Doesn't this also effectively cripple the vista box in question
from being a multimedia box. Microsoft itself has that SOHO
NAS OS that they were pitching too, hell even connecting to
MS's own win 2k3 server and streaming music or videos
from an external source is hobbled by the cap. Which is
receive only ??!!!
Maybe I'm not in the norm yet, but I've been using
NAS and remote servers with RAID5 arrays for years and
having smaller lightweight machines for playback and such.
It's no wonder only a few months (might have been one or two),
that MS announced the new successor to Vista. That's just
nuts.
I know there are two or more camps when it comes to raid and all,
but there are a few stand alone NAS boxes that WILL allow you to
swap out drives (one at a time) for bigger drives and it expands
the raid volume size.
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/content/view/29616/ 75/
is one such one.
I agree with lathama on the above and would like to add to the networking
and hardware layer parts. It doesn't matter if it's Asterisk, Cisco, Nortel
or the garden variety VoIP and it doesn't matter how big your pipes are,
you're ultimatly going to need to implement some sort of QoS to protect
the jitter/latency sensitive VoIP traffic. This being said, your network
infrastructure will have to support QoS both tagging and trusting.
Calculating number of calls that are being router across various pipes
is something else that needs to be looked at. This is a big issue
for sites that have remote sites hanging off of them. Say the pipe
is designed to handle 12 calls, if someone picks up and tries to
make a 13 call, that 13 call will affect the other 12 calls so you
have bad 13 bad calls. If you have a call manager that knows
how to police these sort of things or you keep this in mind, you'll
save yourself alot of headaches.
We've currently got three buildings running VoIP phones approximately
5000+ in number. This is made up of a combination of Nortel phones
and signaling servers and Cisco c3750-PS-E/S PoE switch stacks in
the IDF's. We're currently scaling this to allow the server to
backup each other, and adding 2 more large buildings with 4000 more
IP phones. There is also a "Toll By-pass" feature that we're working
with to connect our 400+ remote sites that are connected via T-1's and
DS-3's. I should mention that we also have video conferencing at over
100 of these sites and 50 with in the MAN that we have.
Just something to think about that could save you time, headaches and
possibly you're job.
I'm not sure if any of you have seen Bob at his best, but
he is one hell of a stand up comedian, filthy, and definitly
not "G" rated. He's been a guest on XM202 on the Opie and Anthony
Show, part of the "Traveling Virus Show". If you
get the chance, check him out, you'll not look at him
the same way again.
sure changing the MAC address is easy, but if you're
using the "STICKY" MAC functions on your Cisco Switches,
changing the MAC will result in loss of connectivity.
Once your user plugs their workstation into the jack,
they workstation's MAC is paired to that port. If
down the road, you need to replace the workstation/and/or/NIC,
you'll have to clear the "STICKY" MAC on that port
and pair them.
not sure how far appart your buildings are, but this product seems promising;
http://www.gigabeam.com/
mount this on the building, then attach your internal infrastructure and
you're home free.
I'd go along with that, except most of the time
I've been queued, was after getting DC'd.
sad part is if you look at realm status, both
website, and login client, I've been queued on
a server with LOW population, but not queued on
servers with FULL population. This could be people
jumping and such, but never know.
With the amount of subscribers that Blizzard has,
I'm sure that they would want to kick some of that
cash back into upgrading the PIPE or PIPES they use
to feed their datacenter, and also look at changing
their infrastructure to not have these issues.
Does the overload reflect the design of the
client-server communications model, or some other
factor. I know EA has no clue how to properly write
a network client-server model, hense the huge overhead
required for their servers and limiting number of clients
in privately hosted servers (~~ 4 to 6 on cable/DSL).
Maybe I'm just ranting.. but
Aside from the lag that's been creeping in..
You know the one, the lag-o-meter says 134ms
and is green, but you're lagging. so you can't
even log out. The meter acutally goes down in
readings (albet after alot of people are kicked).
But my big point is this dam queue setup on login.
I'll login and it says 'you are 33rd in queue"
and "wait time of 3 mins"... then something happens where
I'll get all the way up to 500+ in line with a 30 min
or greater wait time. How does this happen,
if you're in a queue, it should be a FIFO queue.
he'll I've been 5th in line and gotten bumped to 200+ in
line. That makes no sense, if I'm already in
the queue, how can I be bumped ??!!!!
