When I first joined Slashdot in 97, a lot of the people here used to be DIYers who actually had a clue about computers and technology. Very few fanboys and the trolls at that time were far more intelligent and creative (GNAA losers can go eat a dick). Unfortunately, since that time Slashdot has slowly degraded into a den of losers who want to identify with so called "geekdom". I'll give you folks a little hint. A true geek is a DIYer. If you can't or haven't achieved that level of grokking computers or technology, then you are not really a classic geek. The only possibly exception is gamer geeks. DIY isn't a necessity in that arena. So... the question about this new O'Reilly mag is: will there be an online version? If so, it might be nice to have forums and journals there so that the last of the geeks can finally jump ship from Slashdot and head over to somewhere better.
...a typical PC being used as a web/mail/firewall box (P200MMX with 32 Megs of RAM) that is on 24/7 with no GUI will not use more than $5.00/month of electricity where I live. (NE Ohio) You can put console on the serial port to avoid needing a monitor. Unless you are getting seriously raped by your utilities (which is a distinct possibility here) you shouldn't need to worry about having a computer on 24/7. Unless $5.00 a month is a problem?
You keep refering to this "hatchet piece" but I've not seen one. What I've seen is an expose of someone who has a pretty shady past. HardOCP did not claim that their piece was the final definiteive answer. In fact I remember them saying something to the effect that they can only conclude the worst. If this was a classic hatchet piece it would have been full of lies and made up "facts" a la Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'Reilly. HardOCP is not guilty of this at all.
People SHOULD have a clue about a quintillion in this day and age. I'll bet that there was a time when a million was out of the mental grasp of most of the population. It's the 21st century and humanity needs to progress as a whole to bigger and better things.
Considering that a secure OS is the purported "holy grail" for MS, how do you suppose they will utilize this technology? Let's think about how they integrated the TCP/IP and the Internet. Initially, they "had a better idea" in the forms of NetBEUI and the MSN service (pre-Internet proprietary service). Eventually they "got religion" and started using TCP/IP (albeit a little funky) and real Internet service instead of prepackaged proprietary content. So... with that history, can we expect MS to say, "pah! Quantum Encryption? We have something better". They roll out their "anti-matter encryption with 1 gigqbit strength" and then they start having problems with crackers starting DoE (denial of existence) attacks on remote computers by causing anti-matter overloads. Several hundred thousand deaths later, they "innovate" their own approach to quantum encryption and "save the day". Of course after that all of reality melts away in a wash of windows logos when a quantum worm gets released and all those entangled quanta fizzle apart the space time continuum. So... did MS create the big bang meta-retroactively?;P
...people are heavily penalized for piracy and thier awareness raised, this kind of effort will not attract much attention. The fact is that Joe Average out there actually believes it's OK to install the copy of Windows XP that came with their laptop on another box because they don't plant to use XP on the laptop. Or, she thinks it's OK to download a game ROM to play on MAME as long as it's deleted in 24 hours. Or he believes that installing and trading warez is OK as long as you don't get caught. All of these people are wrong. I think that if the penalties for doing anything like the above were made much steeper and the enforcement much stricter, then people would really be aware of the problem and would have more understanding of why the betamax situation is important. Unfortunately, their ignorance makes them think that all the warez and "free music" they get from the net and all the illigit software they install falls under the same umbrella as VHS tapes and TV. And since THAT'S always going to be legal, in their minds, there's nothing to worry about. They don't eve "get" the problem. But what do you expect from Joe and Jane AOLer? Things have been moving in this direction for quite some time now. Some people out there believe that everything needs to be done for a fee and they've got hold of the steering wheel right now. This is why it's important to support alternatives that are still free (beer and speech). As long as people like me (those who believe in doing some things for free in both senses) there will always be a way out. This whole betamax thing is just an extension of this battle. We were given the right to copy decades ago and now they want to take that right away so that they can take money for something