Moving from an old 'in-use' system..to a better one, with a functional data model, and interface. Having to be backwards compatible and all with old systems, (not only data conversion, but, requirements that you also feed other legacy systems) is what makes much of this so tough.
I dunno. Maybe design new medical centers to use a better designed system. And then, over the years, one institute at a time, start moving over their data into it, so they could eventually adopt it.
Doctors REALLY want to spend most of their time doing medical things, not data entry. But really with all the crap, legacy systems held together presently by silly string...you really almost need to start OVER. But that costs money and time. And with the govt. involved in it.....even worse, red tape.
"Personally I think my taxes are reasonable given the benefits I receive from my government. If anything, they could probably be raised a bit so the government wasn't needing to borrow to support me."
You know...there is NOTHING stopping you from giving a little more. Heck, just don't take any deductions...etc
"Where were you complaining the last 8 years as the government ran up $TRILLIONS in debt,"
Actually, I was bitching about govt. spending then too.
Still, that is no reason not get get excited now, when after only a few months, the new administration has spent near DOUBLE what the previous admin spent.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't for a minute think the new administration would spend less than the previous one (which did spend like a drunken sailor), but, I had no clue they'd spend so much, so fast, on so much worthless stuff (not directly really aiming funds to fix the economy).
Quite the opposite where I live. One guy actually did go to trial for shooting someone from his balcony that was breaking into his car and killed him. The jury acquitted him.
I've heard of cops helping a home owner out by dragging the body of a shot thief that somehow made it out the door, so that it would look better in the photos for the crime scene for the homeowner.
Are you sure you have the correct drivers? There are seperate ones for older vs newer ones.
With the output and resolution problems...that sounds more like Xorg configuration issues....? If you're not doing it by hand..I'd suggest finding the specs for the card (modelines, resolutions, etc) and put those in there by hand. That should do it...?
"i agree with everything you said. i meant that i would first order an intruder to the ground or allow them to flee, and only shoot if there is a clear threat. i certainly am not going to wait for someone to pop off a shot if they have a bared firearm. but, likewise i want to give someone a fair chance to change their mind before they force me to do something that i don't want to. "
While I respect your views, I do not do the same. If someone is in my house illegally, ie. they have broken in, I will shoot immediately without warning. I will shoot to kill and will not stop till they are totally incapacitated. I will not risk them reacting at all.
Different thoughts on life I guess, but, if someone has broken into my house, I assume they are there to kill me, and I will act as soon as I have a clear shot. Unless they are lucky, they will not leave my front door still breathing.
"Most schools filter web access. Many libraries do as well. Some employers filter web access. "
Well, that's different.
When I read a headline like above, I'm thinking national filtering and control by the government, not by generally 'private' entities. Businesses internal and publically offered hotspots are free to serve or deny as they please, it is their network. Schools, while being generally a public funded entity, is a special case due to it housing children, and being responsible for what they view and access.
But, as far as public use of ISP provided connectivity, it is pretty much free of filtering...at least so far. I know there are those that would try to impose it....
The govt. never saw this 'internet' thing coming, and I'll bet they wish to hell they could have at the beginning, so as to control it better. Let's hope they are NOT successful at doing so retroactively.
"As filtering becomes ever more common in democratic countries such as the US, perhaps Tor (and similar tools such as I2P), will become even more valuable.""
Ok, where and when in the US did filtering become 'common'??
I'm hearing about it becoming common in other western countries...and am afraid it will happen here, but, I'm not aware of it being common here?
"i won't shoot first, but i will if you threaten me. it's called self-defense and if you don't like it, don't go around attacking people on the high seas or in my front room."
I will shoot first, in fact, I won't be asking who it is till I've about emptied my 2nd clip.
If you have a gun, and are defending against an intruder in your house, you'd better assume they have deadly intent to your and/or your family, and use your gun aimed to kill, and use your advantage if you have on....SHOOT FIRST.
Hesitation with gun will get you just as dead as without one, except you have a better chance if you are armed.
I've often told people, that if you have a hesitation to use a gun....then you really shouldn't own one for protection.
"Like an ineffective government and global inequality."
Who said the world orlife should be a fair or equal place???
Never has been, never will be.
Hey, all the globe started off pretty much from square one....if some areas couldn't keep up, well, that's tough. They can try to catch up, but, it won't be easy...especially when they can't seem to govern themselves effectively, set up governments without jackass dictators, etc.
Like it is 'our' fault they haven't gotten it together over the past few centuries? Sorry...I don't see any reason to drag down leaders with people that just can't seem to do shit with their lives or their countries.
"This really has to be the cheapest, most effective method - so there must be some, likely political, reason that it's not being used. Much of the issue with arming crew members seems to revolve around 1) training and 2) what to do with the weapons in whatever random port the ship ends up at where weapons aren't welcome.
Picking up then dropping off paid mercs or active duty soldiers would go around that problem. But it seems like paying ransom is the current preferred action."
Well, how much training do you 'really' need? Shooting a gun is pretty easy.
As others have mentioned, when going to a port, just lock the guns away on the ship.
And as for the last point...sure, for now paying the pirates off has been the SOP, but, the pirates aren't just sitting on the beach drinking rum, they're investing that ransom money (millions of dollars) into better weaponry and electronic gear for surveillance and communications!!
If they don't stop paying them off now....the situation is gonna get worse and worse.
"Almost twice as expensive, per-capita, as compared to any other system in the world, while leaving 40M people completely without coverage?"
