I installed a 2 Node RAC environment on Vmware using my laptop which was a 2Gz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB of ram. (Instructions here )

So you don't need something super powerful if you don't plan on leaving them all running 24x7 and just startup the ones you are playing with at the time. A Quad core system with at least 4GB of ram should and lots of disk should be plenty.

I would stay away from running any of your environments on external USB drives. I have a 1 TB USB 2.0 drive and its too slow for anything heavy such as installing Oracle E-Business Suite.. However databases and RAC worked fine.

I've played around a fair bit with Oracle and VMware so if you have any questions feel free to ask.

I was looking forward to playing Halo Wars, especially since I started playing Red Alert 3 at Xmas. The game is fun to play and the control scheme in some ways is better than RA3 but in others its worse. The best part about RA3 is that you have access to everything from anywhere on the map. With HW you have to go back to your base, which is easy to do with the dial pad but then you lose your place.

I'm sure there are little tricks that could make the game move faster but thats just my personal experience.

AC1 still brings back more favorable memories than any other MMORPG I have played since then. I think its because it actually took some skill to play. You could put yourself in impossible situations and if you played it right, you'd escape within a hair of your life. I dunno how many times I was down to my last hit point or two. ;)

Another part of it was the story, which was well written. In todays MMORPG each quest is available to everyone.. but in AC, the main quest story was mainly only accomplished by one person. Seeing a headline broadcast with your name in it, was pretty cool.

And no other game has been able to reproduce corpse recovery on the Obsidian Plains. ;)

I work for a medium sized company with hundreds of servers in our main server room. (I'm not including the 100's of others in smaller labs, etc.)

Its a huge undertaking to power down servers. There are some pretty complex relationships between applications and servers, so just powering them off isn't a simple task.

Every few years we have to do a complete shutdown for electrical work. Guaranteed a few servers will have problems and not power up. So, given the man hours + cost of failure I can't see how in the end we would be saving any money.

I'm sure there are a few servers that could be shutdown but at the end of the day I don't think we'd be saving much on power.

A few years ago we consolidated environments on newer hardware and got rid of the old. We could support more environments on less hardware, so we saved power costs but more importantly licensing costs. Just by consolidating a few Oracle servers saved us a boat load. I would say that approach would save more money than shutting down servers when idle. So if you have idle servers, consolidate.

Have you ever worked for a medium to large company? This is the norm in such companies. Management doesn't care how much productivity was lost and of course, they still expect you to get your work done on time.

As well, just to correct you, its management enforcing recommendations from a security analyst. The network admin couldn't give a rat's ass, they just implement some of the policies. You forgot to mention unix/windows administrators, dba's, etc.. Share the hate. (BTW, i'm a DBA.)

Its the security analysts job to try and to prevent breaches, IT to implement and managements job to weight the cost of security with productivity. The problem is that management is too scared to set realistic security policies. All they care about is CYA.

Yes, installing Oracle is simple.. You could even install Oracle's E-Business Suite easily. The hard part is configuring it and its even harder to configure it for performance.

Behind an environment built for performance is network, SAN and OS. If the admins for theses services aren't familiar with your application or databases then chances are its not configured optimally. You wouldn't believe how many arguments I have had with OS and SAN admins who believe that they can use the same generic configuration that they use for any other server.

It could be that they are no good at interviews... I had a friend in university who would defrost the CS club room fridge every time there was an exam... Brillant guy but couldn't take tests.

So in those cases, instead of playing it safe and looking at other applicants I would rather give them a test. Unfortunately HR won't let me.. So, in summary, I don't believe an exam should be required in all cases but in some it should.

Other than that, there are a few things that annoy me but nothing that royally ticks me off like the printer issue. I should say, i'm a casual user.
