Alternatively, I could say that if the only interesting thing in your life is that you eat different foods every day, you are living in a superficial bubble.
Well, I have some routine forced upon me, due to having to work for a living.
But outside of that, I do try to do something new and different as often as I can. I do think of food and cooking as HUGE part of my life, that I enjoy, so culinary speaking, I am always looking for new things to eat and cook.
But, I constantly look for new things to do, new fun projects, etc.
Anything that can make my life more interesting and varied, I'm pretty much game for....
At 55, I know what I like and how much I like it. Experimentation becomes less important than experience.
Thanks for the answer, interesting.
I find that I'm setting in my ways, somewhat in spite of myself.
As I'm aging, however, I'm actively trying to keep myself from doing that, and actively seeking out new experiences and new things best I can....hoping it keeps my mind younger and, hopefully, keeping from getting too close minded, and not to be yelling to 'get off my lawn' too often or too loudly.
:)
I guess we'll see how I do as the years go by...have a good one!!
I've often wondered about the programmers who write these software packages.
The stereotype programmer is young, bright, scientific, idealistic, and concerned for global issues.
And yet, big companies have no problem staffing teams to write the software for predator drones, Carnivore [wikipedia.org], Total Information Awareness [wikipedia.org], and other packages which are used to violate human rights.
Where do these "programmers of dubious character" come from?
Well, two different concepts there.
One might have a moral compass, or thoughts on how things should be, but we are talking about people wanting to make good $$$, and that changes everything.
Most people work a job ONLY to earn money. So, you do what it takes to earn money.
I'd dare say most people find clubbing baby seals to death to be distasteful, but you'd find far fewer people that would turn down a job that make $250K/yr that had to do with somehow aiding that industry.
Personally, while I'm against such tools as RIOT, etc....I'd not have a problem at all if they paid me enough money to do it.
I doubt I'm in the minority on this....when it comes down to it, all a job is for, is money, and has nothing to do with your thoughts or outlook on life. You do what you have to do to make the most money that you can.
I pretty much do the same things every day at more or less the same time. I have Sunday dinner at the same restaurant and order the same thing. Give her a calendar an time of day and she could predict my movements precisely.
Just curious..why are you living your whole life stuck in such a rut?
That would be so boring to me...I rarely eat the same thing within a 3-4 week period.
Do you not crave some variety?
Not putting you down...but just curious. I'm not familiar with someone that would go to one restaurant, same day, every week ordering same dish..year in and year out....?
nyway, if they're interested in finding terrorists and whatnot, they should probably look elsewhere. If they're interested in picking up stuff to use against their own citizens (Stasi-style), then they're probably on the right track.
I see your latter point as a valid concern.
Hell, it seems these days, all you need are to claim something is to combat child pr0n or terrorism, and voila, you've now acquired the keys to the Constitution and can squash any old rights you used to have. Having more info on the citizenry is a nice tool to a possibly nasty end.
1. Track politicians. Get a sense of who, over time, is authoring, signing on, voting for, or otherwise supporting these bills. Companies develop advanced analytics by tracking consumer behavior, let's do the same by tracking politician behavior.
Is there any easily, public accessible govt system that provides bills, and the names of the politicians authoring them? Same or different system showing those that voted for/against said bills?
That would be the best place to start data mining this stuff.....
Maybe it's my age showing, but the number of times I feel like I want to watch a video on the internet is vanishingly small. As in, I have no idea the last time I cared enough to watch a video on the internet. Same for games.
With me, and my age is getting up there too....I feel I'm watching more and MORE video on the web, but to learn things!!
I'm trying to learn a lot of video and image editing software and tons of stuff out there from tutorials, to special tricks, differences in versions, etc.
And if you're into DIY, well, again, youtube and the like are the first places I look for before I even search for text or blogs on things these days.
I've not been into games in a couple of decades, but for any new project, software or activity I'm interested in, I look first to online videos to get me going.
Hey, I'm a guy...shoot me for enjoying looking at decent looking women.
That being said...I tend to try to watch most all of the major US news....networks news, Fox, even MSNBC...sometimes for fun I put Fox and MSNBC on the two channel switch thing...and go back and forth to see what they're saying.
I figure by watching all of them, and reading, I can form my own clearer pic of what's going on out there.
I lean heavily conservative fiscally, somewhat libertarian with regards to govt intervention in daily US citizen life, and slightly liberal on social issues (which cares what 2 people do in the dark, just don't make my pay taxes for it).
