"what makes you think this is any different than in a typical town in (insert state/country you live in)?"
Wasn't there a recent study in the US, that in the water supplies they found mostly pharmceutical drugs...even levels of birth control, etc.
I remember years back, hearing that you 'could' get tested positive for cocaine, just due to you handling currency. The reason being that not only were people using bills rolled up to snort it, but, that often money and the drugs were packed together for storage / transport. I'd heard that almost any bill could be picked at random, and test positive for traces of coke.
"It also means that everyone that worked on the album and were not paid outright get screwed...often times, if you only pay the artist, folks like the songwriters and the producer and even the little guys that did something for substandard pay because they believed the work was good and would eventually get paid for it -"
What? Artists don't write their own songs anymore??
Ok, I know the Brittney Spears types don't (hell what they do barely qualifies as singing on their albums), but, I was talking about artists, so that excludes that category.
"New Orleans is sinking because of the diversion of the Mississippi river (one of the reasons that I heard about on PBS's Nova many years ago). Maybe we an start working with nature a bit more by, for example, not building cities and towns in flood plains."
I guess they should have known better back 300+ years ago when settling NOLA.
:)
Actually, you do have a point in some regards tho. When I came back after Katrina they had a very interesting visual in the newspaper. They showed the basic original layout of New Orleans...from the French Quarter, to basically down St. Charles and the Garden Dist. and Uptown area.
Then, they showed an overlay that showed the areas of New Orleans today that were NOT flooded by the levee breaks for Katrina. Amazingly enough, they coincided. It appears they WERE smart enough hundreds of years ago, not to build in areas where it would flood badly. But, over the decades...swamp land was cleared and drained, and housing was built there (9th ward, New Orleans East, Lakeview...most of Metairie and Kenner). Sure enough, when bad things happen...nature tends to try to reclaim those areas.
But, do remember, New Orleans is where it is for a reason...the mouth of the MS river. It serves as a VERY important port to the US, not to mention it and the surrounding areas are vital to a great deal of US seafood, and energy work and transport. It is older than the US by a good number of years, that should tell you something about the importance of the location.
Then again...every area has its problems. CA with the wildfires and earthquakes. The midwest (Iowa, etc) seems to have had some nasty flooding recently too, middle of the country (TX panhandle area, OK, AR, Kansas) all are plagued with tornadoes annually. There's hardly anywhere that doesn't have a problem of some sort with Mother Nature.
"If you have any discretionary income at all, then you have excess. In the US, that's most of us. In other countries.. not so much.
Our definition of excess includes a car that costs more than $50,000. Most people's definition of excess is having their own car.
Our definition of excess is a residence with more than 2 rooms per person. Most people's definition of excess is fewer than 2 people to a room.
While poverty certainly exists in the US, odds are you're not in that group, and nobody you know is in that group either. If so, you're in a very small minority. Even our homeless can probably scrounge together one meal/day, and most seem to have money to blow on booze and smokes.
Our current economic crisis is not because there's no enough to go around, but because we (as a nation) tried to live beyond our means. For most of us, tightening our belts means passing on a new TV, moving to a smaller place, taking a more modest vacation, or selling our overpriced car.. not skipping meals and collecting cans."
So what?
We're not here to take care of the world, our government is here to look out for OUR interests, above all others.
We have a huge debt, and we need to pay it off.
If we quit trying to fund/bribe countries, that's a start in paying that debt down.
From what I read of CL's lawyers earlier releases, it seemed that they could indeed have withstood and won any court battles that would have come their way. I was hoping some good precedents would have been set....
As another poster in this thread pointed out...security threat allowing you to connect to multiple networks at once.
Every vpn setup I've had...locks down all network connections, and all..through the vpn connection only while it is connected. Indeed all traffic goes through it.
This is just the security measures they have had...they do not want to risk having machines connected into their networks, that are simultaneously connected to other networks or the internet...I kinda figured most any setup would want that level of security if they were going to the trouble of setting up a vpn connection.
"how is it possible that a VPN connection is doing DNS to an external name server? Should not every internet request flow over the vpn from the client to the server. once it reaches the internal vpn server the server should know how to route the internal addresses and for external addresses it could use an external domain name server. the problem described seems like it should not exist. what am I missing?"
