I believe that these are reasonable expectations for a university. I think that any modern university should have internet access in dorms and more than likely they should have wireless as well. The new little "perks" such as getting a "free" iPod when you go to a school like Duke is not going to influence any intelligent person. You are already paying so much for school, the iPod is more than likely included in the price on top of that. If you look at the iPod as an expense to go to any school you may choose, then it wouldn't change the tuition cost over 4 years in any real way.
I would very much recommend this research site from one of my professors at the University of Kentucky. He has been doing work with cluster super computing for quite some time now and has managed to build some very impressive systems at low costs. Much lower costs than what your current grant is for. With a grant of that size using this professor's techniques you could build a whole bunch of clusters. I would suggest you taking a look at his group's research site aggregate.org.
You can also see one of the specific examples of a very low cost efficient cluster computer. KASY0
Well I do not know I can not correctly answer your question, but I do have one idea to make.
While it may seem that a lot of our freedom of speech in America has went down the drain that would not be the proper reason in this situation. The fact that you would have to know the DeCSS to recite it would imply that you would have to have a copy making it illegal already, if I am correct. So really you would have already broken the law to even know the DeCSS in the first place since you must have a copy somewhere along the line to know it. So basically you would have already broken the law meaning that the freedom of speech part is pretty much not worth mentioning.
Maybe this is mindless ramble, but I thought if I put a reply in that at least you may consider me for a gmail account which I would love to have.

I agree that this sucks for those of us who are not rich. I wouldn't mind getting in on the Google IPO 1) to possibly make some money 2) just to have some stock in Google. I think it'd be pretty cool to have at least 1 share in Google and see how they do on the market.
Sorry, but I had heard of the requirement to have a abuse@ and postmaster@, but never knew of the rfc-ignorant.com site. Whenever I went to the site I found how flawed your post actually was. There is NO requirement to use the rfc standards and there is also NO blacklist. The rfc-ignorant site only compiles a list of sites that do not comply to the RFC standard. Nobody has to have those email addresses unless they want to. NO REQUIREMENTS. Read your own linked website before you go posting bogus information.
This may be a good thing for those of us who choose to stick with our CS or Engineering majors. This may leave more jobs available to those who really desire to be involved in those fields.
Some of the awards this may be true, but the best director at the very least is deserved even for just RoTK. Peter Jackson had to conduct an army of actors, extras and stage hands. He more than likely worked his ass off from before the first day of shooting till the final cut of RoTK was ready to be shipped out. He has done an amazing job of translating an amazing book into 3 amazing movies.
They don't seem to always pick the winners well, but this year they did an excellent job. Winning 11 different awards kind of makes up for not getting any best picture/director awards for the first two.
Intel doesn't have to be as careful as you may think. The general public has no idea about Intel/AMD differences. This makes it much easier on Intel to just keep producing crap that is just couple tenths of a gigahertz faster and pass it off for a few hundred more dollars and make more profit. AMD is still not close to taking the processor lead.
Childish? I notice that you posted Anonymous Coward because you don't even want to back your comment. My user name is r0xah because I was bored and didn't know what else to put. I back my statement because I dislike what SCO has done and have followed the news since the beginning. Unlike you I probably could be affected by them somehow winning a lawsuit because I work for a university who runs many Linux based systems. Oh yeah one more point... I said this may not be the correct way to go, but yes it does make me smile once again.
This may not be the most appropriate way to attack SCO, but after all the FUD they have released and the actions they have taken it puts a smile on my face to see something like this come about. I hope their server gets toasted. Bring on the worms!
I am an intern with a university networking department so I see a wide variety of storage methods some neat some not so sightly. Just today I saw an interesting thing the head networking administrator did to "organize" some of his smaller booklets. He had popped off the plastic cover on unused 5.25" drive bays on an old computer and used these to place the bookets on like a shelf. Probably not the best use of the space, but interesting non the less.
