  1. Re:Here's the likely scenario on Open Source a National Security Threat · · Score: 1

Keep in mind, in the defense industry, programmers/code reviewers are often under the pressure of some 4-star general, the colonel reporting to him, the government lead reporting to him, the boss reporting to him, and the project manager reporting to the boss, all who want a deadline of "yesterday" met to save their asses. Good luck trying to fish out bugs in any software in that window. I guess this argument supports closed-source more. Anyone know if it's common practice anywhere in defense for a third party to check over code? That's probably the answer to open-source.

Some basic tips that not enough people know, in no particular order:

    1. Make sure you have a firewall configured to allow incoming connections from only ports you need open. You might be able to do just fine with no incoming connections allowed at all.
    2. Have an updated virus checker.. Norton or Mcafee. By updated, I mean having it auto-update for you. Have it check every file accessed on media accessed by the computer, and email. At the very least, all the incoming media and email should be scanned on the fly, but outgoing is a good idea too.
    3. Use Spybot or Ad Aware at least once a month to scan for spyware. Also keep these updated. I forget if they auto-update, but just be sure it checks for updates before you run them.
    4. Only use credit cards that keep you free of liability for any fraud.
    5. Buy a separate unnetworked little organizer with a keyboard to store hints to remember your passwords. Don't store the actual password.
    6. Cancel credit cards you don't use.
    7. Photocopy the backs and fronts of all the credit/debit cards you use and whatever else you keep in your wallet. Write in the customer service phone numbers if they're not clear.
    8. Have Windows auto-update and auto-install all critical patches, or keep your Linux distro updated.
    9. Don't open email attachments that you have no reason to trust, and certainly not until you have antivirus software checking incoming emails.

You know what Google needs? A "Was this result helpful in your search?" button for each link returned, so that the search itself also influences page ranks. Maybe that will help get rid of this Google bombing mess.

I think the only way for that to work is to charge something like $5 a year per Google user account. Otherwise, soon Google would have to start dealing with scripting that searches for certain web sites and chooses "Yes, this link is useful!" thousands of times per second. Then maybe you can try to restrict it by IP address, but the scripts would turn into some sort of trojan that makes other people do the same thing. Then you'd have them identify some sort of letters/numbers in graphics, which I remember seeing a previous Slashdot story about scripters having a way around as well...etc, etc.

  13. Alton's cause on The Thermochemical Joy of Cooking · · Score: 3, Interesting

Well, Alton's certainly not training master artists that you'd find in a 4 star restaurant last I checked, but he knows what he's talking about in terms of food. To be a chef, from my experience.. I'm an amateur ... you first need to be a scientist. The art of cooking comes afterwards. If your bread doesn't rise, that's a piece of garbage, not your distinctive style of bread.

Also, Alton knows a whole lot about how to make the cooking experience more enjoyable so you can worry about the art more than the science. The best way to thaw a chicken.. put it in a bowl with barely running cold water spilling into it, rather than having it sit in the oven. See, now I can worry more about what seasoning to choose instead!

  20. I wonder if Yahoo is going to wake up on Gmail Users Get A Storage Boost [updated] · · Score: 2, Informative

GMail offering 1GB for free is nice, and with ignorable ads, I'm tempted to switch to them, obviously. Right now I'm a paying Yahoo Mail customer, and I look at the prices they charge even now.. 100MB for $59.99.. So Yahoo claims they'll offer 100MB for free and "virtually unlimited" for paying customers. Well, a big reason I went for Yahoo is because I have a highly configured personalized Yahoo homepage and wanted to integrate my mail smoothly into it. However, if anyone's tried putting the "Yahoo Mail Preview" into their Yahoo home page, they'll be dismayed to learn that it usually does not display correctly, and "times out" or whatever.

So I ended up removing it from my homepage, and now Yahoo's on equal footing again. Paying for ad free email is worth it, and the address guard service is nice (disposable email addresses), but Yahoo will sure look bad offering only one tenth the storage of what the competition offers. Yahoo claims they're not going to take it sitting down though, so I'm looking forward to seeing capitalism give me a nice deal from one of them.
