How Many Windows?
·
· Score: 1
Let's see, there are currently 5 here open on my laptop. My work computer, right next to me, currently has 19, including two browsers windows with 6 tabs, 4 development environments (which is fewer then usual, and half of which are database management), then 4 folder shells, two windows for IMs (tabbed IMs help) and one for music, and one for mail of course.
The home non-server computer is usually similar, only more browsers and fewer dev environments.
Why is it that I never want to reboot my computer? Because it takes forever to get all those windows back open. Even when I was running linux and it would open most of them back up for me, it was a pain.
Going to a contest with no intention of winning can be fun. When I went to the ACM world finals it was in Shanghai. And that was fun.
I have to agree that the main difference between the US and others in that competition is how seriously they take it.
For example: each team is allowed to take 3 identical binders with 100 pages of notes and code samples. The typical russian or chinese team would take 100 pages of carefully crafted and culled programming solutions and algorithms.
My team took 100 blank pages. And even then we had to go shopping at a Chinese super-store for paper and binders about an hour before these things were due.
Of course they gave up the data. And google should have, too. All the government is asking for is the same data that google would give to any researcher at Standford if they asked for it. No IP addresses, no user names, just queries and frequencies. Heck, I've gotten several weeks worth of queries for IR research before. You know what it's useful for? Research. No way to stalk all my ex-girlfriends with it at all.
Wow. Well, you obviously don't know him.
The reason why MS lobbies for an increase of H1B? Because they have thousands of open positions. Microsoft has never had a layoff of technical personel. It's not that Bill doesn't care about tech talent. It's that he and the rest of Microsoft demand that the talent be the very best, or they won't hire them. They won't outsource to cheap labor. Two, or even ten cheap programmers will never create what one really good programmer can, and they know that.
Heck, I doubt that Bill cares very much who the sales and marketing execs are. He likely leaves that up to Ballmer. But he does care about his technical executives. And especially about college talent.
I can see how this will work:
Jabber: You are visiting goatse.cx, there are 1 other visitors.
Visitor: Don't you just love looking at this guy.
You: Wait... is that you, Mom?
I'm sure M$ is just covering their ass and giving an excuse to foreign governments not to switch to Linux.
Of course, if makes you wonder if India can be convinced to leak it. It would only take one person and one copy....
Stubbornness can only last so long, it seems. It was inevitable that the Music industry would eventually realize that the old axiom "If you can't beat them, join them", is an old axiom for a reason.
If they had thought about all of this five years ago, of course, they could have realized a lot more profit. But, I'm sure that they will throw money at it until they are competitive.
The real question is, will they be able to guilt everybody into not pirating their music...
As humans, we have an amazing ability to adapt. We find ourselves able to zone out and ignore almost anything after awhile. I'm sure that every/.er has grown acustomed to Spam as a fact of Internet Life.
It's what we trade to have freedom. Of course, the Spammers have freedom too.
Well, I must say that this is a good thing. The web, (and those who program) don't need companies that make you pay for their format. (read: Unisys sucks.)
Actually, proprietary formats don't belong in the World Wide Web. They hurt it's development, and make it more difficult for developers to offer a wide range of support.
Don't they realize that Microsoft is a "business"?
If they want them to give away their products for free, then they will have to offer them alot more that "Thanks".
The day MicroSoft gives Windows away for free is the day they give pink slips to all their employees and fingers to all their investors.

The kirkland office is really just for stealing Microsofties.

IEEE-1394. It's Firewire

I'm suddenly reminded of the stories told me by my last roommate, while he was an intern testing UPS at Underwriters Laboratories.
The ones he tested always passed, but the UPSs in the next station seemed to explode daily.
Now if only I could remember the brand name....

Does it run on OS? In sure it'll be terrible when someone calls from the Living Room...
"Honey, the remote Blue Screened again..."

I must say that this will be good for backing up my harddrive, but when else will I really have an opportunity to fill the entire thing up?
One can only use so much porn....

What's this? Another attempt to limit the power of our computers? When will they learn that our computers will do whatever we tell them to do.
