But then, when I get to about 15 mph I still reach toward the console to shift into second even though it's been probably a decade since I've driven a manual transmission.
Well, thankfully, I can still say that I've never owned a car with an automatic transmission, I'm manual only!!
Cell phones and internet have become mandatory parts of life for MOST people in the industrialized world.
I would have to disagree....
I've worked in IT for decades, and until I did work from home (i.e. went into an office), I have never once had my work depend on me:
1. Have a cell phone
2. Have an internet connection at home.
I've had landlines in the past...that sufficed for calls at home,
So...while it is HANDY and convenient and a great help, I don't think we've reached the tipping point to where internet connectivity and a cell phone are necessities of life that you cannot live without.
You know...I just miss having a physical, metal KEY
My latest car is the first one I've owned that just has the key fob, that if present allows start of the car with a button.
I guess it is from decades of muscle memory, but even after I push the button to turn it off, before I get out, my right hand reaches over near the steering wheel to grab the keys.
I don't suppose I'll ever get used to it.
I'm guessing with fobs, much like this cell phone option...if you run out of batteries, you are SOL if you need to drive somewhere, even in an emergency....?
If I live in say MO.....and the state of NM sends you a letter or bill....just WTF can they do to you if you don't pay or what can they do to compel you living in another state to give that state some money?
Over regulation, cost of entry, corporate cronies in government, high taxation, have all conspired to hurt small businesses.
It's a Democrat/Republican problem though. You cannot pick just one. They are all to blame. If you want a healthy functioning economy with light regulation and sensible government spending & taxation, then you cannot vote for anyone in those two parties.
Yep...and it is getting so bad, that ONLY the big guys can afford full time staff dedicated to the tax and paperwork....keeps the upstarts out.
Aside from the amazing music he's given the world, I sincerely hope he donates his body to science so they can study his DNA and everything else...to see how he just still keeps on processing oxygen.
Although he'll likely still outlive all of us here on/. , I hope future generations can learn from whatever keeps him going....and going....and going.....
I went with Playstaton VUE because it has a built in DVR capability from the get go.
I thought I saw where SlingTV and DIRECTTV's streaming services both were adding DVR capability?
I bought a TIVO, lifetime subscription built in for my OTA recordings...between that, PSVUE, Netflix and my Amazon PRIME that I get with my PRIME....I'm more than set and I never miss a program I wanna watch....
Mutt does that, I have it installed locally and pull my GMail account nightly for backup purposes.
I tried that a couple years back, but every time I'd fire up Mutt...it would take forever trying to download every freaking email on the server each time (at the time was near 65K or so I think)....
I could never figure out the configuration to keep track locally what it had and just download the "new" ones....
Te repeat sibling post a bit: these tests are basically IQ tests. IQ is the best predictor of high school success, colleege succes, and life success (better than wealth of parents), with a correlation of about 0.5 IIRC, meaning it explains about 25% of results. As noted above, tests like this aren't entirely fair for low-income test-takers, for a variety of cultural reasons, but work quite well for the mainstream.
Ok...except for how is the ACT or SAT unfair for lo-income students?
I mean....4+4 is the same no matter what strata of society your come from, no?
I never saw anything on the ACT that could be answered differently based on your background or neighborhood you grew up in....facts are facts where those tests are concerned.
Contractors get no respect in California. We work side by side employees, but get none of their benefits.
Well, if you are a REAL contractor, you know you calculate your bill rate to take into consideration you paying your health care insurance and HSA, your time off for vacation and sick, etc.
That's one reason contractors' hourly bill rates look to be incredibly high, but things like that and retirement savings, etc...are all parts you pay out of that bill rate.
It is nice, to be able to come and go as you please much more than W2 employees, and you get nice tax write offs that the W2 folks don't get.
There are pros and cons to both sides of the equation....but if you do it right, contracting can give you benefits over the regular employees.
If nothing else, they usually want to work the W2 salary employees OT more often than the contractors, because the have to pay the contractors for those hours, which they get for "free" off the W2 salaried employees....that's one big benefit.

I can see the Feds being able to get you for federal tax invasion.
But, I'm wondering if a state, you don't live in, never enter....can reach over state lines to bring you in.....
It's going to be interesting to see where this ends up.
If I live in say MO.....and the state of NM sends you a letter or bill....just WTF can they do to you if you don't pay or what can they do to compel you living in another state to give that state some money?
I would guess this should affect draft beer in bars, but why not use natural carbonation in the bottles?
It works when I brew beer and bottle it (although I do prefer to keg it and use CO2 myself, but I do still bottle some).
In the good old days, when how you played, sang and composed songs mattered more than how you looked on TV.
Yep...and it is getting so bad, that ONLY the big guys can afford full time staff dedicated to the tax and paperwork....keeps the upstarts out.
I wonder if they'll ban gun videos too, or any other perfectly legal activities/topics....that might go against their political bent?
Isn't cocaine still really, really expensive?
If so, then WTF is wasting it letting it go down the sink and into the waste water supply?
Genes baby...genes.

Look, I"m no huge Trump fan, but didn't the Crimea invasion and occupation take place under Obama's watchful eye?

Yep...sometimes it is just too much shit to carry to bring that stuff, so yet...I watch the TV.
And even if I do bring it....I like to watch content on the much larger TV screen than a tiny laptop or tablet..
But on a serious note, will be you able to disable and turn the fucking thing OFF??
...when PEOPLE start talking and arguing with themselves like this, we start to consider medicating them quickly.
Ok, how long ago was this period of time of the metal straw?
My neck beard is getting quite old, and I have never in my life seen a metal straw.
I"d never heard of such a thing till an earlier /. thread on this a few months ago.
I never saw them in the 60's through now....some time before that?
Well, in Logan's Run, you only got to live to age 21.
So far...doing MUCH better than that!!!
Still waiting for them to develop "Muscle"....
It's an old tried and true deterrent.
Well, it certainly makes a better environment for the muggers....

Well, i you have trouble taking tests....you're going to have a LOT of problems with trying to go to college period.
So, I'd say learning how to prepare for an admissions exam would be good practice for going to college.
If you can't pass that first test....then you need to work on yourself before you jump into the real thing.
Ok...except for how is the ACT or SAT unfair for lo-income students?
I mean....4+4 is the same no matter what strata of society your come from, no?

....we cater to the lowest common denominator......
