    So you detonate a bomb in the security line at an airport the day before Thanksgiving. If you want to kill a bunch of people with a bomb, there are plenty of ways of doing that.

    DVD region locking only matters with CSS, which is only found on DVD movies, and has nothing to do with a DVD-r, or any kind of burned disc.

    I think what the GP meant was that you have more bits per symbol (or memory cell), then you would double the capacity.
    A similar thing is why the Baud rate isn't equal to the bit rate on 56.7K modems.

    In what way is DRM good?
    All DRM tries to do is prevent the user from doing stuff, but can't possibly be successful due to the analog hole.

    Ok, so the DRM isn't as intrusive as Gutmann said, but it is still there, and intrudes when you play back "premium content", right? (Thanks for those informative links, I am not going to buy a Vista computer, so I haven't really been following that stuff)

    And how do you know that the Reduced functionality mode is actually gone?

    I don't have a single device that uses HDCP.
    Not my Upconverting DVD player, my PS2, or any of my linux devices/computers.

    Maybe I am pissed at the whole industry, then. I am not going to get a Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player until Helios Labs makes one without the DRM.

    Unless they removed the Digital Restrictions Management from the core of the OS, they couldn't have improved it that much.

    It is still Defective by Design.

    As always, the hardware became commodity while the new and valuable changes occur in software.


    And that would be why the x86 architecture has lasted for as long as it has.
    But, the AMD64 architecture is here, creating a gradual changeover from x86.

    Easy: I rarely do stuff with my real name on the Internet.
    (Hint: my name isn't corsec67)

    If I don't want someone to find out the name I go by for most of my online stuff, I just don't give them my username.

    Doing a google search for my real name comes up with my thesis and a patent, both of which are me, and not a whole lot else.

    If you want more reliable WLAN, I would suggest loading the Tomato firmware onto a WRT-54GL, which is the most reliable wifi setup I have found.

    Why do websites have to paginate stories? The scroll bar is there for a reason, why not let it do its thing? It is really annoying when I can read the sentence or paragraph you put on each page faster than it can load.

    I think a story or article should only be split into different pages when it is big enough to have different chapters. Since almost all news articles are way to short to have chapters, why try to split them up in an annoying way?

    Whoops, you are right there. But still, unless the IO system is maxed out, or the CPU is pegged, the DVD playback shouldn't skip, even if the network is allowed to do more packets per second.
    Yes, getting skipless playback of audio is a good thing, but if it wasn't a problem in XP, why should it be changed in Vista, which is made to run on faster computers?

    Pretty much *any* software you are going to teach in school is going to be obsolete by the time they are "in the workforce", so it would be better to teach concepts as opposed to steps to follow. Teach them how to learn, not how to memorize, and they will get much further.

    Yeah, another vote for "I hate it when people mess up metric prefixes." When you are talking about 1,000 or more of a kilometer, you should bump that up to a megameter. It doesn't matter if you round or not, but significant figures should be accounted for.

    Same thing for 1,000 kilowatt-hours, that is 1 megawatt hour.

    No, it is because when audio is playing, the network is limited to 6000 packets per second, regardless of the cpu usage.

    Yeah, "get tough on crime" by fucking up the lives of other people. They both are now "sex offenders", and even if the list does give particulars about their crimes, they were sending pictures of people under 18 in sexual positions. And NO "sex offenders" list is ever going to say "oh yeah, they were sending pictures of themselves".

    Just like the drug war and every other war on the people, the cure makes the problem FAR worse.
