I disconnected On-Star from my GM Vehicle and odd things started happening, the most annoying of which was the cruise control would randomly stop working. The dealership plugged the On-Star module back in and voila everything worked fine again. They will integrate these systems so that you will not be able to unplug them.
Hmm..wondering if you leave the module plugged in, can you then find the antenna it uses and cover it with a faraday cage type unit to prevent its transmissions?
That is where you are really going wrong. Online is where ApplePay really shines, because it's giving the company a token that cannot be used for other purchases.
Interesting...
I"ve never seen a website that took Apple Pay online?
Maybe its there and I've not noticed it, but I don't recall seeing that as an option, usually just CC, and sometimes PayPall and Amazon Pay I'm seeing commonly online.
Is there any way for the car owner to disable these systems from "phoning home"??
I imagine it has to be a cellular connection in the car, is there a relatively simple way for the average person to disable this communication outlet?
I would have to imagine with new cars being so complex, that the gathering would be difficult if not impossible to stop, but it would seem easy to be able to disable or block the car from phoning home?
I don't want to voluntarily "bug" my house, sending audio and possibly even video to strangers out in the cloud with these always on products.
And..if I want to listen to music at home, I'll play it on my more than capable stereo/AV set up through real speakers, amps etc...and get the full pleasure out of the situation.
Ok, sure, I might have to get up...and go over to configure the playlist, but hell, I have to get up from time to time to get a beer anyway, so, what's the problem?
At least we have payment options (witch so far seem much more secure then the alternatives)
I dunno....
I still prefer, as much as possible, to use good, old fashioned analog cash for most of my transactions, at least the local ones.
And a simple regular CC i use for online stuff....I don't see the need for this Apple/Google Pay stuff.
I can't imagine wanting to have my financial stuff on my phone which can be stolen and then me left in the lurch if that's my only method of paying shit.
Plus, I still enjoy the anonymity of my purchases when I use cash.
There are steps you can take to slow that down (like not signing up for FB), but you're not going to stop it without help from the lawmakers.
That was the point of my post, I was saying while I'm not in favor of most of what I consider intrusive, oppressive and anti-freedom type European laws and regulations on most things, I'm quite in favor of this type of thing, and with the US lawmakers would put forth some legislation such as Belgium did here.
That's not actually true. Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, and the urge often passes as quickly as it comes. A gun makes it quick and easy, so it's a method that allows a person to strike while the iron is hot. Jumping off of something high, or into traffic, or taking pills, etc all take a lot of time and effort, which gives the person time to change their mind.
But, that is a totally different thing. That is that person's choice...bad or otherwise.
As a lawful citizen and gun owner, I should not be lumped in or even have stats on folks like me associated with someone who has mental problems and is wanting to kill themselves.
Jumping off a bridge is quick and easy too...should we be worried about common sense bridge laws when that becomes popular?
A gun is just a tool like any other to a person wanting to commit suicide. It isn't special and should not be lumped in with gun deaths, a statistic that is bandied about as a reason to remove the right of the majority of gun owners in the US.
That said, Belgium is actually standing up to tracking companies.
You know, there's not much I'd like to see of Europe brought into the US (its ok for them, but I like things mostly how they are here).....BUT, I would like to see privacy rights and some restrictions on the unfettered gathering and sharing/selling of people's data by companies like FB.
I'd especially like it, if FB was mandated to remove any information or 'shadow' profiles of people that have NEVER even opted to join FB.
There are reasons people don't join FB and there is no reason for Facebook to gather, store and track people that are not a member of their site/organization.
Hey...they get me safely door-to-door for bars, parties (hell even during Mardi Gras to get to parade routes) so I no longer worry about drinking and driving.
It works for me at a very reasonable price point; I love the company!!!
Why? You have no expectation of privacy in public.
Yes, but I do think I have a reasonable expectation (especially with plate readers) to not be actively cataloged as to my whereabouts and easily followed daily and logged into systems that can at will re-create my travels and traverses during my days.
I don't so much mind being "seen"....I just don't want to be logged and tracked, the govt has no reason to know or keep that information if I"m not being actively suspected of a crime.
For shopping, I have a set of panniers. I get most fresh groceries at the farmers market downtown once a week, and fresh bread, milk products, and assorted stuff from one of several supermarkets not far of my commute, maybe 2 or 3 times a week. It's very rarely necessary, but if I need something big fast, I either order a cab, or I get a car from a car sharing organisation (this last happened 4 years ago;-).
I simply do not see how I would get a much as I generally buy weekly, some of it very bulky and heavy...home on a bike or public transport.
It's a lot healthier to stand. You'll be sitting at your desk all day and letting your arteries and bones degenerate. Best to stand as much as possible.
Also, get a standing desk at work.
I have a motorized standing/sitting desk....
And I work out at gym...but for traveling, I like to sit...or if reading for pleasure, sit.
I find that a drive in the car is exhilarating, but then again, I've only owned 2 seat sports cars....I love to jump in, crank it up....crank up the tunes and actually have a bit of "zen" time when driving.
I guess that's the difference when you ONLY think of a car as mere rote transportation.
Every time I fire my car up...its an adventure, even if only down to the drug store and back.
When I moved to Munich (1995), I sold my car after it stood useless and rusting for 18 months. Going by subway, it took me about 10 minutes to get to work (and the subway ran every 10 minutes). Going by bicycle was 20 minutes.
Ok...maybe that works for your work. i'm guessing you don't live in a climate to where the walk between public transport and home/office isn't very far AND doesn't experience wild weather conditions (hot and humid as hell like here in New Orleans).
But my question is how do you shop, specifically groceries?
I mean, I don't have public transport that lets off ANYWHERE near my house,...and say I want to grocery shop for the week. ON a normal week, I fill up the trunk and sometimes the passenger seat of my car with just normal buying for the week.
But what if you want have people over for a BBQ or crawfish boil in the back yard?
I'm not sure how, logically, I'd go back and forth to Costco, and then to a regular grocery store, to get and schlep a 14lb brisket and ribs for bbq...and a bag of hickory logs for the smoker...and all the other fixings for bbq beans, slaw, etc....and other goodies for a party on a bus or train???
I tend to like to buy in bulk when I can....good prices, lasts all week....especially staples. How do you do things like that if you have no car and no door-to-door capability for your weekly / monthly needs?
Hmm....well, if it does sound that good, AND...if Apple gives me a way to disable the Siri "always listening" parts, I might consider buying one for my office.
I"d like a really good sounding BT set up for my office, but I have no need nor want to bug my surroundings with an always on listening device talking to the internet.
The only people in a restaurant that make any decent money are the cooks (sometimes) and management.
Servers and bartenders are paid solely from tips. The "wage" is next to nothing. The restaurant probably pays more for FICA than towards their tipped employees wages.
Hmm...if you are a waiter or more especially a bartender, and are not making very significantly above minimum wage, they you are not doing it right and should either find a job you are more suited to, or possibly try another establishment.
Granted, it has been a LONG time since I was in school and the industry, but I make significantly more $$ waiting and that really jumped up for bartending when I was in school.
Some people maybe just aren't personable and don't know how to schmooz customers for tips, but if you are good at it, you can make a lot of money for a young person.
If you get more into the high end restaurants, you can make up to 6 figures a year as part of the wait staff.
can use Netflix or any other video streaming app and cast it to my TV as well-- I'm surprised you're just now hearing about this. Now VLC supports it you should be able to throw whatever from VLC to your TV.
Well, I've pretty much always had either a Roku or Amazon FireTV box on my televisions, and stream through those...I thought that was what most people used.
I'd never thought of using my cellphone to play stuff on the big screen, or use it as a remote like others here have described the casting thing as....interesting, but seems easier to use a real devoted streaming box and interface to do this type thing with...
If you have a chromecast device plugged into your TV, you can then display video from your phone or whatever on the bigger screen.
Hmm...I'm trying to wonder what video from a tiny phone looks like on a nice 4K TV, or even a regular 1080p tv....?
Interesting concept, but I'm trying to figure out why I'd want to do this..?
I have AmazonFireTV boxes on each TV (since I cut the cord)...so, I can watch all the YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime and other streaming videos I'd want in high quality....
That and I'm not watching video on my phone when I have a nice 60" or better screen in front of me.....I just don't see the use case for this capability....?
Hmm..wondering if you leave the module plugged in, can you then find the antenna it uses and cover it with a faraday cage type unit to prevent its transmissions?

