When I worked for a local accounting firm, we had about 50 Dell Latitude CPi series machines. Some of them developed problems with not powering on, random reboots, etc. Dell came out and replaced system boards on a few of these, and then Dell discovered the problem...not enough lock-tite on the screws holding the bottom case on. Comes to find out, the screws would work themselves loose and cause grounding problems with the system. After we learned about that, standard procedure was to tighten the screws whenever a user reported a problem. Almost always fixed it, but when it didn't, Dell would replace the system board the next day. I was really impressed with their business tech and onsite support.
Here in Montgomery, AL, the two cable providers are Knology and Charter. Montgomery is the state capital with a population of around 201,568 according to the 2000 census. Wetumpka (about 10 minutes north of Montg. with a population of less than 10,000) had TWC & Roadrunner for a while, but I think TW sold that contract and equipment to another company two or three years ago. Makes sense to recommend BS to these customers, becasue BS is everywhere in the southeast.
IIRC, when opening a command shell, the MS copyright notice was there too. I personally knew folks from IBM at the time, and they told me that MS code was all throughout Warp as well. Remember, this is Warp 3 I'm talking about. Don't know about 4.
This is a very good posting from an AC (you should've logged in and gotten the karma). This covers pretty much everything you probably need to know. Just remember to see if there is a bios upgrade to your machine if you buy a larger capacity hard drive. I'd hate for you to shell out the cash, install the drive at it not work. Depending upon the age of the machine, you may want to consider a used drive off eBay or one of about a gazillion other sites that sell used and/or refurbished hardware.
I don't think this would be the time to consider another OS. They need to get back up and running ASAP, and trying to get a different OS to work with existing hardware and software may take even longer than reloading everything with the existing OS. I don't know about CO., but in Alabama, the DMV uses Windows with 3270 emulation to an IBM Mainframe in downtown Montgomery, AL. Heck, when I worked for the finance department, I had access to that very datacenter, but I never could figure out OS/390 or the DB2 database they were running. Too bad, I'd love to have a drivers license that never expires (as well as car tags).
I can understand why you have the viewpoint you have, now try mine. I am perfectly comfortably with the vehicle, else I would not have bought it. You are right, there is no problem with the ABS, however I operate the vehicle in full accordance to my training, the owners manual and the laws of the state of Alabama. Otherwise, I do operate the vehicle correctly. What I am saying and you seem to be failing to understand (maybe being a rocket scientist makes someone as smart as you have trouble understanding a mere mortal like myself) is that 15 years of driving without ABS makes one think twice for a while when moving to a vechicle with ABS. Maybe this will help you understand a little...when I get in my wife's car, I sometimes grab the windshield washer handle to put the car in gear. My gear shifter is on the column, her's the floor. The location of where I think the shifter should be is a matter of habit. Does this mean I don't operate her car correctly problem or that a problem "exists between the steering column and...naugahyde bench seat?" (edited your quote for the unnecessary profanity, plus it is a cloth bucket for all you know) If you drive a stick for a while and then go to a car with an auto tranny, don't you try to push the clutch when you start the car? Does that mean your can't operate the car with the auto correctly? Same with the brakes. That doesn't mean I am uncomfortable with the vehicle or that I can't operate the car correctly. I have adapted to the ABS, it just took a little time.
Before throwing stones at others about how they drive, may I suggest that if the 2-door Saturn that is in one of galleries on your site is your car, you may want to learn to operate your vehicle correctly. Looks like that if it is your car, you rear ended someone pretty hard, which most likely was an at fault on your record. The only time I've hit someone in the rear was when I was at a dead stop and someone hit me from behind doing at least 50. Shoved me into the car in front of me. Police said I was not at fault, just along for the ride. No at faults on my record, how 'bout yours, Mr. Rocket Scientist?
I've given some thought to the weight issue as well. What do you think of maybe having a sheet of steel cut to fit the floor of the bed? I would think that would add a litle weight. Also, planning on some new tires today...that will definately help.