Without insurance coverage? That doesn't necessarily mean you go with healthcare.
If you are in need...you don't get turned away. You in real trouble, ER's can't turn you away. If you're really poor..there is already a govt. system...medicare (or medicade? I get them confused).
"The expenditure of time and resources indicates 1. possession of cash and 2. intent to compromise a system, both of which make you more likely to extract a large award of damages from an attacker in a court of law."
Why bother with all the new 'tech' that is probably expensive, etc. And just use something known to work....a simple fucking gun?!?!?
Geez, if this were my ship, I know I'd be packing some serious heat. A boat starts coming towards me....>bang
I do that for my home if an intruder comes in, why not on the high seas where you KNOW a threat like this is not un-common??
"Funny, then, that the US healthcare system is the most expensive one in the world."
Geez, it isn't that bad. From some of the posts here, you'd think we had tons of people dying in the streets here of a sore throat. It just isn't the case.
At at least with our system, you don't have your care 'rationed' to you by a govt. bureaucrat bean counter that thinks they know more than a medical Dr. At least I don't get put on a waiting list for something as drastic as surgery.
Sure, it has its problems, major ones. But, one of the major ones is...the damned insurance companies. If we could get them mostly out of the picture, and allow more things like HSA (Health Savings Accounts - you can load them up pre-tax, and it is not a use it or lose it thing like a FSA)....I think prices would get much more reasonable.
"The fact that they performed the replacement at NO charge is a positive for the Prius. I know quite a few that have bought these hybrids, they all seem very happy with them."
The problem is, the damned things are just so fugly.
If they made them look more like a Tesla, ok..now there's a nice looking car.
That's the thing...I don't think MOST people think evolution doesn't happen and isn't still happening, but, the question of where things start are what is often thought of when the two ideals are debated....
"As for arguments against a national sales tax... I already hate my money being taken and redistributed to other people, moreso when said people aren't even in my state. Why should I help subsidize someone living in another state? I want LESS tax overall, not more. I also have more say in my state government than I do the federal one... which means that if i do have to pay taxes, at least I get more say over what they are spent on."
Well, as I understand the FairTax...overall, you'd have less tax.
It would replace the income taxes currently taken out of your check before you get it. You'd now get the full amount, and the tax you pay, is based on how much your purchase.
Frankly, I'd think that if the states were collecting this tax...they'd actually have power back again, as that the feds would be dependent on the states giving them the tax dollars.
I dunno if that is written into how it works, but, it is a thought.....
I too am for keeping things more on a state level, as you said, they are more responsive to MY direct needs.
"A better argument is the potential for a huge black market to form around goods that are taxed. 5%-7% doesn't lend itself to a big black market forming (although you could argue the internet IS the current black market), but 20%+ will make people look for ways to avoid paying the sales tax."
Then again..would people really have incentive to do that?
Since people would have their FULL income coming in without taxes being withheld, they'd have much more money to spend, so it would be a wash with a larger sales tax since with more cash in hand vs today with less cash in hand and less tax (but increasing ones) on goods.
"It's actually quite the opposite. Rich people aren't generally affected by sales tax. That's because rich people generally put their money into real estate or invest in shares. Proportionally they use much less on living than the less wealthy do."
Well, those investments and savings don't just disappear, they go into banks and the like which generates a credit market, and jobs for other people. It doesn't sit there idle.
As for the proportion of money..at a level of existing...that just doesn't matter any more man. So what if it is less proportionally, why should that matter at all as an argument?
"It's a little far fetched to claim that lower classes only pay for food and rent. They also spend their money on consumer goods like TVs and computers, furniture, household equipment, cars and not least leisure and going out, all of which is hurt by sales tax."
Well, now wait, that's not an argument for paying a fair share of taxes, but, an argument that everyone deserves all the luxuries in life that are available.
I'm sorry, but tv's and computers are not required for life, they are luxuries that make life easier and nicer. No one has a 'right' to those things. Maybe if they couldn't afford them, they might take extra effort to make up for not getting an education the first time around, and try to better themselves to get better paying jobs so they can have these luxuries.
I do agree that shelter is a basic need...so, I'd be for an exemption on rent and/or house payments for a sales tax. Although, I've never heard of rent being taxable?!?! I've certainly never paid tax on top of my rent check.
In the US, at least...equal opportunity, does not mean equal results. No one deserves the 'good life'. But to give people a break, sure, I'm all for exempting things needed for basic life in this day in age like food and shelter.
"A particularly cunning ninja would plant evidence that made it look like pirates performed a particular deed. You know, things like parrot droppings on the floor, and spraying walls with "arghhh, me 'arties"."
Much like recent pirates, I figure that ninjas experiencing accurate head shots, wouldn't be doing much but laying on the floor twitching and bleeding.
That's just because we don't share a border with them.

I was thinking about the near 2 trillion dollar spending stimulus, omnibus and other budgets Obama has spent so far
Actually, I was bitching about govt. spending then too.

So, yes, a money tree would be a nice project.
Otherwise, I just dunno how we're gonna pay for everything here in the very recent past.
I've heard of cops helping a home owner out by dragging the body of a shot thief that somehow made it out the door, so that it would look better in the photos for the crime scene for the homeowner.

For that matter, I just usually recommend to people to avoid ALL ATI cards, and go for NVIDIA instead. The just generally seem to 'work' under Linux.
At least, that's been my experience.
Unless you are a three letter govt. agency.
Why bother with all the new 'tech' that is probably expensive, etc. And just use something known to work....a simple fucking gun?!?!?