But, that's not MY problem.
I should not have my rights infringed upon, just because some slim minority has mental problems.
I"m getting tired of having to fit everything into the lowest common denominator.
That was the point of my post, I was saying while I'm not in favor of most of what I consider intrusive, oppressive and anti-freedom type European laws and regulations on most things, I'm quite in favor of this type of thing, and with the US lawmakers would put forth some legislation such as Belgium did here.

Take suicides out of the numbers...if someone wants to 'off' themselves, they'll find a way.
And, if you take suicides out of the gun death numbers, you basically now have gun deaths less than car deaths annually.
Since when do you have to show an ID, much less a passport to mail something across borders internationally?
I've never had to do that before either....
Hell, I don't even have a passport, yet I use FedEx to send/receive stuff all the time.
Why are people giving FedEx passport and other info of that nature?
Funny....I've never had to use Apple Music on my Apple Watch, and I listen to music at the gym nearly every morning.
It works for me at a very reasonable price point; I love the company!!!
That's all I'm worried about....
And I thought it was bad enough trying to understand them on support calls......
What are "pot noodles"?
I've not heard that term before....
Yes, but I do think I have a reasonable expectation (especially with plate readers) to not be actively cataloged as to my whereabouts and easily followed daily and logged into systems that can at will re-create my travels and traverses during my days.

If they could now, start removing and dismantling all the plate readers, traffic intersection cameras, etc....that would be nice.
I'm not speaking only specifically for Seattle, but in general across the US.
I"d like a really good sounding BT set up for my office, but I have no need nor want to bug my surroundings with an always on listening device talking to the internet.
