You're complaining about human nature which isn't going to change. Your best bet is to continue safe in the knowledge that you're one of the true elite-- a capable, self-driven person who can find the information and put it to practical use. You are the kind of person who would survive in the event of a mass extinction while MTV-raised brats whine about not being able to find food and do nothing, and then they die. I too would prefer to live like Mad Max than not at all. There's a lot of bitterness from those of us who have seen the future, but unfortunately the "hell in a handbasket" theory is difficult to persuade people with. Make them feel it in the wallet and you'll succeed, otherwise I suggest you brush up on your knife fighting ability.

Good points-- my biggest problem with the special editions was the new effects being unnecessary or integrating poorly with the originals. The Jabba the Hutt in the first special edition was really poorly done, he looked all blurry and was a different shade of color than the Jedi Jabba the Hutt. I admit that the sand pit in Jedi did look way too much like a really nasty vagina until Lucas put in the appendage with the beak, so that's fixed.

I'm not going to spend the, we're talking millions of dollars here, the money and the time to refurbish that, because to me, it doesn't really exist anymore. It's like this is the movie I wanted it to be, and I'm sorry you saw half a completed film and fell in love with it. But I want it to be the way I want it to be. I'm the one who has to take responsibility for it. I'm the one who has to have everybody throw rocks at me all the time, so at least if they're going to throw rocks at me, they're going to throw rocks at me for something I love rather than something I think is not very good, or at least something I think is not finished.

Lucas is going to have a lot of rocks thrown at him. As someone in an earlier post stated, Lucas is a control freak and doesn't seem to grasp that his vision today differs from his vision when he made the movies. :-/

same in CA. But those laws, like many minor offenses, are only on the books so the authorities can e.g. violate a parolee when they search him and find the lockpicking tools on him, or so the prosecutor can enhance someone's sentence (a.k.a. "throw the book" at someone). Stay under the radar of the criminal justice system and you don't have to worry as much.

FireWire 800 had really been more attractive to a professional crowd. And really, more [appealing] than the speed has been the advantages [professionals] have with cable lengths.

What does this statement mean? It's pretty much throwaway. I hate apple marketing. They need to make the iMac G5 without the display (oh wait...attractive to a professional crowd = power mac). *sigh*

I second that thought-- I bought a Mac G3/266 tower in summer 1998 for $1500. Over the next 10 months I upgraded it with Rage128 video, 256 MB ram, a fast, new hard drive, USB, etc., and overclocked it to 292 Mhz. Anticipating the release of the G4 computers in fall 1999 I sold it on ebay to a graphic designer who wanted to use all her legacy ADB/localtalk equipment like graphics tablets, printers, etc. for an incredible $2600. When the G4's came out I bought the base model 400 MHz for $1500 and have had it ever since with a bunch of upgrades. That's six years, two computers, and about $2500 spent on them total. It's been a great deal so far. The only problems are that in the now-five year life of my G4 two different hard drives have died, the three year-old RAID is on the way out, and the flat panel display that I bought in 2001 has a dead voltage inverter. The computer is still at 100%. I even left it on for four straight months as a webserver. With a new SuperDrive, it's basically all I need for development work. I'm disinclined to upgrade because it works well and I can't justify spending 2 grand on a G5. What I would love is a new iMac without the monitor.

The original Cardio-MAC from NC Systems was introduced in 1992 or so running on a Quadra 950 ($10,000 with the proprietary software) and it actually ran pretty well.

Most of the nuclear imaging industry today has transitioned away from Mac to cheaper Windows XP hardware for viewing and processing images. Or from the classic Sun ADAC systems ($50,000+ each with AutoQuant processing software). Not only is the software cheaper and the support better on the Windows-based workstations, it's a lot easier to use on a day-to-day basis than the Sun system and you can use all modern hardware. For instance the hulking 21 inch sun monitor is a piece of junk while the 15 inch screen on my father's viewing station (a Dell laptop) is beautiful. The mac system may be the easiest but it makes things difficult when the rest of the office is on windows. Unfortunately, the Philips/Sun ADAC systems are clumsy and still run a version of Solaris from 1994 or so and are really difficult to upgrade. The Mac systems still run OS 9.1 and are becoming obsolete. The biggest hurdle to more Mac adoption is that to my knowledge the industry doesn't have processing software for Mac OS X, and why should they when windows xp is the dominant platform. However, there are still relatively new Mac systems in the industry, such as the NC Systems Cardio-MAC, which is an excellent system although it does run mac os 9.

Actually, there are now a lot of linux-based computers used for controlling medical cameras and other devices instead of the proprietary manufacturer-built control computers, although they aren't used for viewing images. Go figure.
