"For a lot of people, watching sports is not a waste of time because they ultimately use it as a tool for socialising..."
Absolutely!!
For me, I'm not a huge sports fan, but I love going to the local bars/sports bars with friends and drinking and eating and yelling a bit at the screen.
Not to mentioned....often some good looking chicks at these places too, drinking, jumping, getting generally excited. Kinda primes the pump there a bit, you know?
Yeah...I actually tried to tune in to watch a little soccer with the US against the UK I think.
I could not for the life of me figure what the hell that buzzing sound was...but was VERY annoying, especially with a slight hangover from the night before.
Between that, and the action getting a little boring, I couldn't watch it for long.
I just figured something was terribly wrong with the audio portion of the broadcast...technical problems or something, but that buzzing was annoying as hell.
"You obviously are not involved with a female if you don't think that her version of compromise is getting her way."
Obviously you need to grow a pair of cajones...and tell said female how it is going to be.
If she doesn't like it...there's another one out there.
:)
Ok, seriously, compromise has to go both ways. Otherwise, you're gonna be miserable if you subjugate yourself to her all the time. You pick your battles. Let's face it...most of the little shit isn't worth that much to argue about because it isn't anything YOU really care about that much. But if it is something YOU find important, put your foot down. They didn't used to refer to it as "being the man of the family" for nothing. And besides, if you let her walk all over you, she won't respect you...and next thing you know, she'll be leaving you. I'm not saying be an asshole, but, being a doormat isn't going to win and keep her in the long run.
"I think it comes more from male tendencies to show off, flaunt power, and general aggressiveness that is built into us. Hell, that's generally why we LOVE fast and powerful cars, and they actually mean something to us more than they do with women, in general.
I pity you and your shallow life."
Hmm..not sure what shows me to have a shallow life because I state that in general men seem to enjoy fast/powerful cars on a level far above what the same type cars mean to women?
Now, if you misread something in there to the effect that cars mean more to me THAN women, no, I didn't say that.
I would put forth, however, that while you cannot fuck a car (legally in most states at least), a fine automobile will not cheat on you with another car and won't leave you broken hearted and while at the same time getting a lawyer to take half of your assets.
I dunno if it is playing games so much as being 'male'...as far as driving on a more extreme basis (I hate the wreckless word, it implies necessarily unsafe with disregard to current road conditions). I was reading an article the other day in Men's Health that said while women have more wrecks per mile than men do....that men have a greater percentage of fatalities than women.
I think it comes more from male tendencies to show off, flaunt power, and general aggressiveness that is built into us. Hell, that's generally why we LOVE fast and powerful cars, and they actually mean something to us more than they do with women, in general.
And, one certainly doesn't buy a Porsche or a Vette to drive at 20mph everywhere.
" Destruction or defacement of government/private property will still land you in trouble, even if you made your own laser from off the shelf and hand-crafted parts. It may as well have been a BB gun you bought at Walmart, except I'd be pretty sure you'd still get some extra charges tacked on by the ATF for building a weapon."
Maybe not...say if you used a lower powered laser, that just 'blinded' the cameras when you were present, but with no permanent damage?
"They didn't screw anyone over..It is your choice to upgrade or downgrade you plan away from the Unlimited data plan. They are not forcing you to upgrade to a different phone. I am keeping my Iphone 3g/Unlimited plan until i am ready to move off the plan.. Then I will make the choice whether to stick with ATT or not at that time.. They didn't say you will have this option forever..And guess what when you contract expires, you will still be on the unlimited plan until you consciously choose to move to a different plan."
I thought I read that if you had the unlimited plan, and upgraded to the new iPhone, you could choose to be grandfathered in....at least if you are qualified to upgrade here June/July I believe.
Not sure if later upgrades will granfather in...hoping so.
"i could have sworn that there are findings that shows happiness to be more about who you spend your time with, then how much luxuries you can buy or experience."
That sounds good on paper, but through experience and observation, I find that that alone is not nearly enough...if so, why do most couples' problems (splits, divorces) take place due to money issues?
If you have enough money, you can spend time with those you like, do things that are fun with them...and let's face it, if good 'toys' sucked so badly, why do some many people buy and enjoy them?
"You sound like you're over 50-60 years old. College costs have ballooned in the last couple of decades, and they continue to skyrocket. In the meantime, more and more kids come from broken homes or have single parents; families like this have fewer financial resources."
Well, mid-40's. But I had to pay out of state tuition, I think it cost about $10K-$11K a year when I was going to school. My parents were middle to maybe slightly upper middle class...both worked and I think most of my Mom's salary went to my tuition, etc.
But yes, it helped that I was an only child (yay!), and parents stayed together.
Like I said, I worked all summers (except some years with summer school)....and I gave that money to my parents of which they doled out to me throught the school year for spending money, food, gas...etc. But that way, I didn't have to work during the school year.
"There's another important consideration: for most students, getting this education (for either path here) requires money, usually in the form of student loans. "
Do most students today have to take out student loans? Back when I was growing up, most peoples' parents saved up for their kids college tuition, and that was usually enough to pay all or at least most of the bill. Most everyone I knew grew up and had this set up, and we all generally worked during the summers, to make money to help with school year expenditures, clothes...etc.
Do parents no longer save to pay for their kids to go to college so they can not have to take out loans, nor have to work during the school year so they can devote most of their time to studies (ok and some partying too)?
"You are going to aim it at the speed camera from your moving vehicle at 30+ mph? Color me impressed."
Well, I guess if stopped at the signal could do it then..otherwise, need to either be a passenger when doing it, or having the passenger do it.
Hmm...if only I could get some kind of automatic tracking system, that would lock onto said stop/speed cameras and blast them at will as you drive by them?!?
Now THAT would sell like hotcakes...I'd be one of the first people in line for one.
"The youngest and brightest are being sucked up by the field that pays: structured finance. As a country you've put financial innovation ahead of scientific and this is the natural outcome."
Well, you can't really blame the young people. I mean, the goal for most people, is to live a happy and comfortable life. That requires MONEY, to enable you to live in a nice home in a safe area, to support your family in a comfortable lifestyle (including good schools, vacation time, some of the luxuries in life). Now, when you are starting college, and you see a choice between two paths (and you think you'd be likely happy at either as a career) which would you take? The one with the long hours studying to get a job with long hours period and low pay? Or, would you take the path that led to more normal hours and levels of stress, which paid more?
I mean, that IS the reason for going to school and getting a job right? To enable one to make as good of a living as possible, right?
I know a good life means different things to different people, but for the large majority, that is working just as much as needed to make as much money as possible, so as to enable them to enjoy a good lifestyle.
Let's face it..frankly, if I didn't have to actually work for a living (say I won the powerball and was independently wealthy), I'd sure as shit never work another day again in my lifetime!! I could spend my days quite easily in pursuit of fun stuff.
I venture to guess about 99% of the rest of the planet would do the same.
I'm guessing this blue laser would be quite effective at 'disabling' those pesky stop light/speeding cameras the city has recently been trying to set up, eh?
"Currently, a license is required to own most weapons. It is possible to get a license to own an automatic rifle or shotgun, or to own a rocket launcher (listed as an infernal machine)."
Well, sure you have to have special licensing for weapons other than common guns, shotguns and handguns.
I'm not sure what state you live in, but where I live, I do not have to have any type of special license to own a rifle, shotgun or handgun. I don't have to register any weapons I acquire, and since I usually buy/sell used weapons with other private individuals, there is no record of transaction or background check at all with the city/state/federal government.
I guess it varies a lot from state to state....with it, in general, being much more restricted in the NE and West Coastal areas of the US?
"I used to have one, but found it pretty much useless. When they're using a trigger on the radar gun (which most do), there's no warning unless they checked a car ahead of yours. Attentive driving works a lot better, and it's a lot cheaper, since my eyeballs were installed before birth, and rarely need upgrades.:)"
Interesting. I have a Valentine One, and it has MORE than paid for itself many, many, many times in what it has saved me in potential fines. I actually never look at the speedometer till it goes off. I find I'm usually in enough traffic where they're lighting people up all the time even with short triggering times, I often pick them up more than a mile ahead of me.
On long hwy trips, heck...the CB radio and truckers usually have me knowing where the cops are cities ahead of where they are...the radar detector in those cases, is the backup help.
I'm always attentive too, none of those will help if a live one gets on your tail to try to get your speed, so, I'm constantly vigilant about checking mirrors, etc.
Every tool in the arsenal that helps is a good one IMHO.
:)