I've also seen other reviews that show that the FX-60
out performs the 955 in most of the marks. Yeah the
955 does come out on top in a few. It's pretty
impressive that a FX-60 non-overclocked at stock
2.6Ghz can beat the 955 EE that's overclocked to 4+Ghz.
Go figure..
There are a few review sources that I trust, because
they have no bias towards the products or vendors.
Along with the sites mention by hattig, check out
the last two issues of MaximumPC, they usually
beat the hell out of machines when testing, and
even if they love something, they'll still have
something bad to say about, but usually in a positive
way.
Devise a plan to use that hot and saucey Kerri (red-headed goddess),
to prove the myth, that you can't successfully pull a EverQuestI/II and/or
Worlds of Warcraft junky, be it male or more interestingly female,
game addict and prove that they can/can't interact with a real life
female, in a real life relationship (albet it a short one).
This could tie into the myth with the old saying,
"Red on the Head, Fire in bed" !!!
Just a thought..
Sounds like you're looking for a single solution to the problem. That might be a lost cause, but that being said, there are tons of things you can use.
We use a few tools, Nagios pulls or configs and stuff. Alot of the tools out there are highly configurable and you can expand on them.
If you're using Cisco Systems routers and switches,
you can pretty much pull the serial numbers, and IOS revs from the devices with SNMP gets, I say most, since alot of the older ones do not give up their serial info via SNMP. One thing we do, is add info to the SNMP variables that makes it easier to pull data from them. Like this;
snmp-server chassis-id (XXXXXXX/XXXXXX/.../XXXXXX/XXXXXX)
snmp-server location (location)
snmp-server contact (POC)
The example above is from a c3750-48TS-S switch.
These switches are stackable via the stackwise cable, which when stacked they act like one single multi slotted switch. Since you can pull the IOS rev and Serial number natively, we add the
"snmp-server chassis-id xxxxxx/xxxxxx/xxxxxx to
the system. The xxxxxx are replaced by the
asset tag barcodes and are in order that
relates to the position of the switch in the
stack. you could add other info to this as
needed.
With the proper programming know-how, you can expand this, and also use various other methods,
such as telnetting via script pulling info, SNMP
configuraion downloads, etc..
Now I can swoop on in and snatch up Sweet Morgan Webb and Sarah...
Damn, my visions of Morgan and Sarah in rubber wet suits, brandishing a buggy whip and a pair of Jumper-cables is one step closer to becoming reality..
But come on now, is it me, but doesn't anyone else see to find Laura Foy and Tina Wood oddly hot and tasty ??
Im curious, when AOL changed the Groups@AOL.com servers to not allow any files over 3megs, I ended up using my email to send users the daily who updates and logs, and all of a sudden I started getting tagged for being a spammer. How does one go about getting their domain un-Black-listed ?
My mail server is secure (RR and others regularly try to bounce mail off me as well as others), but I'm on a dynamic ip address. My outbound SMTP is thru a 3-rd party mailer to get around some of the issues.
Reading AOL's board there, they say they can put you on a dynamic trusted list, but they dont really go into too much detail.
I want to get unblack listed, then see about going about doing this.
correct me if I'm wrong, but yes the
civilization was not from Earth.. But
its always been implied that Earth was
one of the long lost off shoots of that
civilization. That's why they were
searching for Earth. That would explain
why things on Earth had the same names
on BSG. There are parallel yet at times
intersecting technology trees (dare I say that).
I've been a hard-core Trek fan for years.. I found it hard to get into Enterprise, but it grew on me.
I'm not exactly sure which was the episode that
Enterprise jumped the shark, but I sorta had the
feeling it was starting to go the way the old
Xenia and Hercules went, with the cross-overs,
traveling into the future and such... Putting
them on, on Fridays was proably what killed
them. Sci-fi has "StarGate SG-1", "Farscape"
(before the changed the lineout, they introduced
"StarGate Atlantis", and now the rebirth of
"BattleStar Galactica"
I hate to say, that I've been watching the new Battlestar Galactica, and am really impressed.
The changes in casting, puts a new twist on things, and I'm interested to see where the
series goes.
