My mistake. At some point of time I was looking at a test framework at some point of time and got hold of testmaker which is written in Java.Happened to visit W3C website on the same day.So the mistake. Thanks for the HotJava link though.
Some uses I can think of is embedding sub-parts of it in embedded environments. You also can modify it (Open-source) it for use in hundreds of ways to create useful apps. This most probably is not going to replace any browser on the average desktop, but can possibly be used as a web-test tool, automation framework etc.
What about running a browser/modification on a Netware box (it supports java) and no cross compiler necessary.
Also note that W3C demoes a browser on their website ( Amaya IIRC) written in Java.
It should be assumed that they have a cap on how many songs you can have on your playlist. So you can download 10 songs per day or something like that. Even if the downloads are unlimited, what you would be then doing is no better than what you could do by downloading using Napster-like tools, (and more trouble to run the crack on every song.)And then to top it MS would have your computer ID so they can track you.
$120 for a year
120 bucks a year works to 6 CDs a year . I doubt any music company is going to allow such a scheme to go forward. The catch is that the music industry expects a certain amount of money from a person (or family) per year.Apple is paying that money. And I am sure that if MS is too meet that, it would work out to something around 4 or fve times that. To top it you have to factor in the cost of the player (you probably need a portable, a car sterio and a computer ) which need to be DRM enabled.
And I wonder if I have only 6 songs in my playlist and I have license to have 10, can I share my password with my friend so that he can download those 4?
Maybe it is working for SCO. But for Microsoft it seems like negative to neutral publicity. The google news starts with a story of MS playing hardball (on the frontpage that too) and then about the OSI "tearing down SCO claims " article (linked from/.)
We are not talking about life in general here. We are talking about maths.
Almost all the rich men have become rich late in their lifes. Most politicians are old, artists contibute throughout their lifes, most scietitsts are old, even.
Maths, due to the fact that it demands little interpersonal contacts (books are enough) and because it is almost entirely an act of the mind (unlike physics where you are related to the rules of the world), is generally assumed to be different.Intuition, originality blah, blah.....
Dude can you please post that again in english?
Since I wanted to know if you were trolling or if you were seriously trying to contribute something I looked at your posting history. Most of the posts were either classified as trolls or modded up as funny (though the posts seemed very similar to what you said in the post above).
Since I still have not figured out what you are trying to accomplish I have no other choice but to ask you to repost that in a Language atleast some of us can understand.
No that wont be the topic of the patent filing. In this case mozilla is running on your machine and it is completing the form with data on your machine.
The patent seems to cover data being sent from server to client for autocompletion. For example on my phone I type "po" and then the based on the keystrokes the server searches the database and fills in the rest (Kinda useful when u only have 10 keys). Any prior art would be found I think in the PDA,cell phone market.(What does DoCoMo think?) Or some really fancy HTML/Script combos.
IANAL!IANAL!!
On the other hand if they don't settle on a standard (ie it does not get approved by Hollywood ), then we might have a product with no built in copyright support, no overhead on prices of a standard etc. We might have to wait a little for an interchangeable format on that (like CDs now, Joliet,Romeo this and that) , but we might finally have a large capacity storage optical storage media actually designed for computers (not music players and appliances). All your data might then be finally yours
Somebody notice that while most of the "good" movies are well balanced and sticks to the plot of the article, the most succesful ones had an overdose of one element or another or were missing one of those? (Well except Titanic that is)
I believe that even if you hava a really good handwriting-reco algo, the keyboard might still be better for some stuff. Keyboard gives you the use of two hands while stylus restricts you to one, moreover you cannot use more than tow fingers on that hand for clicking. It is similar to using a mouse.Humans have trained themselves to use their hands to write with a pen so it just happens that you can write with a stylus almost as fast. The ideal input device would be something which has a notebook keyboard, but with a "mouse-equivalent" which lets you write really fast.