"There are plenty of apps developed for Vista and 7 that do obnoxious shit like default putting downloaded files in ~\Documents\Downloads. For fuck's sake, there's ~\Downloads for that, and it works quite nicely. Yes, I'm looking at you, Chrome. Smart enough to avoid UAC by installing into AppData, but ignorant and audacious enough to break the much improved home folder in the same stroke."
Wow...so, did Vista and 7 get Unix style folders?!?! No more C: drive and the like?? Cool, I'll have to check that out!
" I think it'd be tough to explain to a cop "oh, I was testing for my maximum fuel efficiency, and you just messed up my test." or better yet "I'm doing the speed which is most economical for this vehicle."
"In Australia we've always used L/100KM as our measurement for vehicle efficiency, I've always wondered why the US is so different when it comes to this. We also have a government website for old & new car efficiencies which is most handy when choosing a car."
I guess because for most of us over here, MPG isn't the primary qualifier for choosing one car over another. Functionality and performance usually are to most people in my experience.
Absolutely!!

It does seem to make pretty much anything in life MORE interesting!!
I've often wondered why they don't generally serve drinks at the zoo.....

Err.....girls don't like seeing nekkid men?!?!
News to me...

But, your mileage may vary...
Female, that is.....
I think it comes more from male tendencies to show off, flaunt power, and general aggressiveness that is built into us. Hell, that's generally why we LOVE fast and powerful cars, and they actually mean something to us more than they do with women, in general.

Isn't testosterone a wonderful thing??

Kinda makes the new tech a moot point, eh?