Thank you, that is what confused the hell out of me too when I read it.
When I VPN somewhere...I don't see the outside world directly from my box anymore...all is redirected to the internal site/servers I am vpn'ing into. I kinda assumed that was the point and practice with vpn software...?
But even that isn't working much. I mean, I'm working with federal govt. entities, and they are mandating that you can NOT download and use IE8.
They have some apps that only work with IE, but, they allow Firefox, and from what I've seen, have no problems with letting you install and use plug-ins and update to your hearts desire. But, they have memos out saying IE8 is verboten, and will be removed from your box if they scan and find it.
"Because if the world has a shortage of anything, it's women that are out of your league, right?"
Not really...just a shortage of the ones up to my standards.
:)
Man, lately I've been out in large public gatherings..French Quarter Fest, Jazzfest, etc.
I'm just more and more amazed at how FAT and overweight everyone is?!?! I dunno what made me just start noticing more. But man...more and more, I see chicks out...and they have great looking hair, faces...dress well, but, wow...there's enough 'meat' there for two or more women.
I'm not saying guys aren't fat too...they are. I'm just not interested in fscking any of the guys...so, it is the girls I'm critical of. And frankly, the more guys that are tubs....well, that lessens the competition for someone that is fit, has a decent job/money.
I won't even go into how shocked I am at how many little kids are all just horribly overweight....it is one thing for an adult to do what they want with their bodies, but, looking at some of these kids...that borders on child abuse. We never had that many kids fat when I grew up. Then again, we were always out playing outdoors in the neighborhood when I grew up, doing physical activity most of the time. I guess that sadly isn't done anymore for some reason.
"Obama put out a paper saying that the DEA will NOT raid anymore medical marijuana distributors/growers, actually upholding a states rights. So unless you papers arent in order you will not be raided by the DEA."
Well, that was likely an 'executive order' if anything that official. And as you have seen, ANY new president can repeal any former exec. order.
We need legal precedent, or a constitutional amendment (better) to legally define what the reach the feds DO have with respect to the interstate commerce act that affect so many things. We need this to roll back the fed power to what it should be in general...
"We here in South Carolina applaud your rhetoric but thanks to that Yankee jackass Lee, your assertion that we are state citizens first and US citizens second has been proven false.
For all the crap people give the south, I'm glad y'all are realizin' what the whole "state rights" thing was about. I always read with interest the rants most recently from Cali and Texas governments about their relationship with the Fed."
Actually, I am from and live in the deep south. My college roommate once joked that anyone born north of I-10 (that passes through New Orleans) was a yankee. He was a bit stringent on that definition...hahaha.
But, rather than get into a discussion on the war of northern aggression, lets let the past be where it is...enjoy the fact that we are still one large country, but, try to undo some of the ill effects of the past, and support these laws that are trying to help reassert states' rights, and give the 10th amendment some teeth again.
"Unless the DEA decides to go after you. This is why not everything should be a federal offense."
Well, hopefully with the recent trend of more states trying to assert more of states rights...maybe these will be repealed.
I heard something on the news this morning, of something going on in Montana with their gun laws that are challenging the Fed. interestate commerce powers. Since this is tied to guns, it just may fasttrack itself to the SCOTUS. I for one sure would love to see much of the Fed's power struck down and more narrowly define the interstate commerce powers the Federal govt. has used to strong arm the states over a lot of things.
"IANAL, but I don't think that's right. If it were, no PI could tail a husband suspected of cheating on his wife because a PI couldn't get a warrant."
Ah...but, a PI is NOT a police officer, he does not have the same rights/responsibilities....nor the power to arrest or charge you with a crime.
He (although often licensed somewhat) is a private citizen, so it is different. I supposed if you discovered one of these people following you all over, you might could have THEM charged with stalking.
Remember, most of these 'rights' have to do with what the state can/cannot do to you....not private individuals or entities.
"It isn't that strange, state laws are anything but uniform."
