It is really crazy that the IOT stuff is pushed so hard even though there are no security standards in place.
I do have internet connected things myself. Heating system and some home automation. While these are internet facing, they do not have access to my home network as they use a physically different network system. I assumed it would only a matter of time before someone hacked my network via my light switch to at least put up the basic security road blocks. It sounds like the IT department there wasnt thinking too hard about security.
While vertical crops could potentially produce vast amounts of food with lower environmental impact given sufficiently low energy costs, it seems a bit dangerous to have such a condensed supply chain. If something were to happen to the mega tower feeding Manhattan resulting in a lost crop, what would people do? Losing a crops happens all the time, but because there are so many farms, it doesn't really have any impact on the food supply. If you shut down all the farms and have a few towers, losing a tower to Jihadists in an airplane would have a devastating impact.
Perhaps someone here can educate me in case I am mistaken. From what I have seen from CGI videos and presentations, the hyperloop seems to be an incredibly impracticable idea. All the videos show cars driving onto some kind of platform for sled, then lowering down on an elevator and taking off down the tube? How can anyone possibly think that would work? Are there 50 lanes in the tube so lowering elevators don't block the traffic flow? Is the elevator in a side tube that connects to the main tube? Best case, a car could drive on the sled, get oriented, drop down the elevator, launch the sled and the elevator goes back up in let's say, 1 minute. Likely way more.. but let's be optimistic. They want to put this system in heavily populated areas, which means a lot of users. So, 60 cars for one elevator on a given morning would be reasonable. Though, the on-ramp to the 405 near to where I lived in SoCal supported many hundreds a day. So, if you have a line of 60 cars, the guy at the end needs to wait an hour before he can get in the tube. Then, he needs to wait likely far more than an hour inside the tube waiting for his turn at an elevator. It seems like a comically stupid idea and vastly slower than just driving on a surface road.
Unlikely. If MS offers Office for Linux then I think you would see mass migration. But, as it is, that is not going to happen.. likely ever. If anything, now that Apple is finally starting to support upgrading graphics cards increasing gaming performance, we may see folks switching platforms. Even a lot more hackintosh machines for the DIY man/woman.
Seriously, how freaking stupid can companies be to think that the "cloud" is the answer? I genuinely don't get it. Do all of these companies think that everyone has fiber to the house with 1gb/s upload speed? Do they not understand that most home connections have between 5 and 10mb upload speed and that they data caps? How the fuck should a cloud based system work under such conditions? I assume this would be a comcast wetdream. Think of the overage charges! Now that NN is dead, they can say.... oh... we see you are using a cloud system.. yeah, you need to pay extra if you want more than 1.5mb/s.
Even here in Europe, where the internet has massively cheaper than what you pay in the states, I still have only a 400mb DL and 20mb UL. Faster isnt even available where I live. It feels like am waiting forever to put a large file on my onedrive. I usually never use because it is so slow. If the file is like 7 or 8 GB, I would use my works wesendit account and just email myself the DL link to DL from my offsite machine. That is WAY faster than onedrive.
Seems a bit more practical to build some desalinization plants. From what I have understood, recent advancements in membrane tech would make it far cheaper than in the past. Plus, there is the added benefit of lithium production.
I'm not sure there's any significance to 1.8 GHz being numerically close to 2.45 GHz (is it even considered close at 30% difference?)
I would expect a far greater power density using FDD20, which has a down-link (from the tower) and uplink (from the phone) that both have a harmonic around 2.45 GHz. Of course, this is known already, which is why the power density limit for FCC and Canada gets lower as the frequency is reduced. Anything over 2GHz in the US just goes to 1mW/cm2, but it is way more strict for Canada.
While LTE does have a lower peak power, it doesn't enjoy the far lower duty cycle of GSM. So, you have to calculate at 100% rather than the -3, -6 or 9 dB of GSM, depending on the number of slots being used. But yeah, the link to cancer is pretty clear and actually common sense. It's a big ass transmitter... of course it wont be good for you. As long as you don't have that shit attached to your house, you should be fine though given the air losses involved. Though, in the US they are using more and more lower bands, which have way less attenuation.
but I trust the Chinese government a whole lot less.
Why? What is your opinion based on? You don't live in China. Do you think the Chinese government really cares what you are doing? Consider, in China, the Government controls just about everything, but, they don't pretend otherwise. The people in China know they are watching and they also know that unless you are plotting against the Government or doing illegal stuff that they don't really give a shit. In the US, they do the same exact stuff, but just lie about it and tell everyone they are not doing that, all the while they are condemning China for doing it. The US government is just as shitty as China's, but at least in China, they don't try and pretend they are not fucking you.
I still use my trusty 6P and it's still doing everything I need it to do. It has Android 8.1, though I guess that is the last OS update. Still, way better than what Samsung gave me, which is why I no longer buy their phones.
What is amazing is the fact that Huawei controls the vast amount of the cellulars infrastructure around the world. For one type of certification, a phone needs to do field trial certifications on 5 different network configurations. It's getting harder and hard to find 5 configs that are not Huawei. But somehow, the CIA is worried about your cellphone? Like the average American is walking around with classified information on their phones? Like China somehow gives a single fuck what you are taking pictures of or talking to your mates about? This is clearly the opening steps in the coming global trade war. The problem is, I don't think it's going to happen the way American policy makers think it will. American politicians seem to believe that we are living in the 1980's and the rest of the world will just, "Step in line" with the US. That's not going happen. More and more European companies are aligning their businesses towards China. Not because they think Americans are crazy (which they do) but because of market penetration and saturation. It used to be that if you invested in the US, you could at least count on stable policy. Now, who the fuck knows what you guys are going to do from one month to the next. China is way more stable. The fact is, there are truck loads of money to be made in China. In the US, it is way harder to be profitable. Companies see this of course. So..who do they chose to piss off? The bully who lets you barely brake even or the new guy flush with cash?
