"my backup cluster of 300 servers is ready to hop into action right away."
BZZT, the servers may not be connected to the network.
Why dont you use Linux, use those extra servers and load balance all the hits accross them (or some of them and use the rest for failover)? And still pay less than Microsoft's fees?
I'm a long time Vodafone subscriber (switched _from_ telecom before their $10 text deal) and am incredibly happy with the service Vodafone provides.
Now when Telecom announced their $10/month for unlimited text almost everyone I knew could see into the (near) future that Telecom was going to pull the old "bait and switch" with this whole deal.
I would constantly put the sales reps that accosted me at my University on the spot by asking in a loud voice when the deal will end. They said "indefinate" while umming and ahhhing which then I would say "So, you could change it next month, right?".
Now while this "unlimited" texting went on, people started to wonder how Telecom could afford this kind of madness, but Telecom in New Zealand controls a huge majority of Phone lines, toll calls, ADSL connections and controls one of the largest ISP's in NZ (Xtra). We knew where they were getting their money from they were subsidising their losses in the cell phone division from their other (more profitable) departments.
So as more and more people started to poke their nose into Telecom's business, we knew their next move was coming next. $10/month for 500 texts. Now the deal is still a huge savings in money, but it's just the fact that Telecom changed the rules while the game was being played and that upset a lot of people.
Vodafone cannot compete with those prices, so Vodafone chose to start pushing their interactive GPRS technologies such as Vodafone Live! (neat wap portal) and PXT (picture messages). Now even though I could save $50/month I simply do not trust telecom! I'm an account holder with Vodafone (not prepay) and I just will not deal with Telecom more than I have to, lest they choose to rip me off.
KDE has "Klipper". You know that annoying little bastard (it can be disabled!!!) that pops up when you copy to the clipboard something it recognizes (such as a URL). While useful, that isn't it's best feature.
It also keeps a "Clipboard History" of the last half-dozen or so (configureable) clipboard entries which you can easily switch between.

Holly: Well, the thing about a black hole - its main distinguishing feature - is it's black. And the thing about space, your basic space color... is black. So how are you supposed to see them?
I'm sorry, I don't know what makes me piss myself everytime I see this "MOD PARENT DOWN" Troll, but it just seems so urgent. I think it's the "hurry". You're right, the joke isn't fucking funny.
You know, if the UT had sat on this and not told anyone, I bet it's people like you who would stand up and say "Why wasn't something done to stop this!" or something.

Get a Playstation! Thats what I did and since have been able to kiss windows goodbye and still play games that I like.
Call me paranoid but I swear I saw a classified in the paper:

By default it's is, but if you read the docs (in the forums) on how to get the 2.6 kernel working, it tells your to run "bootstrap-2.6.sh" instead of bootstrap.sh
I had a lot of stability problems running the 2.6 kernel with a NPTL Glibc compiled against the 2.4 headers.
Sure, cruise over to one of Gentoo's mirrors and look in their "experimental" directory. Failing that, check distrowatch as they have a very large livecd list.
2.4: Compiling, listening to Ogg's and burning a CD. Result: Skipping music and a coastered CD.
2.6: Compiling, listening to Oggs and burning a CD. Result: burning works better than with ide-scsi emulation, music is smooth and skip-free. Compiling is a little bit slower, but hey, I use Gentoo I can wait.
"Sadly, that won't upgrade everything... just the packages recorded in the "world" file, which means if you let emerge figure out your dependancies somewhere along the line, rather than explicitly mentioning them on the command line, they might be skipped here, depending on how good the -D detection works."
-D stands for deep. It means everything in the world file and everything that everything in the world file depends on. This does the same thing as your awk/sed scripts according to the docs. After all, if you didnt expicitly specify it on the command line (therefore added into your world file) and isn't a dependancy of a package in your world file, what is it? See below why this is a bad idea.
"I use a series of awk and sed scripts to make sure my world file contains a list of all my installed packages to make it easier to keep track of what's been changed recently."
Bad Idea, you are just asking for dependancy problems by doing that. For instance:
PackageA depends on LibraryB 1.0 LibraryB 2.0 is released and is Binary Incompatable with LibraryB 1.0. LibraryB 1.0 is upgraded to 2.0 when you emerge -uD world breaking Package A.
SLOTs fix this problem to a certain extent, but with things like libraries is there any reason to have the bleeding edge? It's not like your dependant programs can use the new features.
I wonder if the RIAA feels the same way about this as normal RF radio? Will satallite radio stations need to pay for higher fees to play copyrighted music than normal radio?
That is assuming the Sat radio is of much higher quality than the RF radio and that dubbing music off the radio is a much higher risk for the RIAA.
Of course, this only really applies to music stations and not news stations etc...
Do we really have to go over this again? The reason NVIDIA can _not_ open source their driver is that parts of their hardware (and possibly software) that is driven by it is licenced from other companies, and that licence states that the source code, and even the specifications of that engine may _not_ be released.
Gnome is the better "supported" option because it doesn't require royalties for closed source development.
In my opinion, GTK/GNOME is _less_ free because of the LGPL. The GPL was created so that the freedom goes where the software does, and it's not true with the LGPL.
It seems that the Qt/KDE effort cannot win! First they got the rasberry because Qt wasn't licenced under a free licence, now that it is everyone complains when there is a penalty for developing closed source applications!
Personally, I could see this turn of events coming. Having read books such as Cyberpunk and Takedown and watched that doco "Freedom Downtime" I've drawn the conclusion that Kevin appears to be more "misguided" than dangerous and also more "attention seeking" than a model hacker for script kiddies to chase after.
I must admit though, I would be _very_ interested to read this book when it hits the press:)
Nice idea in general, especially the technology being used in 911 calls, but the main fault I see in this is simply turning the phone off. This will cause people to walk around with their cellphones powered down (I know I would) and only activate it for making a call.
This kinda thing will cancel out all the effort made to have easy communication wherever/whenever. Or am I wrong in assuming that most people would care about this?
Furthermore, is there a way to only enable cell-site directional tracking on only 911/111 calls?
RedHat's kernels are proprietary releases for the RedHat software package.
Proprietary they ain't.
You can download the Redhat kernel's source code if you feel so inclined (gentoo has a handy "emerge redhat-sources"), all their patches etc... are considered a derived work of the linux kernel and therefore are covered under the GPL licence conditions.
My take on the whole "don't use.0 releases" is that in my eyes, the -testXX's are beta releases, and the.0-~.5 are "release candidates", that seems to serve me quite well in my system admin duties.
I didn't see Linus Torvalds suing them because "Lindows" sounds like "Linux":O

I actually call it the G-spot, as it's right next to the G key on the keyboard!
Their new website is very easy to use, looks great and I applaud the developers. All the information I need is but a click away!
Also, the Wine project helps me do anything I need in Linux. ~90% of the Windows programs that I try under Wine work. Keep up the good work, guys :)
