The success stories for Kickstarter are inspiring, but the potential for ripoffs is enormous. You need to know just what it is you're buying into. The amount of money that can be lost to fraud is comparatively small, but it's still as much as $10,000, and a lot of people can't afford to lose that. Especially the ones most likely to make desperate, ill-informed choices when somebody promises them enormous returns.

So, we should force everyone be limited in what they want to do with their money based on the lowest common denominator of intelligence, wealth or aversion to risk?

Since when did it become the governments mandate to protect people from themselves? Where exactly is this in the constitution?

There are already laws on the books against fraud....and they should be prosecuted, but there's not reason to limit people with the means and ability to research and make critical decisions as to what they can do with their money.

We're becoming over regulated in most all aspects of our lives by the laws trying to protect people from themselves...some people are going to lose in life and fuck up......we should let them rather than limit people on what they want to do that can do the right thing and live with the repercussions of their actions.

People that can't afford to lose $5 can easily buy their paycheck worth of lottery tickets or go to a casino....there are always going to be poor and stupid people, a sucker born every minute, but we shouldn't limit those that have wealth and capabilities to live and take risks within their means because a few idiots out there might lose their shirts.

Yeah it's sad when uneducated persons make unwise investments, and then lose everything. I knew a guy who thought he'd won the lottery, and stupidly mailed-off the money.

First, I'm not making light whatsoever to the tragic events that your friend experienced.

However, I must comment, that I don't believe it the the government's constitutional mandate to protect any individual from their own ignorance or stupidity, or just bad decisions.

I fear too much regulation over what a person does, is basically forcing everyone to adhere to rules to protect the lowest common denominator....

I want more freedom to take fiscal risks like investment in very small businesses....I'm smart enough to read up, research...and even with that, I'm ready to fail and lose money.

That's the risk you take, but you can make money and help startups with really good ideas get going that might not otherwise attract the interests of VC's that have the millions of dollars and lawyers on reserve.

Sure, basic laws against fraud should be in place, but I should be free in this country to make most decisions with most every aspect of my life, and be responsible for the outcomes of said decisions.

Again, I feel for your loss of your friend...but it happens, and I don't feel it is the function of the govt. to protect us from ourselves....which hinders freedom for all.

Yes, but for the most part...that news has virtually no effect on the common American's daily life...so we generally don't care that much what else is happening in the world.

It is a large country, and it is easy to grow up here, and never see the majority of our own country, much less see what's outside our borders. Honestly, unless you want to travel, there's not that much need for it....the US has so many diverse areas that visiting inside can be one and one can still get culture shock.

Americans in the NE are quite different (cuisine, accents, colloquialisms, scenery, etc) from the west coast, and the middle of the US and for damned sure of the South and Southwest. In many ways, often the states are like small countries unto themselves, which isn't a bad thing....

But really....not a lot of news in the rest of the world has much effect on the common US citizen, and hence...we don't go out of our way to look at it.

Heck, there's enough going on HERE...and people here don't seem to really keep up with it much, which is sad.

Things like appliance repair...are like mowing the lawn or washing and ironing my own shirts.

Can I do those? Sure (if I bought a lawnmower)...but I'd spend my two days a week, filling my very limited free time doing those chores, and having little time to do the things I like to do (I live in New Orleans, and there is ALWAYS some fest or something going on), or to even stay home occasionally, and tinker with the things that interest me.

So, it is worth it to me, to spend $1.99/dress shirt for laundering and ironing....$10.99/5 pairs of pants to dry clean....$30 every couple weeks for the neighborhood kid to mow my yard.....etc.

And with that dishwasher...well, I might look to see if it was something quick.....but if not a quick fix and required me buying a bunch of tools (I don't own many), spending all weekend to research, etc, well, it just isn't worth it to me.

I'd rather pay someone to come fix it quick, or haul it off and bring me a new one.

The core problem is that it appears that people who are black in the US are more likely to be in poverty than the national average.

True...but I think a lot of this, in this day in age, is a problem the black community has with their value system. You don't see blacks (largely) trying to promote someone getting an education, and trying to get a job and have good family life.

The careers they often glorify are:

    1. Athlete

    2. Rapper / Thug

Well, #1, just doesn't happen to the majority of people, and well, #2 doesn't happen that often either, and strangely enough, #2 has glorified connections with music to gang life...and that's another dead end street.

What can be done about it? You can't legislate it...it has to come from the black community themselves. I've heard leaders, and successful black people extoll the same....Bill Cosby for example, stands up and has said it like it is, for blacks to take responsibility for their own lives and success, for fathers to be responsible to their children.

Sadly, often, other blacks put them down for telling the truth that many out there see.

Back when I was in school...I saw this in action. I saw fellow black students, who WERE head of the class, involved in the school (student govt., student body president), in the honors classes.....yet, they were openly put down by the majority of blacks in the school....actually telling him to "stop acting white". I mean....with that kind of attitude and culture that perpetuates itself....sure, you see blacks stay in poverty. You also see the ones that DO get an education and work and succeed...move the fuck out of the black community, so that their kids don't get caught up in that 'culture', which often leads nowhere, and at its worst...prison and/or death.

Sure, there is still racism. For that matter, you see it on BOTH sides of the black and white line....lots of hatred towards whites from blacks, I see that too. But it isn't the impediment to success that it was decades ago. Somehow, the culture of victimhood for blacks, needs to be tossed out and have a culture of success and hard work and family values embraced.

But, like I said before, you can't legislate that. It somehow has to be generated from within....but only the black community can do that themselves, and well.....that certainly doesn't seem to be working, at least from someone like myself looking in from the outside.