I'm probably going to take serious flamings
on this one, but since they're reviving the
shows I used to watch religiously.. I think
they should look at remaking the British
Sci-Fi series "Space 1999". I'm sure with
todays effects and technology, Im sure
it would give a few good seasons. I'd
like to see what knockout vixen they'd
cast to play that shape-shifter Miya..
Thats my 2 cents.. I'm punching out..
1) there are only 2 premium channels, Playboy and 202-HighVoltage (aka Opien and Anthony virus channel).
2) yes streaming may cost 5 bucks, but when you look at the numbers of people listening via streaming, and the amount of data streamed, there has to be a cost differential. Non XM subscribers may pay a little more to listen to streaming content, but thats more than rightly justified, since they dont have the montly/yearly subscription fee, but it's still less then the normal subscription fee to listen to the streaming content. I'd like to see what happens if Stern's so called 6 million listeners start to listen to a free stream from Sirius, depending on the stream encoding, higher than 32k, usually 56k and 128K, but at 32K, 6Million (I know worst case), the data for the initial connection and start would be 192000000K, thats a ton of bandwidth, and a ton of expense, for free streaming. Not to mention the server farm and load balancers needed for such a setup, would be a huge initial investment, plus standard upkeep and maintainence costs.
3) You really need to check your facts. XM DOES have dissounts if you pay annually, thats where they get the 9.95, and you DO get discounts when you add additional receivers. I have 3 plus my pre-ordered MyFi, and the additional receivers are added at 6.95 as part of the family plan or so the call it.
Now I can't forget Sirius with their part-time stations. Look at their channel guides and see, unless then changed it, the have a few channels, one being a comedy channel, that gets pre-empted for some silly sporting events. Are they too cheap to have channels for these events ??
XM will now start to carry the next seasons MLB games, adding to their existing football coverage.
hmmpf, big difference, not to mention the fact that there have been alot of Sirius employees that havent received regular pay checks, due to money issues. I'd like to know where they got the alledged $500,000,000 to sign Mr Stern.
I still bet, he's going nuts, to think that he isnt the first shock jock on Satellite radio, Opie and Anthony beat him to the punch and started back on Oct 4th, 2004, and are currently on their 43rd show (41 actually, if you dont count the 2 BestOf/WorstOf shows over the thanksgiving holiday).
Did I forget to mention, that XM has some of the smallest receivers as well, some of those Sirius receivers weight a ton, I looked at adding sirius to my collection, but wasnt impressed. In fact XM has recently came out with a sweet component receiver from Polk Audio, that makes integration into ones home hifi setup simple and aesthetically appealing to the eye.
Im not set in my ways, and open to interpetation, but at the moment, its tought to find a better cost effective solution.
I'll get off my soap box and wait for the Sten junkies to flame away !!!
what type of DVD writer do you have??
I know a few people that have pioneer DVD
writers, and have ran into issues
where they've done backups to the DVD-r and
then not been able to read the backups back
later. I guess there's a small piece of software
that you have to get, that doesnt come bundled with the writer. Not sure what that is, if i find out I can let you know.
We had the same problem here, someone went and started to image our new sites, and hmm what do we find but Gator.. this thing was driving us nuts, but since we have our own internal DNS that gets used, we put an entry in the DNS
that pointed all traffic destine for gator to 127.0.0.1.. the gator traffic that was 75% of our outbound traffic dropped to 0%...
I'll believe it when I see it.. The StarWars Galaxy is one of the most God awful beta's that I've been in to this date. I dont see how you can beta test the damn game with the servers constantly down. There are messages where they say servers up for the day testing, only to be up for 15 minutes if you're lucky.. Holidays come and go, and you'd think the servers would be up for testing, but Nooooo.. bah... ginsu....
Back in the late 80's and early 90's I had this idea, but was lacking in startup funds. Had plans to have a few scattered sites at first and linked them together so you could have Clan vs Clan type events... but alas like all my ideas, someone else beat me to it.. I still have one little feather in my cap... its a combination chickenwing/brothel type place.... had cooks lined up (like that was hard), just had to get the female talent... this one would and still is a gold mine.. unlike the failed "Baglady relocation program" that was started a few years back.
exactly... 10Gbps or the new 100Gbps that they're working on at the moment.

true, but if you look, on youtube, they have a 100mb limit on movie size so that could add up..
