  1. My OS of choice depends on the task at hand on What Keeps You On (or Off) Windows in 2013? · · Score: 1

In my house right now I have a NAS which runs a custom Linux install, a Media PC which runs XbmcBuntu, an Android tablet with CM10.1, 2 laptops with Windows 7 and 2 desktops with Windows 7. I generally prefer to use Linux for any device that has a dedicated task where the hardware won't change. I prefer Windows on laptops though due to ACPI as generally it just works better on some of the odd chipsets used. I like Windows on a desktop for a few specific apps and for gaming. Yes I could use a combination of Steam for Linux and Wine to play games but there is a small performance penality in Wine and compatibility issues still. My current plans are to stick with Windows 7 SP1 on my home desktops/laptops until it is no longer supported as I have a burning hatred for Windows 8's Modern UI. Once Windows 7 SP1 is no longer supported I will see what each platform (OS X, Windows and Linux) have to offer and decide what to do from there. If I had to switch tomorrow? I'd probably put Debian on all of my devices.

  2. I think what they're really saying is..... on Google Delays General Release of Honeycomb Source · · Score: 1

In order to make their deadlines I feel they basically used some very sloppy and undocumented code. As a result they are now going through and polishing up the code, fixing bugs and improving it to work without all sorts of crazy hacks. Why do I feel this is the real reason? Well look at all the stability issues reported for Android on the Xoom. Many people claimed to experience multiple lockups per day with the initial 3.0 release of Honeycomb. Now 3.0.1 is out and while said to be better is still lacking a lot of polish and as some reviews put it "We feel like we are using a pre-production device". If I had to guess? I'd say by the time 3.1 comes out we will see the source code hit AOSP. While I do disagree with Google on their decision to delay the source code release, I am hoping it isn't a long delay.

I highly respect Matt Stone and Trey Parker for doing what they do. I don't always agree with what their shows message is, but I still can usually find humor in it. They make fun of everyone and have said in their own show that its either all ok to be made fun of or none of it is. If you are offended? Don't watch it, it takes a while 2 seconds to change the channel. We as Americans have the right to freedom of speech, not freedom as long it is doesn't offend someone. Personally, I hope to see South Park not only show Muhammad in tonights episode, but also make fun of Revolution Muslim and its' creators.

I was in molten core last night on bleeding hollow and the server crashed 3x on us while we were in there. I was in the AV battleground and it was impossible to caputure a graveyard because the BG was bugged. Will these simple issues ever be fixed? 2) the druid class is the lowest damage class in the entire game by a long shot. We have 1 good talent tree (restoration), 1 alright talent tree (balance) and 1 terrible talent tree (feral). We also have issues with our damage scaling as better and better end games items appear. Even with the posted buffs for our cat form, it still dies in a few hits and has no added chance to dodge or any in combat stuns to make it able to survive even a little more. When will this class be fixed properly? 3) Lots of people are getting bored because of the lack of new content, myself included. 1.7 will finally offer a new instance to go to but there is still a lack of new content thats needs to be addressed. Why not release 2 or 3 new dungons rather than just one at a time. 4) When will there be new graphical features such as weather effects added?

  6. What about competition? on Java 1.5 vs C# · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well people are here now saying oh java is better and people are saying that c# is better. In my opinion both are good and just like competition should do (assuming MS plays by the rules this time) both products will end up the better because of it. For the longest time java had no real competition (in my opinion) and its development slowed down greatly but now that C# is starting to be used more and more often javas development has finally started to take off again. Nothing but good can come from this so rather than flame each other over this I think we should simply consider what features might improve either language and attempt to talk to communicate with the developers when possible to request these features and improve competition all around.

  7. My Gnome 2.8.0 experience on GNOME 2.8 Released · · Score: 3, Interesting

Well ive been running the 2.7.x devel series and I gotta say gnome keeps getting faster and better in my opinion. HAL is amazing and I think that it really will make a nice environment for new linux users to take advantage of. I for one though am very pleased with this release. Instead of trying to do a ton of new features they instead only made a few new features and spent a lot of time on fixing bugs and doing little touches. Even during the code freeze I saw several bug fixes get pushed for outstanding issues in nautilus and eel2 which will make a better user experience. There were a few things I wish that they did do such as work on the menu code, and also to switch over to firefox as the default browser but mayde this will happen for 2.10. On a seperate note one thing that really disapointed me is that gtk2.6.0 isn't released yet. They did a few nice performance improvements in the 2.5.x devel series, specifically with screen window resizing, so as soon as its released I recomend giving it a shot with gnome 2.8 and then post your comments on the performance of gnome.

There is already a LSB v1.1 which has been created and it is included with redhat/fedora and several other distros which I can't remember off the top of my head. I know for a fact though debian is choosing not to adopt it. The main reason it is a challenge to adhere to these standards is that they have been doing things their own way for so long that it is a lot of work to change things. A prime example is rpms...several distros use rpms but due to package names and dependancies it can sometimes be almost impossible to install a fedora rpm on say suse. That is one of the problems with open software is that many users have different thoughts and opinions on how to do things. Personally I use fedora though and all the software I try and run and install works fine and I never have any problems with it.

Well it appears that you haven't ever heard of the Linux Standard Base project which can be found at http://www.linuxbase.org/ The goal of this project is to set a standard base for linux distros. Several of the major linux distros are members of this and try to adhear to its standards. There is also http://www.freedesktop.org which is working on standards for the desktop to make it easier to write programs for linux. Before you go on a rant and rave you should definantly do your research.

Im guessing DMA is disabled by default on your machine. If you recieve a very poor score then you can try this hdparm -c1d1 /dev/hdx then run hdparm and see if it runs faster. if it does then you know your problem and you can add your /etc/rc.sysinit and place that line in there somewhere after your root partition is mounted.

This isn't just about the license change. Its about creating an open environment for the development of X. While XFree86 made a good product there were very closed to new ideas and adding new developers. Xorg is being open and trying to make this a community driven project and I have nothing but the highest respect for these people. So you might not care about whether the license will change or not but if it does and you set up a nice new linux machine and suddenly only have xffm installed because no other guis can be packaged with it because of license issues I have a feeling your gonna be kinda ticked.

I am personally very glad to see these updates as it will offer a better product to the end user. I am looking foward to their second release and currently running their latest release.

I simply had to reinstall my nvidia drivers, which work fine for everyone out there worried they won't work, and it runs fine. I for one am glad they are making this transition. It is time that X be open and maintained by a community with bugzilla. As more and more patches are sent and applied more companies may produce patches for their hardware since they are actually being accepted. This in my opinion is going to do nothing but help and improve a users experience with linux.