Fortunately, my wife is scared of the V-8, so when she has to drive the truck, she respects the vehicle as well. Like I've told her, "Don't be afraid of it, just know what it can and can't do, and respect it."
No, the problem isn't on the bench seat or with the size of the vehicle. I have driven fully loaded 15 passenger vans as part of a previous job, so I am qualified to drive what I own. There really isn't a problem except with your attitude. My point is that driving for 15 years without ABS had me accustomed to pumping the brake pedal when I had to come to a hard stop. Maybe they should make ABS a little more adaptive for people not fully accustomed to it.
Also maybe/. can write an attitude filter so that people like you can be filtered out. Too bad I can't use mod points on my own post, you would either be a troll or flamebait.
My problem with the ABS is just force of habit...my wife and I have owned 6 cars since we've been married, and this old truck is the first with ABS. Fortunately, I'm getting better about remembering I've got ABS. Unfortunately, you always have to pay attention to the rear end of a pickup truck. ABS or not, the rear end of one can get away from you very quickly, especially on a wet road or in a turn (forgot to mention in my previous post that the Dakota is an 18' long extended cab pickup). Also, don't worry about being on the road with me, I'll take my car into a ditch rather than hit someone else almost any day of the week. When I have to stop quickly, I try to aim the front end off road just in case I'm hit from behind. I've been pushed into the car in front of me once, and that was twice too many.
About my mother in law, you're right, it's just a case of being stupid while driving.
I have the opposite problem with ABS. I had to get another vehicle since my little S-10 was totalled in May. Yes, I got a gas guzzling Dakota with a V-8 (very used) since I tend to have to go to the local home stores a lot for myself and my in-laws. Anyway, this thing is the first vehicle I've owned and/or driven on a regular basis that has ABS. I've had a few near misses (or near hits) due to the fact I'm used to pumping the brakes or listening and feeling for the rear end breaking loose under high breaking condidtions.
I agree with you that driving has been dumbed down too much. My in-laws are considering a vehicle with a rear mounted camera since my mother in-law doesn't know how to use a the rear window when backing up. On rare occasion, she will use a mirror, but usually it's "throw it in gear and go." I know she's hit one of my cars twice while backing up, and I've seen her back into a tree at least once, which wasn't THAT close to the driveway. Why in the world would she look at a tv screen located in the dash when she won't even use what's there already? I would think it'd be better to look out the window, given the field of vision.
Sounds a lot like my first 286. It was an old Wyse. The motherboard was an ISA card that plugged into a backplane in the bottom of the case. Of course, the CGA graphics card and MFM drive controllers were separate cards that plugged into the backplane as well. When I asked Wyse how much for a new motherboard, it was more than what I paid for the whole computer.
Might I also suggest a "flex bit." They're $20-30 at the local hardware superstore and since they are 4-5 ft. in length, can also be used to fish the walls. Just be sure that if you are drilling through a fire break that you are perfectly vertical, else you WILL drill through the side of the wall.
I'm all for electronic (I think some call them digital) ballasts. I'm blind as a bat and have to have my refresh rate set to 72 or 75Hz, because if I don't, I'll have a migraine in about 15 minutes. I mainly do the DBA and networking thing, but I do some coding on small projects, and nothing is more distracting than a headache or migraine when a dealine is due. As far as LCDs go, I sure hope they are better than the screen on my laptop...I can barely make out the difference between light yellow and white.
Some artificial things are better than others. Real depth is something that I have had to learn (so I REALLY sucked in sports, small fast moving objects are hard to judge for me). When driving, I am constantly timing oncoming traffic with known landmarks for things like left turns. I also tend to use the reflectors on the road quite a bit as well for distance and timing purposes. However, I'm with you, none of the things you listed work for me.
