I was also going to ask about AC and regular Central heat, but then I did think that some people have them controllable and accessible through apps.

Frankly, I'd not want to have any of my utilities type things connected in the house, I see no benefit from it, but I can see many negatives.

I just want something that functions a LONG time, and works independently of other things in my home.

I don't need to connect my fridge, or dishwasher or toaster...hell, I wouldn't let the Power or Gas company install a network able connection to my meters....

The internet and being connected has its place, but running my home, is not one of them.

  4. Re:Just label it and move on on Will the Food Industry Botch the Introduction Of Gene-Edited Foods? (sfgate.com) · · Score: 1

There is a very good argument as to why the labeling should not be required; the first is simply space. There are all sorts of things various interest groups might want on a label (was this picked by union labor, was it picked by an employer that uses e-Verify, what county was it from, what is the distance from the farm to processing center, and so on); if you allowed every group to force its requirements onto the label, you might simply run out of room.

We're not looking to let special interest groups run amuck with label needs. This is just an addition to the ingredients list.

he second is First Amendment related. Labeling requirements are a form of compelled speech, which the courts generally frown upon unless given a good reason. Since no one has yet to show any actual harm from eating GMO foods, that puts a the burden of proof as to why it needs to be on the label on those desiring the labeling.

Well, the ingredients and nutrition labels on food are already mandated, and the listing of GMO.Gene edited, is just an addition to that....since those really are "additions" to the food that wouldn't naturally come there. I mean, you don't label a banana, since it naturally comes that way picked off the tree. But you splice a gene in there or mix with other ingredients and you need an ingredients and nutrition label.

This isn't a new mandated label really, it is just a call for a slight upgrade that the already mandated label have a new category added.

What do you have against people being informed so they can make their own choices?

Do you dislike freedom of choice based on information?

I do, especially when it comes to what I ingest into my body.

  5. The only consumer goods with mandatory labels are those with demonstrated and legally proven side effects hurting users.

Hmm..interesting, I never knew this can of pork and beans I'm looking at, with its mandatory ingredients label had "demonstrated and legally proven side effects hurting users"....or, were you thinking of possible fart dangers after eating?

Hey, how about they just make them LABEL these new and exciting foods for being gene-edited, and let the consumer decide?

    Sounds fair to me, no?

I mean, we label already for ingredients, % of carbs, sodium, etc....and I think some states even mandate restaurants label foods on the menu....

So, why not do this here too...for GMO and gene-edited and give the consumer the info they need to make their own health choices?

  7. Not everyone they represent is a paying member.

But it doesn't negate that they are a lobby group made up of and FOR the rights of all gun owners.

  8. Yeah, but you know who's not with us? The NRA.

You act like the NRA is some sort of boogy man out there operating against the will of the US public.

The NRA is made up of and funded BY a great many of the US public, the ones that appreciate the 2nd amendment and enjoy safe, legal firearms ownership and use.

The NRA is their lobbying committee, amongst other growing gun's right organizations.

The NRA is simply representing that massive number of legal and responsible gun owners out there IN the US.

  9. An 80 percent arm (which is a stripped and when delivered an un-usable firearm lower) requires technical know-how and an investment in tools, skills and technologies well beyond the reach/price of a fully-usable lower that you could purchase with a 3-5 day waiting period for (same as a fully functional gun).

Wow..where do you live where you have a 3-5 day waiting period to buy a lower or fully functioning firearm?

I walk in the store, show ID, fill out paperwork, they do the instant check on me and in about 15-30 min I'm walking out the door with my shiny new gun.

Milling out an 80% metal lower, isn't rocket surgery.

They send it to you by mail if you want, with jigs and instructions on how to do it.

Lots of videos out there, but you can mill it out using their jigs and power tools most people have laying around the house.

From there (and in the US, say for an AR, the lower is the ONLY piece of a gun that is considered a firearm by the ATF)...you easily buy the upper (fully put together for maybe $300 or so), and a lower parts kit, can be had for about $60 or so....slap it together and you have a fully functioning, unregistered, unserialized AR....perfectly legal and has been for MANY years.

The only things with 3D printing is they're getting to where you can 3D print a lower out of plastic that will hold up for longer periods of time, especially because the lower isn't really catching much of the stress of the gun firing.

  10. The murder rate in New Hampshire is 1/10th that of Louisiana. Go compare the gun laws in both those states. Here's a hint, one state requires a permit to carry a concealed handgun, and the other does not.

    That is absolutely FALSE.

You have to have a carry concealed license in the state of Louisiana to legally carry a concealed firearm.

The thugs committing most of the gun crimes in LA, are in the gangs, mostly in the project areas or immediately surrounding areas, at least here in New Orleans.

And those low lifes aren't going to bother following any new gun laws that seem to only affect the many law abiding citizens that enjoy guns.

  12. I see no need for an expensive watch that runs at best a few days between charges. I already have a phone that's like that.

Honestly, I was once on your train of thought....

But, last year, I had a good bit of disposable cash, and got an apple watch, just as a toy.

I'd not had a watch in a long time, and I'd actually wanted an old fashioned Mickey one, which I couldn't find that looked like the old style with the hands pointing at time, etc.....and the apple watch had that face with the tapping foot, etc.

Anyway, I've become HOOKED on the smartwatch thing. I use it ALL the time for more than a watch.

I use it regularly as my timer for cooking.

I use it at the gym to track my workouts, and also when running/walking/outdoor bicycling to track my path and progress.

It works great doing laps in the pool...I also use it to track my sleep (the app for this is so-so, hoping for a better one to come out).

It is now my main reminder for calendar events, I see my text messages on it,and often answer without having to dig my phone out of my pocket.

I got the one with cell phone coverage in it and I like it when out biking as an emergency phone, as that I can just wear it and leave my bulky phone at home.

I also pair it with BT ear buds for workouts and again, music without having to carry the bulky phone.

I have actually been amazed how much I use the thing and for me at least...it is money well spent!!