that was previously free. Peronally, I abide by the rules of these companies. If I want or need software and there is no free alternative, I buy it. If I want to watch a movie, I go to the theater, or rent the video. If I REALLY like it, then I buy the VHS or DVD from a used source. If I like a musician or band, I buy the CD and rip it to Ogg Vorbis for my own personal listening. I do not share what is not mine to share. I respect the wishes of these companies. But... wherever there is a free alternative that is legal and does not go against these businesses, I choose the alternative. This is why I run free OSes at home with only one machine running Windows XP Pro. This is why if you were to compare my Ogg Vorbis collection with every CD I own, you would see that there is not a single Vorbis file that doesn't have a matching disc. If you look through my library of MPEG files, you would see that I own every VHS they were transferred from or they are from sources on the net that are authorized to freely distribute. Our country is in a fucked up state thanks to the greed of the corporate swine. But things will change once Joe and Jane Average see how little they are allowed to do. ONe she sees that she can't listen to her DRM laced audio file on any machine she wants to without having to pay for duplicate licenses... and once he sees that he can only watch the movei he downloaded for five days and needs to pay for another license to watch again... and once they both run into the situation where they can't let their inlaws borrow the new movie over the weekend because it's only authorized to play on their machine. Then, and only then will Joe and Jane Average "get it". Unfortunately for them, it will be too late and there won't be anything they can do about it. Unless they want to unplug and stop watching mainstream stuff. But you and I both know that that will happen when hell freezes over. Instead Joe and Jane will continue to pour THEIR rightfully earned cash into the pockets of uncreative executives who know nothing about creativity or artistry. The only thing Joe and Jane will do is gripe about how expensive life has suddenly become because of all the bills they have to pay. The TV bill, the music service bill, the satellite radio bill, the internet bill, the internet movie rental bill, the TiVO bill, etc... And people like me will be shaking our heads thinking, "we told you so".
Hmmm... you're right. They could ask for "ONE MILLION DOLLARS"! What ever would we do then???
BTW... I am a left leaning, non-partisan American and I would hope for option 3. There is nothing better than talking things through and making compromises. Sure, it doesn't make everyone happy, but then again, neither does scorched earth.
...raise your hands. Now, tell us HOW you think this should be handled:
1. Go over there and nuke them now before they really start causing trouble. 2. Let's reserve judgement until we know for sure it was a nuke. Then if it was, let's go over there and nuke them before they really start causing trouble. 3. Let's reserve judgement until we know for sure it was a nuke. Then if it was, let's hope the current administration will set up talks with North Korea to try and reach some compromises to their demands. 4. OK. So they have nukes. So what? Leave them alone. It's none of our business.
I am certain that we will know your political affiliations based on which answer you relate to the most.
The experience of either man as a junior officer isn't really the point. The question as to whether Bush avoided service due to the power enjoyed by his family's connections and wealth IS one of the issues. Kerry could have avoided his service too. But the fact that he did not, makes him more respectable as a human being. The real issue has to do with abuse of power. Wealth and status should not be allowed to elevate anyone beyond serving their country. Bush simplyillustrates abuse, if the stories are true. And Kerry illustrates honor. It's simple really, once you see what the real target is.
Speaking as a die-hard Star Wars fan from Episode III (1977), there is no way in hell I'm going to buy this travesty! The message needs to be sent loud and clear that NO ONE wants to see these epic masterpieces in altered form! The most obvious problem with these is that they just show how unplanned Lucas was when he conceived of the entire franchise in the 70s. Now he has to go back in and make changes to try and make all the films seem cohesive. What a lamer!!!!
Then there is all that bullshit with Yoda flying around like a greased up pig. For one thing Yoda was OLD!!! So there is no way he could fight that fast because when you're old you move slow! And that little old prune is WICKED old!!!! I mean like 900+ years old!! So there isn't any way that the known laws of physics would allow for a being that old to fly around and fight like that It's just not within the realm of possibility.