Nothing strange about it at all!! That's the way things are (supposed) to be set up. Rather than an all knowing all powerful federal govt. telling you what to do...the most power to make laws should be at the state and then local level. This is done in that state and local are more apt to serve their populations needs and wishes better. People living in NYC, and Tucson, AZ have vastly different needs and wishes due to climate, land mass, and culture of the people. You are a citizen of your state first, and then a citizen of the United States...
It is great that way, in that if you don't like the laws and regulations where you live, you are free to move to a state that is more in line with your way of thinking. Wanna have medicinal pot easily? Move to CA. Things like that.
Hehehe...if you think these laws are wide in variance....just look at liquor laws not only from state to state, but, from county to county (or parish to parish in LA)....those are the most fscked up things I've ever seen when traveling.
But, what you observed isn't a bad thing or strange thing. The US was set up that way!!!
"It's got to do with a credit check. You need to surrender your SSN for the normal credit check, and they use the results to determine your deposit. Very few companies will do an alternate (less informative/reliable) check that does not require your ssn.
Without the credit check, you can still get a phone, 100% of the time. You will just have to pay a very large deposit, the largest possible for people that have horrible credit. Anyone that tells you that your ssn is required to get an iPhone is out of touch with reality."
I have no problem putting down a large deposit. I'd just heard it often took a lot of time and effort to find a manager that even knows they CAN do that in lieu of a SSN for credit check.
I've given deposits for my utilities...and even my current cell phone. I usually get them back within a year or so....
Heck...you get get Dell P4's for like $30 or less on eBay pretty easily.
I've been playing with the idea you had, stuffing them with drives. I wanted to raid them, but, had trouble because I needed the CD drive to boot the install disk from...so, just ended up making all the disks in the thing as LVM's...when install was done, replaced the CD rom with a last large HD. I figure I'll do that..and then just mirror with like 2 other boxes just like it maybe...?
"There's also how we hold on to some obsolete terms such as "dialing a phone" even when it is done on a keypad instead of a spinning rotary dial (even in science fiction, you have the DHD (Dial Home Device) which only ever spun rotary style on the animated Stargate Infinity). And though "don't touch that remote" has largely supplanted "don't touch that dial" for TVs, we still talk about "rewinding" video even when there is no spool of tape to be rewound, and probably will for a very long time to come."
Yep, and artists still put out "albums".
Ok, I know that they are putting out some vinyl again these days, and I'm glad, but, not that many people know anything but CD's, and now whatever they get online.
*sigh*, I'm getting older, I used to take pride that I used to could have someone name a Led Zeppelin song, and I could quickly tell you which album, which side and track number.
This is a reason why they have to pretty much pull teeth from me, in order for me to give my SSN to any one or any entity that is not related directly to SSN monies and benefits.
I don't give them to insurance people, I don't give them to Dr.'s or medical institutions, or even utilities (cable, phone). etc). I don't give it out to hardly anyone. Sometimes it is a fight, but, very seldom has it happened, that when I was going to walk away from the transaction, did they not cave and say "ok".
The next battle, as I understand it, will be trying to sign up for an iPhone without giving an SSN. I've heard it can be done, but, sometimes take a number of tries before finding the salesperson/mrg that will do it.
Anecdotal, but, sounded plausible to me.
I'm surprised this 'feature' wasn't already known about and defeated by now....
What? Artists don't write their own songs anymore??

I agree with you that this is the case on most issues, but in this situation, this reversal of decisions was just good common sense.
So what?

We have a huge debt, and we need to pay it off.
If we quit trying to fund/bribe countries, that's a start in paying that debt down.
While I'm very concerned about the amount of money they are currently spending.
Why in the HELL should/would they be spending our money (that we don't have) on any people that aren't citizens of the United States??
I don't mind helping out when you have excess.....but, right now, we do not, and one thing to do, would be to cut out foreign aid.
From what I read of CL's lawyers earlier releases, it seemed that they could indeed have withstood and won any court battles that would have come their way. I was hoping some good precedents would have been set....

The supermodel with good attitude gene set?
Now THAT is some research I'd pay extra tax monies to fund!!

Not necessarily, he might be backing them up for Netflix, and sending them back.
Who knows...they 'may' need a copy back some day.
