  1. The Republicans have passed laws against public housing, like the Faircloth Amendment, and in cities around the country, like New Orleans, they've actively destroyed public housing. (Although the Democrats have done their share.)

Speaking as a New Orleans resident...I have to say THANK YOU for tearing down and getting rid of as much of the old Projects as they did!!

Those were/are the central zones for all of the crime (most murders happen there) in the city by far.

The problem is...they didn't go far enough and raze ALL of those fucking cockroach infested blights on the city.

They ones they did tear down and replace with mixed income housing....those parts of the city are largely seeing regrowth and drops in crime.

One of the problems we have with so much crime in the French Quarter, is that one of the last projects is just a few blocks from it....I keep hearing there are plans to destroy that and replace it too, but they have to keep that largely quiet, or the folks that think the low end, dirty, broken projects system of the past is something to cherish will scream bloody murder.

Those projects where a large part of the central problems with the city...gangs and crime, that's all they are good for.

NOLA has a strange layout...in that there is no good side of town and bad side of town, like in most cities. This is largely due to the way the projects came to be here.

Yes, they were originally built as govt housing for soldiers coming back from WW2....but over the years, they turned into "the projects" with only the poorest of poor crowded in there in a manner far to dense for the situation to handle.

Blow them all away, I say...so that the city can continue to see a drop in crime, to continue to see an influx of young professional 30+yr types moving in with families, etc...like we saw after Katrina.

Keeping and bearing arms is a right. They aren't "for" any one purpose. You don't need a reason. That's what a right is.

So is (or should be) privacy....

Remember, the US Constitution does not "grant" rights....its purpose is to enumerate the supposedly LIMITED powers and responsibilities of the Federal Govt.

The bill of rights is an odd duck...in that it does actually list some rights...there was a lot of argument on that at the time, as that the founding fathers didn't want there to be the misconception that it granted rights.

But I would argue that privacy, is a right, not for any one purpose and that for privacy, you also "don't need a reason"....

It wasn't that many years ago...we went to concerts with *GASP* No cell phones at all!! No one owned them.

    We all survived just fine.

I'm gonna throw you a REAL curve ball here..but a LOT of us around that are maybe middle aged, grew up and children with no such thing as a cell phone, no helicopter parents....nothing around but land lines in each home. And yet, somehow we managed to survive.

I applaud anyone who can pull themselves out of poverty by their bootstraps like that, but I don't think you have a general solution.

Hey, no one said it would be easy or convenient now, did they?

If you didn't pay attention in school..if you thought being a thug, gangbanger or general worthless type was the important thing to do, while ignoring your studies and working heard for an education early on when it was free, you were young and had time....well, you just gotta now work that extra hard and walks that extra mile to play "catch up" with the rest of the world that passed you by back then.

The world doesn't own you a damned thing...so, you gotta work, know your priorities and have some common sense. Don't have fucking kids if you can't afford them. Take advantage of school while you can, etc.

Otherwise, it gets harder later in life. It can be done, but you gotta pay the piper with sweat and sacrifice at some point if you want to succeed, and quit being a leech on society.

And exactly where are all of the swarms of illegal immigrants working these days? They seem to be finding PLENTY of jobs that don't require an education.

Maybe if we didn't have them driving down wages, we'd have more of the poor US citizens working...no?

All I can say is...I don't see much representation of any other ethnicity or race waiting early in the morning outside Home Depot waiting to be picked up for work besides the mexicans.

Business people insert themselves into the process and try to meter and measure everything. Ostensibly this is to facilitate a distribution network, because those darn expensive vaccum tubes in the recording studio don't make themselves, ya know.

I think a lot of what you said is true AND contributes to the reason that today there is such a dearth of good music to listen to, and keep and cherish and remember for more than a day or two...

It started with musicians and bands lifting from other artists of the past, and using it to build and move forward on.

You had Rock and Roll come from country and blues....Chuck Berry lifted his guitar sound and licks from his piano player (hence the strange reason so many of Chuck's songs are in piano keys)....groups like the Stones took Chucks work and with the older Delta bluesmen, and packaged it into something new. Zeppelin, took from the old blues guys and gave us heavy blues rock.

This patten continued and you got an evolution of music, until something about the yearly 90's I'd say....and this evoluton music, for whatever reason....stopped.

Something just changed...I know there are lots of factors, like the splintering of f few genres into hundreds of them. I think rap had something to do with it personally (you may like it, but I consider the words "rap" and "music" to be mutually exclusive terms, but that's just my opinion)....where you went from people actually singing and playing their own instruments...to just shouting, and sampling other musicians' music ...nothing really as original really as from in the past when they nicked or lifted licks from other musicians of the past.

It just isn't the same....and I think that loss of continuity just left future artists kind of lost. They don't have solid roots any more.

I do seem some trying t change that...reaching back to where the gap started and trying to grap a little of that and make it their own, but there is a long road to go before we ever see the type of music and musicians that are going to be able to put out music for the ages, that people will be listening to for the next 20-50 years after release.

I mean...I can still hear Beatles songs today, and anticipate I will far into the future (like we hear Mozart). Will anyone even know a Katy Perry song in 10 years from now? Will they know who Katy Perry was?

  16. Uber, as it turns out, really makes a lot of money selling data. In fact, this is what the real issue with Austin regulations was all about - Austin demanded free access to Uber ride data (the details). It's too much of a revenue generator for them to give away. Houston was anxious for the data, New York, too, and they both paid for the data from Uber. But when Austin decided they weren't going to pay for it, Uber decided to leave town.

Data is that important to Uber. They will crush Urbanhail with their lawyers.

Well, make sense...why would a company that has a product "X" that is part of their money making plan and revenue stream, want to give that away?

What is these same cities, take a look at Porsche, and decided they'd like to have access to Porsche's flagship car, the 911....NY and Houston pays them for those cars...but, Austin says "Nope, in order to have your business here, you have to GIVE us 911s for free".

Data is a tangible thing...just like a physical car is, they are both work money and part of a company business plan and revenue stream.

I can also fit a LOT of open windows on a 5K monitor which is nice too....

But there are applications for a 4K or 5K computer monitor.

I had thought recently to get one of the iMac 5K's....but was worried that the GPU on it would be so busy with the display that it might now have quite enough power to run Davinci Resolve as speeds I wanted and needed for editing and color grading video.

With a monitor like this with GPU internal, I might could get that, and a new CPU unit (macbook pro, mac pro, etc)...and let the GPU in the computer unit do all the hard work for the application and the GPU in the monitor would do the display work....that sounds pretty sweet!
