  1. No reason not to use it on Don't Eat The White Snow Either · · Score: 2, Insightful

All water at some point has to go through a water purification process. If you can drink water from the Amazon jungle after boiling it for 1/2 hour and/or using a few iodine tablets,

Skiing on this snow shouldn't be a problem. Its not like you have to drink/eat the stuff. Urine is not hard to purify, there are much worse and much harder things to purify. I suppose there is a small psychological barrier to skiing on it at first.

If you're so paranoid about skiing on sanitized snow then I should mention you shouldn't taste your own sweat - it's 1 to 2 % urine. Another liitle known fact you probably didn't want to know ;)

  2. Re:other issues... on Why Project Gutenberg Isn't There Yet · · Score: 2, Insightful

If you can publish a Poe compilation in 50,000+ prints, sell them all in a few years, reprint and repeat. Make a lot of money, no royalty payments and charge $20 a copy then they'll keep making it.

And this is where PG is having volunteer problems. The old books still make publishers money so their pre-press electronic versions won't be made available for free. So the process of OCR'ng the text at no cost is painstaking, labour intensive and a limited readership. What motivation!

Calling it ' next-generation secure computing base' is a great way of hiding Palladium as a feature on the box of the next Windows. Say I was going to retail to pick up MS Windows' next version. On the box there is either listed in the features which would look more appeasing to consumers?

    1) 'next-generation secure computing base'
    2) Palladium

From the article "To address the criticism, the company has decided to release the source code of the core part of the software, known as the nub or nexus, so that others can verify it is secure and is doing only what the company has claimed."

  5. Why are some people upgrading so frequently? on The Costs of Making a DRAM Chip · · Score: 1

This isn't about wether X pollutes more than making computer chips. I reason that its more important to stop coming out w/ a 800 MHz, 1000 Mhz, etc processors every few months and changing the Ram every 6 months for a minute change in benchmarks. Of course companies are seeking better profit margins and increased sales so limiting upgrade cycles for them is counter-productive.

If people didn't throw out old systems so quickly, companies would change upgrade cycles and we could find ways to recycle old computers ( literally, not giving to charity ) we wouldn't have this mess. Our landfills, in 2 years are going to be full of perfectly functional PIIs, PIIIs and Athlons and the arsenic and mercury will seep into the water supply.

My computer is 3 years old. Still works well and I'm happy w/ it. Only upgrade I'll make is with HDs since I'm sure they're about to crash sooner or later.

    Of course, I'm an optimist.

As for an answer to #1 question, fiscal quarter or end of year doesn't matter to me. Sonner she's gone, the more there is hope. Perhpas they will find someone w/ more high-tec/Internet savy

    Side notes:

Maybe she could work for Eminem. Any cut down on piracy on his albums == less listeners would be great!

  7. We need more like this on the Net on Wikipedia Reaches 100,000th Article · · Score: 1

I love the fact that Wikipedia exists and shows the real strength of collaborative work on the internet. Project Gutenburg and the archives on Ibiblio also come to mind as great resources on the net.

We should try and have more of these sites mirrored on the Net, IMO. I live in Canada and I don't see why we can't have gov't sponsor mirrors of such information sources. as it would benefit everyone. I'm all for public libraries but this stuff is right at your fingertips and is handy for quick information and its cheaper to run.

  8. Some thoughts on Bad News From Canada On NetTV And Media Levies · · Score: 2, Interesting

I objected to the levy by sending a letter to the CPCC. There was a mailing list sent to objectors, to those who included an e-mail address, during the hearings. In it, a formal objector had stated that music industry executive had released its sales figures behind closed doors which should, as part of the hearings, be made publicly available. This has not been the case. If we are to object, it is only fair to see these figures and statistics if the purpose of these discussions is to hear and rebutt each side's arguments.

Why don't Apple and Creative among others help join in the fight? Apple, for example, could sell an iPOD w/o a hard drive. The media player now would not include the hard drive. Then they could sell separately a similar hard drive for data storage which would happen to work w/ the iPOD.

Complain to your MPPs. Boycott companies which belong to the RIAA. Buy music only from used record stores. Import you own CD-Rs.

The money collected from the levy's for over three years now has yet to be distributed to artist. To date some $20 Million has been collected. If the purpose of the levys is to compensate artists, where is the money going to go?

  9. Has anyone here actually ridden one? on Segway Banned In San Francisco · · Score: 1

Has anyone here actually ridden one or is it only city officials and those who designed the product? If these things would reduce traffic in citys ( bus and automobile ) it would far outweigh the saftey concerns. Pollution, dependence on the automobile, etc. Rolleblades are far more dangerouse since there's not much stopping power. Can't afford the Segway or a car? Walk. Its exercise, is rather safe and intuitive and doesn't cause pollution.