Though I personally think that the article-author guy hated maths and so dropped out of CS and took up painting courses, and now he wants to be accepted as having the right "attitude" , I think I'll be a double troll. Here goes
Mathematicians and "hackers" do create stuff which have almost no obvious functional value.Eg. A quine (a code when compiled and run prints the code listing out) has no "functional" value (though it is a big thing in Theoretical CS). Or look at the obfuscated C code contest webpage.
I think what the articles main point is that the painters get millions(although mainly posthumously) for making stuff which does nothing except be so confusing (or beautiful if u want) to be called "art", the guys who writes code which has no functional value dont get paid. He wants colleges to have courses in "Computer art" where all these can be taught and probably the guys who does this to be respected
IMHO lot of maths (with which the article has a problem) is similar, almost has no functional value (Reading "man who knew infinity" might be a good source of examples of stuff which some guy called Ramanujan proved which were nearly impossibly complicated but had almost no meaning in real life). Its just that mathematicians hate being called artists.
Lets not jump to conclusions, all we got is a preview, not a review
Assume this: Microsoft leaves the basic architecture unchanged, except for a few minor tweaks. Then it puts in a setup which allows only windows to run on it ala XBox. Also add in DRM-kind-of-things such that only certified code will run (no more viruses). All code that runs on the box must be "MS certified".
An avrg. user gets all he had before + less trouble with viruses, less programs which breaks when he runs it.
It is the fringe guys who like to code, tinker and do stuff which are different who suffer. Anyway what percentage of computer users code nowadays?
From the article: Roger Ames, Warner Music Group's chairman and CEO. "Apple has shown music fans, artists and the music industry as a whole that there really is a successful and easy way of legally distributing music over the Internet."
Seems like they are getting it finally. i wonder if apple is really successful the music industry will go like "hey, why give Apple thos 15 cents a song" we can sell songs on our own!!" . Too bad they dint learn this long ago while fighting napster
Remember that Bruce did not send a petition to anybody claiming he was a representative. What he did is that he posted a comment about somebody posing as a representative on his webpage
In that sense all he did is same as what the parent poster (patman) did while he made the comment. He gave a disagreeing comment. If Bruce sent in a counter-petition then he probably is (indirectly) claiming to be something. All bruce says he wants is that a representative should atleast notify the Opensource/Free mailing lists.Seems reasonable.
They run kernel 2.4.20, and hava their download page here
Doesnt look like a free download though.
Moreover it doesnt look like they even run their own repository from this comment in their forums (scroll down a bit).
Looks like a Debian with slightly newer packages and for which you have to pay.
From the article Consider two drawings, originally designed by psychologist Wolfgang Köhler. One looks like an inkblot and the other, a jagged piece of shattered glass. When we ask, "Which of these is a 'bouba,' and which is a 'kiki'?" 98 percent of people pick the inkblot as a bouba and the other one as a kiki. Perhaps that is because the gentle curves of the amoebalike figure metaphorically mimic the gentle undulations of the sound "bouba" as represented in the hearing centers in the brain as well as the gradual inflection of the lips as they produce the curved "boo-baa" sound. In contrast, the waveform of the sound "kiki" and the sharp inflection of the tongue on the palate mimic the sudden changes in the jagged visual shape. The only thing these two kiki features have in common is the abstract property of jaggedness that is extracted somewhere in the vicinity of the TPO, probably in the angular gyrus
German language is rather guttural and so is arabic... Does this mean that they necessarily percieve the world a as a sharp not so friendly place? And chinese and italians should really love it , the languages have no sharp edges at all!!
The comment was supposed to be funny.I have nothing against Germans, Arabs,Chinese or Italians or for that matter against member of any country .
DVDs are not just an extended CD technology.Copy protection is built into the standard. And Hollywood sort of decided the standard.
Which is why DVD-R are not an easy thing.

Maybe becasue of art patents/copyrights ?

Is this really different from saying LindowsPC does not allow you to compile and run a Sparc version of the Linux kernel?
If you bought the box, you bought the box.You are given the source for the OS you bought. You change it, nobody is obligated to ensure it runs.
Easier to think in terms of hardware-software interactions and software-GPLed Software interactions.