Now we also have the whole Backdoor Boys issue in the Phantom Menace. Why they picked one of them to play the teen-aged Anakin is beyond me. For one thing, he can't act (like he couldn't even sing when he had that beard in the Backstreet Boys). The other thing is that they stuck him in the altered version of Return of the Jedi. This completely flies in the face of the known law that has-been vocalists from teeny-bopper bands can't make more than one flop movie. And again, they used CGI to try and get around this. If there is one thing that I personally can't stand, it's when people use CGI to try and change history! Lucas should be hung for that crime.
Now, I don't know this for a fact, but I have it on good authority that the wrist watch in Episode III has been removed also using CGI. To this I have to ask W H Y ????! Is it really that intrinsic to the plot? Oh sure, I know a bunch of you are going to jump down my throat and say that the very fact that the watch is in there disrupts the suspension of disbelief and therefore ruins the movie. To that I say... It's ONLY a movie, don't take it so seriously!!! Besides, I prefer my reality to be unedited with warts and all. Lucas is screwing with reality and history. Someone needs to tell that guy that he isn't god or something!!! So in conclusion I'm saying that I won't be buying this box set and that you shouldn't either. In fact no one should. Make sure to tell all of your neighbors, friends, co-workers and trysting partners not to buy these discs. After all, when the market speaks, Lucas will surely reconsider and release the original versions of the movies. WORST MOVIE BOX SET RELEASE EVAR!!!!
Lemley's distinction also points to the unusual fact that in IP, traditional liberals are often calling for less and less government, while conservatives demand regulation in order to protect their exclusive right to use their intellectual creations.
In general conservatives tend to want to control or own people as long as it benefits business. But liberals are more interested in letting people do what they want as long as it benefits mankind. This is a dichotomy that will probably never be hurdled.

Those that cared, would watch. Those that didn't wouldn't.
Which means that the audience wouldn't change at all. This is fine because those who do watch would be much better informed than they currently are. With the additional info about more candidates than just the Dems and Repugs, then third party candidates may stand a chance.
...if you don't mind stating what your political leanings are, could you explain WHY you align yourself with your chosen stripes? Personally, I'm pretty far to the left even though I hate namby-pamby liberals who are afraid to hurt people's feelings. People pleasers never please anyone. My main reasons for still leaning to the left are that I believe that every human being on the planet should be guaranteed a baseline quality of life that never dips into poverty. The only way that I believe this can be achieved is by making people who are a little more well off support this. Not just "the rich" but at every level. We should all be responsible for each other's well being. It's the right thing to do. We should also work against the natural tendency that everyone has to be greedy. as far as I can tell, the left is much more on my side of thinking than the right. Now... what about you? What do you stand for?
And with that in mind I think it is poor judgment to air the movie prior to the elections.
Hmmm... good idea. We should make sure that Fox News, Limbaugh, Coulter and all the other right-wing loon-a-whacks don't get aired in October at all as well considering how biased they are.
If he wants to air it this month I'd have no problem with it, but too close to the election and you end up with spin wars rather than any fact at all.
Too late. It's already happened. For the last FOUR YEARS.
Remember folks, chuck Bush. He's done nothing for the average intelligent American (a small segment of the U.S. population). If you think he has done something for you, then you are either a fool or you're not the average intelligent American. Vote for Kerry.
I use VNC to good effect for the "goofy full desktop" mode of operation by doing this. It works sell especailly when sent over an SSH tunnel. In fact, I'm doing it right now at work controlling my application server at home.:)
In the past they *COULD* work together because the system actually worked. In these times there is a great deal of doubt as to whether the system works anymore.
Truer words have never been spoken. The right is a bunch of two faced windbags who want things their way. At least the left is willing to really be truly bipartisan and co-operate. However, after four years of lies and tricks, I'm not willing to co-operate with the liars and tricksters. I'm voting against Bush in November. I'm voting for Kerry. Then I'll spend the next four years railing on about how lousy he is in the hopes of getting someone I *really* can get behind elected in 2008.
