Of COURSE the IE folks think that MS is the underdog. MS religionists, much like fundamentalist Christians (think Jack Chick), are under the impression that their group is being persecuted, and that they are somehow 'victims'. Christians far outnumber adherents of all other religions combined in the US, and at least one Christian holiday is a Federal holidays, yet morons like Chick still seem to believe that Christians in the US are a persecuted minority. Ditto with Microsoft... despite having a tremendous monopoly, and having had said monopoly for quite a long time, Microsoft people like to think they're the underdogs. They aren't!

"Carl Johnson, the attorney representing the school board, said board members were "well within the legal guidelines" when they supported the 15-day sentence in December." (Emphasis mine)

That's the problem with lawyers. They don't give a rat's ass about what's right or wrong. They only care about what's legal or illegal. Incidentally, oral sex is still illegal in many states, and there are still a metric fuckton of outdated and/or bizarre laws like "You cannot own more than 3 sheep or more than 2 cows if you live West of the railroad tracks" or "you cannot chew gum while walking past a church on Sunday". Meanwhile, all sorts of nasty crap is legal. Crap, until recently, it was perfectly legal to shout "nigger" at a black person. (Maybe it still is? I don't know.) The point is that there is a massive gap between the realms of "what is legal" and "what is moral", and lawyers couldn't give half a rat's ass.

I love free software; I love the GPL. But let's be honest here: producing (not using or doing other things with) such software isn't a great way to make money. Just look at how many years it took Red Hat to turn a modest profit-- and those were years where it was easily the #1 Linux distribution in the US.

How will Real make money from this? If they won't, and I'm betting they won't, they will simply wither and die. Then we won't have any sort of a standard. We'll have yet another company survived by Microsoft, which won't help anyone (except, well, Microsoft)

  19. "Interestingly"? on Microsoft Eases "Shared Source" Restrictions · · Score: 5, Interesting

Try "predictably", or "obviously". Of course MS is going to go with a more BSD-like license, as opposed to a more GPL-like license. MS has always made it quite clear (through actions as well as statements) that they like the BSD-type open-source licenses, as it allows them to embrace and extend without breaching the license. (Thus far, they haven't really "embraced and extended" BSD code-- but they do use BSD's command-line FTP client code, and I believe BSD's TCP/IP stack? Or was the latter only in the past?) Anyone who thought that they would go for a more GPL-like paradigm was only fooling themselves.

Frankly, I think it's surprising that Microsoft is releasing any source code at all. I actually think it's a bit premature for MS to be doing such things. Here in the "trenches", dealing with tons of end users, all I see is Windows users to the left of me, Windows users to the right of me. I don't see Linux encroaching on Windows turf on the desktop-- and, in fact, I see Windows encroaching on Linux/Unix turf on the server side of things. (This frightens me deeply.) It is surprising that MS is scared enough of Linux and the open-source/free software movement to be releasing some of their source code while their market share is still so ridiculously high.