I assume my eyesight is the source of my problems...I've always been blind in that eye, so I have no point of reference. Makes working in the woodshop fun (one of my few vices other than computers). I have to be very careful to wear a full plexi face shield to protect my good eye. Can't wear contacts either (tried twice, didn't work either time, and the wife said I looked funny). I can only hope that my children don't inherit the same eye problems that I have.
I'd be really interested in this if it were to make it to Imax. Due to my eyesight, the 3D glasses are useless to me...except for giving me one of the worst migraines I've ever had in my life.
To clarify my situation, I am legally blind in one eye WITH corrective lenses (20/200). The only time I've ever experienced a 3D Imax movie, I was able to see the flickering which I assume is acutally multiple projectors at different refresh rates or something similar to generate the 3D effect. Since my optic nerves didn't know how to handle that kind of image, I got a migraine that lasted for several days.
One thing everyone seems to forget is that at the time the Bible (especially OT) was written, they thought the middle east region WAS the entire world. Even as a Christian, I agree that the flooding of the entire earth as we now know it and saving all the species of animals that we know of is pretty far fetched, but it doesn't seem quite as far fetched for a local phenomenon (sp?). Also, if I understand genetics correctly, 8 individuals are not enough of a gene pool for a viable population. I believe that some parts of the Bible have to be taken with a grain of salt (ie: not absolutely literally). After all, I don't think Noah would have been able to comprehend a world much larger than what he had knowledge of, and I'm sure that dinosaurs would have been hard to comprehend as well. Just my $.02 worth.
I never really understood how they thought they could make a profit with a store. GW sold the machines at the store for the same price as the web. The only advantage I saw with a store was actually seeing the equipment before buying. We had one for several years here in my town (closed last year), and I went in there 4 times. One to check out a laptop for my wife (which she used one month and then we sold it), to drop off a laptop for repair for a client, to pick up said laptop and to see if they had a Linksys router in stock (no one else in town had one that day). The GW store was never popular hear, even with a great location.
I remember my first real intro to networking was in a little shop in a small town in Alabama. I was loading a 3.12 server from 3.5" floppies onto a 486. It took so long to load that I could take a nap between disks.
Due to the way Novell labeled one of their disks, we would ask someone to hand us the "Oh Sexy" disk.
Now, I work for state government in an all 2000/XP shop. The manager won't hear of anything that isn't Windows based! At least 2000 and higher are more stable than NT 4 ever was.
Thanks for saying what I was thinking while reading the posts. Yes, I spend time with my kids playing, going outside, family outings, etc., but sometimes I do like to sit in front of the tube for a few minutes every now and then, and sometimes the kids want to play by themselves which gives me the occasional opportunity to watch a sitcom. I'm amazed at what language (and other things) is on "family tv" these days on even the big 3 networks. It's gotten to the point where you can hardly watch a show without sex, violence or language. And usually, something like that pops up out of left field just as the kids run into the room, or a decent show is interrupted by a commercial for a game or a movie that is rated R for varying reasons.
I'm not making a moral judgement here. If you want to watch such programming at you house, that is your business and more power to you. However, we long for the days of shows like "The Cosby Show." Clean entertainment for both children and adults which usually also taught a lesson. Go ahead and mod me as troll or flamebait if you like--I've got karma to burn. While you are modding me down (or up), please keep in mind that when I have mod points that I try to keep an objective mind even on posts that I completely disagree with. If I really disaree with a post (usually morally or political), I never moderate it, because we should encourage free speech here.

I didn't realize the article was also in the original post. I was up late last night doing a database recovery. My apologies.
I know I'm probably burning Karma and that this is probably posted elsewhere, but take a look at this: http://www.davekopel.com/Terror/Fiftysix-Deceits-i n-Fahrenheit-911.htm

Not sure which type it was...but I went to the one in New Orleans in 2002 at the Aqarium if that tells you anything.

What kind of setup do you have for this? I do the a/v stuff at my church and have thought about doing this as well.
