Actually, the advent of image compression can be tracked to porn. When UC Berkeley was testing out image compression algorithms back in the 70's, they used an image, that is forever known simply as "Lena". This image was a composite of high texture areas (a plant in the background with lots of branches and leaves) and smooth transitional areas (skin). The "lena" image was a digital scan of the November 1972 issue of Playboy featuring a model named Lena, I can't remember her last name and I don't want to search for at on my work computer.

In anycase, you can thank JPEG compression (discreate cosine transform) to porn

Actually no. PAL is pretty different from NTSC, PAL used 50Hz and NTSC is on 60HZ (interlaced). This has to do with the electrical system used in Europe vs. NA. Also PAL and SECAM uses different scanning velocities than NTSC, mainly due to the fact that PAL has more lines. Another major difference is PAL and NTSC signal bandwidth, IRC from my digital video compression course. PAL has an 8MHz per channel bandwidth, and NTSC only has 6Mhz.

Are all reviews public? I mean, at my university, the professor has the option of not submitting the reviews, although it is a all or none policy. But speaking as a student, I find reviews of this sort are extremely helpful, it might not make a student NOT take the course if a prof has gotten a bad review, but it gives us a good idea of what to expect. Whenever I take a course, I try to ask around for others who have had the prof before. On another note, some profs try to make it easier for the students than others.

Sorry, maybe it's cuz I'm an engineer/geek, as most /.er are, but I found it extremely simplistic. I watched it when it first aired on PBS, after watching the whole thing in one sitting, I just felt, I wasted my time. There wasn't anything in there that I didn't know, and no I didn't read the books either. But for the first 3/4 of the bloody thing, he would keep on saying: "Strands of vibrating energy we call Strings", over and over and over again. The only thing that I found remotely interesting was when he talked about how the other theories were unified. That being, electriomagnetism and the weak/strong nuclear force, via quantum theory. The last bit when he did actually talk about String theory, he didn't even get into enough detail for me to learn anything meaningful out of it at all. I am pretty disappointed, this coming from a long time Nova watcher.