  10. Teach non-techies to wipe their drives on Second Hand Hard Discs Reveal Secrets · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think time has arrived for techices to tell the general public and the companies they work for to wipe their drives before disposing or giving them away. People should be told to encrypt sensitive info and wipe drives. Heck, it should even come w/ the computer manuals IMO with the necessary software.

I think it just goes to show how much people depend on their computers for too many things. Only a matter of 10 years ago, people had financial information, documents, addresses and contacts and any other personal information under lock and key in a filing cabintet.

As long as someone doesn't snoop through their garbage bags, someone would probably not want to go to the local garbage dump to get personal information. Now many simply give old, working hard drives to charitable organizations or friends w/o even reformatting them. In the age of identity theft, I think its safe to say that most in the general public shred paper documents before disposal.

To me, this is like a cardiac surgeron simply stating "Heart transplants always work because I did my first transplant today." This idiot's reasoning is the same thing. Linux works and X has a Windows like interface. Gimp works in Windows so its easy to port Linux apps to Windows. Liunx is stable, Windows isn't. Let's port Linux to Windows. No research, credentials, references are used to back up his claim. Yet he's being /.'ed and getting media attention. Hope Darwin's theory works soon rather than later.

  15. The copyrights and recording Cartel on European Copyrights Expire; RIAA Nervous · · Score: 1

Extending copyrights upto 160 years ( as one poster illustrated ) is unfair. If the copyright has already been extended by 20 years, what prevents Disney from going back to court and asking for another extension. "20 years wasn't enough....we need another 20 years." By that time something better than Mickey Mouse will have been created and well have forgotten about Mickey. The RIAA is more afraid of Napster and clones, not only because people can download songs for free but the fact its starts a new digital distribution medium. Many artists, including a few well known on big labels ( ie Sloan ) have recorded & produced w/ a computer in their own homes. The RIAA can't control this and when better payment methods can be assured through the Internet the RIAA will have lost control, sinking the big labels.

  17. Question is not will it last long on Has the Quality of Consumer Electronics Declined? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm all for buying quality electronics, avoiding the cheap stuff altogether. Given recent market trends, long term use in consumer electronics is unfortunately probably a non-issue for most manufacturers as standards continuosly change. The CD player I bought five years ago will probably be out of date in 15 years. A newer, and supposedly better format will be out by then. I've invested a lot in CD's and I'll probably buy a really good quality player before the newer standards come out. Come to think of it, I probably sound like my parents holding onto the record players, 8-tracks... Of course w/ a new standard the cost of the older music will be inflated artificially.

I download music on a regular basis. When I really like the album I always buy it. In fact, I just bought three last week after listening to the albums. Unfortunately, as some of you probably realise, its hard to find little known artists or artists who are more popular overseas than in the US. I ended up purchasing 2 albums from european artists and it cost me $25 (Can) vs $15 for most other CD's. Pricey, but well worth it.

At times I would just download songs I've already purchased since it was quicker to download them then to convert them in the computer for my MP3 player.

  19. Non-productive time on MSNBC: Offices Remain Spam Free Zones · · Score: 1

Why should anyone have to deal with any SPAM? We've all collectively wasted a lot of time on filtering it - wether at home or at work. Although, we can't prevent viruses and system intrusions, we should at least more easily be able to control SPAM.

What happened to the legislation in some states to punish spammers? Why are some providers doing little to stop this problem? At issue in my mind, is not the fact that sys admins have done a great job filtering SPAM (which is a positive), it's the fact that everyone has to put up with it and simply bouncing it does nothing to diminish the quantity.

I've seen a few threads on other sites (sorry, I wouldn't want them to get /. There have only been at most a few hundred replys and, truthfully, I don't think the $100 Grand plus the former developers are estimating it will cost will not be met. My alternative: Ask the Open Source community (that's right, you /. 'ers ) to donate $5 - $10 through a PayPal system, for example, that as yet not been organised.

The benefit: Another production quality Office Suite portable across many operating systems, a small code base and binary, enough features for most everyone and a spreadsheet and other office apps integrated in one. As limited as the speadsheet and presentation might be, I'm sure it will meet the needs of corporations, students and home users throughout.

As an aside: With quite a few popular Open Source office suites, why not standardise on one file format? It would have the added benefit of everyone being able to share files across different office applications with ease. I would hope that wether or not Gobe is GPL'D, a standard file format should be created.

If Ralsky operates from his home in Oakland, regarless if the SPAM is directed through China I would think the simple fact that the SPAM goes though and returns to US backbones and its eventual delivery to US e-mail boxes, isn't his SPAM illegal. Why not take this guy to small claims court, or better yet launch a lawsuit against him representing every internet user in California. Rack this guy up in debt and take him out of business permanently. You'll do us all a favor.
