...if they aren'talready doing this. But from what I hear, text compresses fairly well. So... up the Gmail account quotas by compressing the text of the messages and you will have raised the bar yet again. On the fly compression should be a part of all mail filesystems.
...with Slashdot and their quationable banning procedures, I have to say it would be very easy for me to return to life before the internet as long as I have access to my home network and my computers. Now.. cut me off from those resources for about two weeks and I might be a little testy. Considering that all of my hobbies revolve around computers (music, video, web, im, coding, digital photography) it would be kind of hard for me to find something to do that doesn't require a computer. Hell, even my TV viewing is connected to a computer. Screw videotape, give me MPEGs captured from my DirecTV feed. Yup... when I think about it, there is almost nothing that I do that isn't related to computers. I'll bet many of you are the same. The internet can go away for a but take away our computers and you'll have some unhappy geeks on your hands.
"none at all" is exactly how much idea the ape descended parent poster had when he figured it would hurt CD sales. Most HHGTTG fans would give their left nut to own the new shows on CD.;P
...a bunch of jerks who's back should be the first against the wall when the revolution comes!;P
I've had nothing but trouble with Sun. I've learned to cope with Solaris even though it's no where near as nice as HP-UX or (God rest it's soul) Digital Unix/Tru 64. Their support sucks. Their online forums suck compared to the HP forums. And it's damn near impossible to find any kind of Sun community online that is anything like the support from the Linux community. I'll be happy if SUn ever actually dies. Then HP-UX could take it's rightful place as the #1 Unix.
Whore your vote out if you want, I vote for who I want to see run the country, not for who I don't.
Then your vote will NEVER count for anything. I used to think like you because I hate nearly all politicians. But sometimes, when things are so bad, you HAVE to vote to attempt to make a change. Things are THAT bad now. I voted for Nader last election because I foolishly thought like you that Americans were fed up with the incompetent left and the corrupt right. I was wrong. Americans as a whole haven't learned a thing from any of the administrations and are always going to vote for the majority candidate because it's easy to do. What I will say is that at least this time, the country is so strongly and heatedly polarized that it indicated that something different is certainly going on. More than any election within my lifetime.
But think of the cost. Four more years of Bush and there may not be an America worth saving even if a major party incorporates third party views. If Bush wins this election I will always refer to this country as "The Fractured States of Un-America". Spread the meme: vote for Kerry.
The United States "got along" with a lot of people not being able to easily meet the daily needs of life for over 100 years. These days, those daily needs are far more complicated. I also doubt that private security services would be cheaper as it is the nature of the people who run businesses to want to maximize profit while minimizing the quality of their good or service. You could get cheaper service but the quality would be far below what you get from your tax paid policemen now. Or you could get mediocre service that would still be below the current quality for a a break even cost (maybe less) to what you pay in taxes now. If you want something that even approaches what you get from your tax money today, you would have to pay a fortune. You and I both know that only the wealthy would be able to afford this. Look at the breakdown in the quality of private services even now. If it costs less, it's probably crap if it's a for-profit company. If it costs a lot, then it COULD BE a great product if it's from a for-profit company, but can you afford it? Take a look around. I make about $55,000 a year and live in an area with a pretty low cost of living. And I STILL have trouble paying all the bills and having a savings. I'm not interested in making my life worse by making sure that the cost of everything will go up. I'm also not interested in gambling on investments as I really don't like to think about money at all. I just want my trash picked up without having to pay someone to do it. I want to know that I can call the cops and someone will be out to investigate a problem based on the severity of the issue. I want to know that I can drive on decent roads that I don't have to pay a toll on. I want to be able to go to a park and take a walk without having to be a member or pay a yearly fee. What is it with libertarians? They seem to think that going backwards is a good idea.
...issue? Part of the problem with viruses beyond the fact that many OSes still ship with pretty lax security, is the way that PCs are actually implemented when put into a networked environment. The implementation is dictated by the policies of the organization. Too many organizations do not put enough thought into what users should and shouldn't be allowed to do at EVERY level of computer use. Some of this is due to the fact that these organizations can't afford a decent admin due to being underfunded. Another cause is that many of these orgs also think that computers should be a "set it and forget it" kind of thing.
So how can this be addressed? Probably the first thing to do is GET A DECENT ADMIN and IT staff. Since we are talking the BMV here, this means better funding for the BMV to attract a decent admin and IT staff who will demand more pay. Which means... that taxes will have to be increased. Which means that indirectly, the tax payers who vote down county levies are are responsible.
Another thing that can be done once you have a decent admin is to set up a very detailed policy about what users are and aren't allowed to do on a machine. This includes whether or not they can even access external resources on the web (No external web mail during work time, etc...). Regarding the channel of e-mail for mass mailing worms, all mail should be filtered through a virus scanning and spam filtering appliance like the Barracuda Networks Spam Firewall.