I totally agree with you that the first version is never perfect, but then that would beg the question... why are we still using the first version or at least a fairly unchanged one at that? A patent system that allows companies to patent something and go try to make millions off of it when they aren't even producing the product is seriously flawed... patents should be so that the small entrepreneurs to the big businesses can make up an idea and make money off of it without getting smashed by the competition who can make it cheaper.
Another huge problem is the length of time it takes to get a patent. A large company has no problem with waiting an amount of time, but a person who is trying to start a business can run into major problems if it takes a year or more to get his patent through and costs a forturne to do so.
If you want to experience this kind of pain then just go out with your buddies and buy stun guns and fight each other in hand to hand combat. At least if you really suck at XBox you would have a chance to shock your friends this way. I know guys who play some of those games so much that you could never touch them.
Not only is this a pretty neat idea that would be great for the consumer, but how nice would it also be to have a EULA that was about the same length? I don't know many people who can actually read an entire Microsoft EULA without going insane. Many good books are shorter than a Mircrosoft EULA.
BTW, just in case some of you are thinking that this thing is portable because of the battery power you are right... But my idea of portable in this situation is something that you can carry around at a party untethered for hours glass after glass.
For an avid beer drinker as many/.'ers are I must congratulate the inventor/designer of this genius beer aid. The search for more ways to keep beers cold is always of great importance. Lets keep this design going and hopefully we can invent a Moore's Law for beer cooling:). haha. Well at least for a couple of years, and once we can make this thing portable... electric powered coozies for all!!!
*sniffle* *sniffle* mr. judge... google won't pick me first even after i paid other people to act like i am a good choice... can you punish them and help me get picked first again!!! *sniffle* *sniffle* -searchking
I never even thought about moving over from IE to Mozilla or any open source browsers after previously using Netscape 4 and lower versions a few years ago, but with how well done these browsers are and their customability you really can't beat them. They have something for everybody and once you install one it is as easy to use as IE and less prone to crashing. Also it does not have hidden files it saves of everything you do on the internet that it does not tell you about and you can't delete from a menu in the options.
This is really great statement to be made, but I wonder how well taken by the students it will be. A lot of the students who attend IIT attend so that they can be marketable in a big business like Microsoft. Working on OSS while a great thing is not going to bring them the same potential monitary gains as working for a big name software company. It would be great for a country the population of India to listen and follow their leaders urging, but I seriously doubt in a country where many are trying to break free of poverty that they will work for next to nothing on OSS.
Once again America is caught red handed in having one of the most screwed up justice systems in the democratic world. I would almost rather have people lose hands for stealing then have good people who are trying to protect themselves get sued or put in jail even using some loophole that an arrogant politician managed to weasel into some anti-"do anything that used to be legal" bill.
I think anytime a person or group has to fraudulantly represent themselves to do business it should not be allowed. This person is one of the many who are clogging the arteries of the internet and he should be delt with in a harsh manner.
I sure do hope these pop-ups die off, but I find that very unlikely and also if the government doesn't get involved fast there will be some major problems for users. I don't know about any of you, but I think it should be purely illegal to control the way a person's web browser works when they are trying to leave your site. That in my eyes is as bad as getting nuked in the old days when you piss a guy off in an online chat room. It is controlling what your computer can do and you can't stop it if he figures out a program that makes it to where you can't close it.
While I think you have a great idea with the OS RPG idea the thought on making the older Final Fantansy games into 3D is not so good in my opinion. Part of the nastalga of those early RPGs the fact that they are 2D and a lot of pure stradegy. I would not play the older games if they were redone in 3D.
Yes I would definitely have to agree with you on this. Since we are talking about games that has changed us or been a long strong memory in our lives, The Final Fantasy Series has been the biggest memory of a game in mine. I remember playing Final Fantasy II whenever I was in elementary school and staying up for days at a time jsut to beat it without shutting it off(even though you could save, duh). Then having to go back and play Final Fanstasy for the NES since I got into the game without ever seeing the first one. Then even today still being able to play any one of the different games with my favorites still being the 2D Super Nintendo flavor.
