  1. Re:Except that Google is so much cheaper... on Google Considered Too Big To Fail · · Score: 1

Three cents for a click is a steal!

Right now I have 103 clicks since my last Google adsense payment, which will pay me $74.44. That's an average of $0.73 per click. Some clicks pay me over a dollar. Google must be taking a cut for this, advertisers are paying even more.

I started a Google adwords campaign for a company a few years ago, and thought I'd have no problem finding some keywords where I could get a trickle of customers at $0.10. No dice. I had to move to a dollar or two a click before I could even spend my advertising budget.

A second piece of hardware is a really good idea if it's possible to get. You can apply system updates first to the test environment to make sure it will work before putting them on the production server. You can install new server software versions and make sure the software works on it before upgrading the production system.

Also, it's nice having a complete set of hardware as a backup in case you have some critical component on the production hardware fail that you can't immediately replace. Maybe this guy was clueless, but he had the right idea. Now you have 'educated' yourself out of a proper setup.

    This is my thought, exactly.

I didn't post because I hate solutions that don't cover everything. If they don't fit all the requirements they are not a complete solution. So let me take a shot on those requirements:

    1) Blogging

If you really want to do up to the minute blogging, it's probably to let people at home know you're ok. Try the following, all funded by money saved from the laptop purchase. 1) Internet cafes, 2) Phone call home to someone important (parents?) who will be kind enough to post a blog for you, using the passwords you've shared with them before you left, 3) Mo-blog from a global mobile phone, or get prepaids or something. You can set up a blog to post from a text message (to an email address), right?

    2) Burning DVD's

Get a DVD-burning camcorder, and just mail the original DVD's if you can't find an internet cafe with a burner. They might get lost in the mail, but probably not. If you mail them to your blogging phone buddy (and they are savvy) you might also get a video blog out of it!

The end of the article comments on how the bee algorithm also allows the data center to save power. It seems like if the data center isn't getting many requests, it can send some servers into power saving standby mode. Much like if there isn't much honey to collect, the bees stay in the hive and save energy.

Are other web data centers able to shut down some servers at night to save power, or is it just because this data center seems configured to allow the servers to each serve any number of websites?
