. After that, I went to the install folder and killed the actual program. Congratulations, it's "uninstalled".
Sometimes the trickler will download a newer version of itself and will stick it in a different place (usually "C:\Program Files\Common" from what I've seen) so you may have to kill THAT process as well and then in turn delete that application.
So I guess I wouldn't be able to use my remote starter to warm my car when it's -30F and even colder wind chills, should this thing catch on all over the US?
Wal-Mart's entire inventory system is programmed using FORTRAN. I was actually shocked when I first learned that (by way of a program error, ironically), mostly because I had never used FORTRAN, therefore I didn't know all of its merits.
The same goes with my experiences. I've never had any problems with LOS with DirecTV but Cox Digital is just atrocious. Even during hurricanes Isidore and Lily (back to back, landfall one week apart to the day) back in 2002, I lost signal on my dish for maybe a total of two minutes for both days.
Cable, in my experience, has been nothing but bad. I had cable internet bundled with my digital cable and between constant service on the lines, people digging and hitting cables and car accidents where the driver hits a service pole, I just got fed up with cable and got a dish. My whole DirecTV service (including local channels, excluding premium channels (HBO, Showtime, etc)) is less than what I paid for digital cable each month.
As far as the Tivo units, I have never had any real desire to use them, so I really can't help you out with that decision.
But yeah, it seems the commercials are exaggerating the truth about LOS with satellite. Hell, if I lose signal for a grand total of maybe two minutes during two hurricanes that were one week apart, I think that's pretty damn good.
I do have boxes of carts sitting in my house. I have a banana box filled with just old NES games and another with Genesis and Atari 2600 games. Only system I still have out of a box is my SNES which I play sometimes.
I do see the point, but there's no "decent" (for lack of a better term) alternative to playing the game using the original gear it was made for.
Playing "Blackthorne" on my SNES and on a PC (emulated) are two completely different things. I just can't use my SideWinder or Gravis gamepad and get the same feel as playing with my SNES controller.
Most people who play emulated games do not have the actual game (whether it be cartidge, cabinet or disk) that they have the ROM for. If I had an arcade machine for Zaxxon, I don't see any reason to download an emulated version. Keep the coin box open and toss a quarter in when you want to play. Hell, use the same quarter over and over.
Emulators don't really make much sense to me.. the "legal licensing" of the ROMs anyway..

Look a little closer there, pal.
I don't think paint is supposed to photosynthesize...