But I'd definitely be happier, if the other news channels would get some better looking babes on there to compete with the news chicks on Fox. Shoot me...I'm a guy.
Rudeness? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Good for them if they're comfortable with their sexuality, but "gimp" is derogatory slang for a disabled person. These people need to grow up if they want to be taken seriously. Might as well have named it Cripple.
Funny, I'd never heard of the word gimp in that light...maybe it is a regional slang term?
I have that, well parallels instead of vmware, but same difference.
Honestly, it is not the best of both worlds, its steaming pile of crap. The Windows 7 VM runs ok, as does linux, not awesome just ok.
Meanwhile the laptop heats up and the fans come on the battery drains while you watch just having a VM open idling, never mind really doing anything in it.
I don't find I have that problem on my macbook pro.
What did you buy hardware wise?
I got the late 2011 mondel 15" mbp, I maxed it out for screen, i7 processor, top gpu available, and I upgrade the ram to 16GB myself.
It barely even hums most of the time when I'm running things.
About the only time the fans have to kick on, is when I'm rendering video with Davinci Resolve.
I mean, if you ARE going to run VMs, you do need to make sure you have the hardware to do it properly otherwise of course, you'll not be happy.
I've never run into anyone that bought one for style I guess.
Mine very rarely leaves the house frankly. I bought it primarily to develop stills and edit and color grade videos. I like the mac due to it coming out of the box with tools I can use (iMovie, iPhoto, Garage band).
Once I get used to using those, for only $80 I was able to get Aperture 3, a VERY nice tool for editing my photographs (I have a Canon 5D3, so I want to put out the best images and video I can)....and for only $300 I was able to get Final Cut Pro X...another high end tool.
Everyone says they are so $$$...but when I see what software comes with them, and then how cheap it is to upgrade these...well, let's put it this way, the alternative is pretty much the Adobe CS6 suite and regular price is just under $3K.
For what I wanted, I think I got a bargain.....i7 processor, I got the least amount of ram, and upgraded myself to 16GB....acts as a great little workstation, and with VMWare, when I need to do something windows centric, or even with distros of Linux I like...I can run those too...
And when I do need to travel, it goes with me, but usually in a case so really...who's going to see it?
However, on a more serious note...you could get a nice macbook pro....and install VMWare on it...and get a OEM copy of Win 7 (I still seem them on newegg for a decent price)...and run it in a VM.
This combo allows you to have the best of all worlds on one computer...OSX, Windows (your fav. flavor) and Linux...etc.
I remember trying to get GIMP onto the school computers where i worked years ago to replace a bloated expensive equivalent, the name stopped it happening (in the uk)
Do you bring the TV too? Or do you just trust that you'll be staying in a hotel that 1. allows guests to connect their own video sources without paying an extra fee,
Allows?!?!
Not sure what you mean...I just usually go to the room, pull the tv out a bit of the cabinet, and hook in whatever I wish. Most tvs in there now have HDMI inputs so just plug whatever you want into them.
Easy Peasy.
Not sure where you stay at where you have to 'ask permission' to hook something to your hotel room television. Hell, was easy to do even back in the old CRT television days.
Still, I'm not understanding why the official got axed.
I mean, a 57 year old man getting it on with a sweet, young 18 year old chick is NOT character assassination, hell, I would thing the rest of the party leads would be high fiving him!!!
:)
You know...the old "pictures or it didn't happen" meme.
Downsizing unneeded govt jobs IS a good thing, since it is a leeching job paid for by our taxes.
YOu need private jobs, and these people can go to THOSE...and earn money and not be a drain on the system.
So, yes....govt jobs do not help the economy like private jobs do, in many aspects. Sucking tax money sucks the life out of private jobs....free up tax monies and let the jobs come back into the private sector and everyone will benefit. A govt job for the sake of the job and not what it can provide is waste.
Well, I have some routine forced upon me, due to having to work for a living.

Why?
It isn't all that hard to set up a nice secure little Postfix server and put a few rules in place to manage mail with your users.
Thanks for the answer, interesting.

Lemme guess, 2nd or 3rd ingredient listed on the label is gonna be HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup)??
Ah...nothing like a little boost to the old obesity rate.
Well, two different concepts there.

But as far as the 'support' people...no, the majority are NOT English speakers, even if they do claim their name is "Kevin".

Gotta give them props for that!!!
Candy Crowley....well, she sure does have the face and body for a great radio personality.
Funny, I'd never heard of the word gimp in that light...maybe it is a regional slang term?
I guess my thing was...I'd never heard of the word 'gimp' having any negative connotations....
What is shebang have to do with something bad?
I've heard the expression "the whole shebang.." for all my life and never thought anything was wrong with that...??
I don't find I have that problem on my macbook pro.

No windows 8 there.

That's actually the route I went.
Hmm...new one on me, but then I guess I've not known anyone that was into sex bondage.
Yet Another Reason Not To Do FaceBook.
