Entirely different ideas. Redhat's approach had two major portions. First they had widget, icon, window manager themes for both KDE and GNOME that looked and behaved the same. On its own that really won't kill the native feel that much, just make them both look the same. The next thing they did was change the default config options of both desktops so that they had the same basic layouts, behavior, and application selections. That's the part that really makes them feel different. I ended up using the blue curve themes on Debian for a while since it was the best way to get a decent matching look for both toolkits at the time.

The Portland project doesn't really address the toolkit differences though and it isn't really targetted at KDE/GNOME apps, they'll be doing a lot of these same things except through APIs provided by KDE or GNOME. It's intended more for third party software developers who want to build an application that behaves sanely without having to depend on either KDE or GNOME directly. They provide a bunch of little programs that make it easier to make your program respect the current system and user configuration. so they have a program that installs a menu entry into the proper location for KDE and GNOME, another one lets you spawn the user's preferred email client, and another lets you open a file or URL in the proper program.

I have one of those Inspiron 6000s. It's a great machine that does exactly what I want it to do and was fairly inexpensive. Before I picked up the Inspiron, I was using a Powerbook that I had from work that would have been about the equivalent to the Inspiron. Both machines performed well, but the Powerbook was a bit more comfortable to use due to size and build quality. The Dell is roughly twice as thick as the Powerbook and feels signficantly heavier. It doesnt feel quite as well built either. While it doesn't feel fragile, there are parts that don't seem as sturdy as they could be. Part of that extra 1500 bucks is name, but some of it does go towards a better machine.

I'm in no hurry for a new laptop at this point, but if the Intel based MacBooks feel like the older Powerbooks I might go that route for the next laptop I buy.

  15. Re:Tivo has always been on my todo list on Can TiVo be Saved? · · Score: 1

I wouldn't recommend making the switch on the basis of the cost of the Tivo. The cost of the Tivo with lifetime service is probably the same or cheaper than setting up a nice quiet dedicated Myth box, even without factoring the time it will take to get Myth up and running satisfactorily.

I had a Tivo for about a year, and I really liked the box. It did exactly what it was supposed to do for a reasonable price, and the ads in the menus didn't annoy me too much. Setting it up took a couple hours to do, but that was mostly a matter of waiting for the tivo to download the data and do the initial import.

About two months ago I got rid of the Tivo and replaced it with a small PC running MythTV, and am happy with it as well. The main selling point for me was the ability to watch video from my desktop or laptop along with on my TV. I lost a few features like sugesstions and the more refined interface, but for me the trade offs were worth it. It took me two days to get the system basically up and running, along with a week or two of tweaking things as I noticed them. It's a great system on its own, but if you jump into it thinking it's just going to be a cheap Tivo you will be disappointed.

The sticking point of the amendment is "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Amendments 1, 9, and 10 all use "the people" in a manner that indicates that it means everyone, why would the second be any different in that respect? Article 1, Section 8 specifically gives the government power to raise and support an Army, I don't see why an amendment would need to be added to arm them.

From a historical point of view, the first 10 amendments were things that the drafters thought were implied by the Constitution itself. Each of the other amendments in the Bill of Rights relate to protecting the rights of the citizens, and were written to assure people hesitant to ratify the new Constitution that their rights wouldn't be completely trampled on by the new government.

Well in theory almost all power lies with the state. The Federal government is mostly limited to foreign policy, maintaining the defense of the nation, and regulating interactions between the different states. Of course that's just the theory that was layed out in the Constitution. The federal government has slowly expanded it's powers into other areas, which at one point ended up in a civil war as a number of states tries leaving the union. The 10th ammendment pretty clearly sums up the intentions pretty well:

The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor
prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively,
    or to the people

So if it seems redundant to you that the federal government and the state governments seem to do the exact same things now, you're in good company.