If the environment is such that it demands that users be able to access external web resources, a remote application server (with automatic virus protection) running on a separate network should be used for all external web browsing. If they are accessing an internal resource, they can use their local browser. This way if the app server gets hit with some kind of worm or virus, it won't infect their system as the only connection would be over X , RDP or Citrix ICA.
Is all of this a pain in the ass to both implement and live with? Most certainly. Will the users complain? Count on it. Will it buy you a lot more protection against the worms and viruses today? Yes. It's just a question of which environment is more of a pain in the ass for you. One where you are constantly dealing with users that are infecting their machines and taking down the network so that productivity grinds to a halt? Or one where users gripe for a bit about the new restrictions, but you have far fewer or no virus/worm incidents? The choice as they say, is up to the peoplpe with the power to rethink these things.
But what about the typical home user with 20 PCs who wants to share a network connection, host web, mail, im, audio and video streams, vpn for five permanently connected networks and dns as well as just browse the web, use e-mail, and some P2P? For that kind of user (not really that rare) a Linux or BSD routerbox will do just fine thank you.:)
No. Considering how little love MS has for GNU, it would have to be No-nad. Also refers to Bill Gates' state as well as Adolph hitler who was missing a testicle. In fact I suppose you could say Hitler was a case of a monad gonad.
This is the way it will always be unfortunately. Unless the whole population eventually can understand all the technical aspects of computers and the internet, or computers and the internet become so rock solid/secure AND easy to use, it will always be this way.
...with small private companies is that they are typically hotdogs. They tend to *think* they can achieve something but in many cases can't. To do something worthwhile, one of the requirements is to have the power to do it. It's like those small towns that wire up with fiber to each home. Big whoop. They still have T1s feeding their fiber lines or maybe a T3. The fiber is wasted. There is also no real valuable content created within these municipalities, so the fiber isn't used to shuttle vast amounts of data between each home and the city offices. It's just a huge waste of money for bragging rights. The same will go for any small company that does make a "space elevator". They might do it, but it will be damn near useless. It won't get done right unless it's a public works project or some big corporation can profit from it and sets up their own. Mark my words, I don't expect to see this go much farther than the "we're gonna be on the ground floor" stage. Hmmm... actually, that's probably exactly where they willbe and where they will stay: the ground floor.
It's unlikely that public schools are spending the paltry funding they do get on anything other than basic operations. But if you consider that they wouldn't have to spend as much if it weren't for the business overcharging them for goods and services needed to operate a school, they would be able to do more with their money. It all goes back somewhere, and I blame corporate America for every problem regarding the cost of living whether we are talking personal or organizational costs. Some fatcat CEO is sitting somewhere getting fat off of overpriced crap textbooks. That money should have gone to teacher's salaries. If you consider the fact thatnext to medical care, the second most important service for children is education, it's a shame that we don't pay teachers as much as doctors. Right now, the best and brightest minds who are warped into personal gain profit motives are using their minds to rape your wallet instead of educating your kids. We need to make profit less of a motive for doing things and raise intellectual gain to more of a motive for living. Stop encouraging stupid consumers and start encouraging thinkers.
"someone would step in"? THAT'S your idea of a good plan for education? How about this:
If the government didn't pay for law enforcement and everyone was to rely on security services from private companies that you pay for out of pocket. AND those companies charge you a monthly fee that is hard for you to afford... do you want to wait until "someone would step in" to protect you?...thought so.
Industry jargon has it's place. Typically it's important when a concept can't be relayed using general language. Marketing is NOT one of those types of fields. There is little that separates a marketer from say... a secretary. There is no complexity or thought that goes on in the mind of a marketer that can't be transmitted in plain English. Computers, or medicine, sure. But not marketing. Marketing is simple PR which is glorified memo writing that secretaries have done for decades.
OK. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. How would YOU personally propose that a private education system would ensure that EVERY child in this country will get a quality education with no difference in quality regardless of living in a slum or in a gated community? Additionaly, the parent's ability to earn an income should not be a factor in this and every child should be guaranteed the same opportunities for learning from pre-school through college. What is the answer? I don't want you to come back and say that his system *could* do this if given a chance. Education of every American child is too important to gamble with. I'm not saying that the current system is perfect but at the very least most children are given a basic education regardless of their parent's financial status. Private systems cater to people who are financially able. Keep in mind that financially able != good people, just as financially disabled != bad people.
It's not a scam. The guy who scams people on eBay writes everything in italics. This stuff isn't in italics. Same goes for the George W. Bush letters.;P
I get the same reaction every time I hear some libertarian spout off crap. When I saw his take on education, the first question that came to my mind is, "What are you going to do to ensure that EVERY child in this country recieves a nominal education if their parents CAN'T afford private schooling"? I'll be the answer is that it's the parent's responsibility to get rich enough to eduate their kids and it's their fault if they can't provide. That's a pretty stupid view in my opinion.
Shhh!!! Not so loud, or they'll all want me!