If you going to bother being a racist, at least post with your ID. You fucking coward. Typical racist though. Will only say something when they are sure no one can figure out it was them. What a little bitch.
I live in Germany and I love killing Nazis. Not every day, but often. Of course, I need to use a VPN service to play these games, as Nazi symbolism and likeness is illegal here for.. reasons.
There are still really Nazis here and amazingly, it has never occurred to me to go on a real life killing spree.
Seriously, Intel needs to get out of the mobile chipset game because they are pretty shit at it. I have been in the mobile certification business for a long time. We do 10's of thousands of tests on protocol stack and hardware layers of modules integrating these chipsets. Intel based products are always a pain. Their support is crap too. Most say, ok.. never again with Intel. We will use Marvell or something. QC tends to be 4 or 5 times the price, so it often doesnt make sense for high volume, low cost stuff.
Anyhow.... they started way too late in this game and missed the boat.
Looking at what is available today, I would have to say that today's smart world is incredibly stupid. Not to mention fractured with loads of standards, apps and do-dads. When Google took over Nest I had high hopes. I had imagined they would do something clever like install their phased array mics into the "smart" fire alarms that could be in almost every room. Then from anywhere you could ask google something. But no... you need to find some stupid crappy little speaker and keep shouting HEY, GOOGLE, HEY GOOGLE, HEY GOOGLE, until it finally can hear you. With these chips, they could take that idea even further. Install connect appliances, connected switches and sockets and then figure out the patterns of usage and voices to "learn your ways" and begin to antisipate thing. Oh.. Bob always turns on the TV right after he grabs a beer from the fridge around 6pm. The fridge just opened, so I will turn on the TV for him.. also it was cold today, so i will adjust the heat in that room so Bob's ass doesnt get to cold on his leather lazy-boy. I should think that is all totally possible today.
Bullshit! I live in the ruhrgebiet, which has the highest population density of not only Germany, but in western Europe. Believe it or not, most people around here do not work in Düsseldorf or even Köln. They work in places like Ratingen, or Essen or even Duisburg. Personally, I happen to live a mere 16 KM from my office. Very short by standard of this area of Germany. Now, normally I leave for work at about 6:30 and it takes me about 25 min to get to work. On the way home, at 16:30 it normally runs about 35 min. If I leave at 5, it takes about 1 hour or more. How long does it take with the train? Hard to say, since there is no train. There are hardly any trains around here. What about the bus you ask? I tried that once. 2.5 hours. No fucking thanks. My eBike? About 50 minute, no matter that time I leave. In the summer I only take my ebike. I would love to take a train or a bus, but it is literally impossible to use public transport to get to and from work where I live. So... I drive. There has never been a situation where I could not park either.
I could not care less if the bus was free. It's like giving out free chocolate covered shit bars. Sure, they are free, but it's still a shit bar.
When I was growing up, kids were just as shitty as they are now. Bullies were just as prevalent. Of course, kids who got bullied only had to deal with it while at school. With social media, these asshole kids are able to stock their targets whenever they want. So nowadays the kids who get bullied don't get an escape from the mental bullying. Of course I know a lot of people no this site do not believe that mental suffering is a real thing and people should just shut up and stop being snowflakes. Naturally, the people who think this way grew up in their middle class white suburbs without a single obstacle in their live. While I was fortunate enough that I never had to deal with that stuff as a kid, I know a number of people who did. 25 years on, these people are... different than other people today. I could easily see how social media could drive a person to depression. Constant pressure, constant negative imagery and the kid feels there is not escape. Remember... Kids can be super assholes.
Yeah, I get the reasoning. I understand on an intellectual level that depression is a sickness and in fact it is actually addictive to the person due to the chemicals produced by your body.
It is just hard, personally, to imagine that I could be in a situation where I would think that death was the favorable outcome. Maybe if I was terminally ill and could only look forward to extreme pain, but even then I doubt my mind would accept there as no hope of somehow pulling through.
I would be curious to know if there is any correlation between an increase in population density and the number of suicides. Also interesting would be suicide rates pre and post social media days. Thinking about it a knew / know a surprising number of people who have taken that road or attempted to take that road. Most "seemed" normal enough.
It is hard to imagine how people get to the state of overriding their self-preservation instincts.
I would disagree with you inclusion of Germany. In fact, we hate you smug cycling mother fuckers. There are perfectly serviceable cycling lanes, but no... you fucking assholes need to ride your bike right, smack dab in the middle of the car lane. Not even off the side, but right in the middle. Forcing traffic into oncoming cars and putting everyone in danger because of these selfish m-f'ers who think they have the same rights as a car.
In most places, roads are mainly paid for from petrol taxes. If you are not using petrol, then you are driving on our roads without contributing to their upkeep. This means you should not have the same rights as a car.
At least in the US they "mainly" stick to the bike lanes. Fuck.. I hate cyclist in Germany.
Seriously, it seems like everything we see and do, eat and drink or come into contact is both linked to causing and preventing cancer. Heck, every other week they say that any amount of red wine causes cancer, then the following week, "a glass a day keeps the cancer away". It is likely they have no fucking idea what causes or prevents cancer.
On a side note... those gut critters are super important. Many years ago during my military service, I had gotten a pretty strong bug while in the middle east. To remedy this, the military doc gave me very powerful antibiotics. It did kill the bug, but it also destroyed my digestive system. Also these years later there are many foods, including all dairy products which I am no longer able to eat. Military docs are the best!
