Not too sure but looks like a preprint of the thing
Getting the script working is easy to explain - You can assume that humans are designed to feel good when they do good work because good work == good reward == good food/chances of screwing etc. How evolution decided that writing good script == chances of sscrewing is beyond me, but it must be true, call it a quirk of evolution
Also the esthetic pleasures thing again must be because for some reason/No reason it might have been decided that people who do things which do not have a direct meaning, but have only intellectual stimulation as a goal are somehow cleverer and hence have a better chance of survival. That probably can explain poems. We are revelling in the experience of a fellow human being, somehow gaining something from reading a poem
I never managed to explain the enjoyment in songs, maybe something to do with memories of nature? Flute== birds, stringed instruments==water falling!!! ? Also the metallic guitar which sounds like a machine might be associated with powerful machine?
Yeah , all of this is pure conjecture, Im just trying to explain a world I do not understand.ButI believe there must be a reason for everything in the scheme of evolution, something that helps us survive. I'mm just stretching a theory to try and validate a possibility

There is no ultimate goal, evolution does'nt plan ahead.
The reason why we feel an urge to procreate is because all the animals that did'nt feel like procreating died out and only the ones that did were left over to pass on their genes.
Consider it an axiom of existence if you like, everything else we want are derived from it (Freud), in the sense that you feel good when you see a nice girl becasue there is a chance you'll get to screw her, and then pass on your genes. You feel happy when you see food bcause eating sustains your life (genes) for a day more...
The question is, if I make a program which is intelligent except for a line which says "yuour aim is to serve humans" at the top (axiom) can I still consider it sentient? Or what if somebody modifies it to say "reproduce" and it turns to an intelligent virus?
From the article The only complaint I really can think of through this whole experience is that some of the applications didn't work. You would launch them from the K menu and nothing would happen.
Saw the samething with RH9.Try a simple KscreenShot->Save on RH9. While it was expected with RH and their Bluecurve, whats wrong with Suse? Also the test machine seems to have been an AMD, while I believe most distros put in a Intel optimised Kernel (atleast RH does) and the author mentions that it runs slower than a source distro.Shouldnt he have recompiled the kernel ideally>
It's funny how all dists seem to come with new versions at the same time.
I believe its tbe kernel. SuSe's latest distro uses 2.4.20 kernel. Redhat is pretty much at the same place with RH 9. Whenever a new kernel comes along and breaks a binary compatibility with the previous versions, a new whole number comes out. A new UI, applciation etc. makes a point release.Since all the distros use pretty much the same apps, synchro. releases are to be expected. Note that Debian and Gentoo don't play along.
No not really, all this means is that Linux gets a cheap, subsidised my MS platform to run on.
Should see the game being pulled out of the market soon, making XBox hacking illegal again

What about the reverse , can I get money , for my reputation?
Then I'll encash all my Karma before this post gets modded down and destroys it all.....
72 billion to fight the war (bush has made a request for so much from the senate) and 8 billion for food/aid/medicine/rebuilding the whole nation. Somehow seems odd that 9 times the money is being to spend bomb the country than to rebuild it...
Why is it that both these debut outside the US? One is in Japan the other in Korea
t68i came out in Asia and Europe.
Is US not gadget crazy enough? Or is it the service provider monopolies in US affetcting manufacturers?
Y I learnt in school that refractive index = (1-v^2/c^2)^0.5. Which means that if refractive index is negative then speed of light is exceeded in the material , ummm.. no the square root of a number is negative.... ????
A bit of googling brought this out , which says that the rule of thumb I used is incorrect in "metamaterials".Ahh.. releif
Don't really get your hopes high.
This happened in Japan and i-Mode is a telephone service for which customers pay for receiving mail, ie not a free service. Note that the judge based the fine on possible revenue losses and not on howmuch docomo actually spent per invalid email (apparently 1.2 yen/mail). So aa similar ruling will leave out free fonemail services, let alone free webbased mail services. IANAL!IANAL!!
And looks like the thinkgeek guys have a patent on this
What is slashdot trying to do advertising a product which breaks a patent held by an affiliate?
. A method in a computer system for allocating display space on a web page, the method comprising: receiving multiple bids indicating a bid amount and an advertisement; receiving a request to provide the web page to a user; selecting, based at least in part on review of bid amounts, a received bid; and adding the advertisement of the selected bid to the web page. 24. A method in a computer system for selecting an advertisement to present to a user, the method comprising: identifying an advertisement for an item to be presented to the user; when an advertisement for a related item has previously been presented to the user, analyzing activity of the user associated with the advertisement for the related item; and when the analysis indicates that the user may not be interested in the item of the identified advertisement, identifying an advertisement for another item.
Covers most of advertising on auction sites and targeted advertising methinks.

Don't get all humpy about the box. Remember the simputer? Never really took off. A friend off mine has it, and works too slow. (dirt cheap tho). Here again we have a link to a website which says someone has a box which can do everything except wash dishes. No hardware info, No techspecs except a lot of acronyms, and most importantly no pricing info,
If this thing works at all, I think it must be in beta phase of implementation (the site claims the box alone has been beta teseted). Don't expect it within the next 2-3 years.
It looks like the Govt. is not only buying up bandwidth, but also commercial satellite photography services.
I don't htink USA has any shortage of imaging tech., most probably trying to stop Saddam from buying the images
How are they going to stop bin Laden tho. , how long can they monopolize commercial satellites?
Power App is a server, not a "Consumer box". Dell still sells boxes with RH preinstalled. Even better all Servers are fully supported by RH distros . ie dont buy with Linux preinstalled, buy with PCDOS and put in Linux, works perfectly
Dell has taken out support for preinstalled Linux from their portables, desktops etc. so you cant avoid the M$ tax.
Have a look at the Dell magazine for Feb. Cant find the word Microsoft anywhere. THough you cant find linux anywhere in the May issue.http://www.dell.com/us/en/esg/topics/power_p ower.htm

Good that we can, too, or most of the slashdot community would be pretty unhappy :-P
No doubt!!!

They have released the Gold (or RC2) for RH 9 for companies to test. Got my hands on one of those....

Wonder if I can throw my harddisks then?
I'll never turn my box off, and will run linux on it (no reboots) and i shall have a damn fast box.
Did you notice that a lot of KDE apps are broken? For example Kscreenshot can't save a screenshot etc.?
