While I agree that the taxation without representation was a factor, by 1776 George had removed most of the offending taxes.
Yes, but those taxes were unenforceable. The remaining tax was reasonable, and enforceable. So the effective tax rate went from 0% to someting like 3% (I don't remember the exact percentage). If the colonies had been able to send representatives to the House of Commons there would have been a lot of grumbling but no revolution. As it was the new tax touched off a powder keg.
I think the final straw was the humiliation of Ben Franklin in Parliment. That event turned him from a fierce loyalist to a fierce revolutionary. Between him and John Adams (who was considered a hothead), they convinced Thomas Jefferson, and the rest is history.
Dear Ms. Kurtz,
As I am not interested in other people running my computer, will you be providing a non-crippled product for the low level hardware control presently provided by your BIOS? I find your CSS product to be unacceptable. In point of fact I find trusted computing in general to be unacceptable, and I will if I can possibly manage it avoid purchasing "Trusted Computing" systems and will so advise my clients, friends, and family.
"Once in the enlightenment of vivid concoction I saw God."
I know that drink! They called it "Purple Jesus"! They told me that if you drank two of those you would see Jesus. I was on my fifth. My friends all hated me the next day because they all had hangovers and I didn't.
Business is about nothing if not profit, and as far as I am aware, no one is forced to buy anything. There is no exploitation, nor extortion (another popular term used by the leftwing element of slashdot) in business in any negative sense, unless you want to use the lexicon of communism.
You've never been in business for yourself I see.
Want to buy a bridge? Or some premium Florida (Everglades) property? Would I lie to you? Honestly, the check is in the mail!
Or as a great business man once said "It is a moral imperative to part a fool from his money as soon as possible." P. T. Barnum.
Why don't you celebrate Christmas the way the first Christians did. They prepared for the Christmas feast by holding the Winter Lent, that's right folks, forty days, no meat, prayer and fasting, just like Easter. Then on Christmas Day they went to Church, had Communion, and then went to the feast, which lasted twelve days (Remember that old song the Twelve Days of Christmas?) until Epiphany on January 6th. During the Twelve Days of Christmas small gifts were exchanged to honor Christ and the gifts of the Magi at His birth. Nothing expensive, just to show you cared.
The "holiday spirit" seems to be an evil spirit that wants to cause financial ruin and detracts from the charachter of the day.
For those of us who live in the US, since Thanksgiving is a great national holiday, start fasting the Monday after Thanksgiving (gives everyone a chance to use up the leftovers).
First off, copyright law is a restriction of the peoples natural right to copy, for the purpose of providing publishers with an incentive to publish new and older works by granting them a LIMITED monopoly for a LIMITED time.
Within your own houshold it is completely legal to make a MILLION copies. As long as you do not sell them or distribute them. Before the DMCA it was even legal to give those million copies away to friends and aquiantances, as long as you did not use a photocopier to make them and as long as you did not charge for them.
The reason for copyright law in the first place was to fill the shelves of libraies throughout this country with valuable works.
So basicly the problem is that media companies, having extended copyright to almost 150 years, want you to have NO RIGHT TO COPY ANYTHING!
This is theft. Shall I pay Heath (publishers of Calculus by Larson and Hostetler Copyright 1979) $0.01 every time I use a calculus equation? I have to copy their printed formula every time I use it. Does this mean that I have to pay CRC Press for using one of their equations from their Standard Math Tables or The Handbook of Chemistry and Physics? Do I owe money to MCI every time I hum Gimme Three Steps? Do I owe New Line Cinema money for REMEMBERING scenes from LOTR? All of these actions involve copying information, even if it's just to my own organic memory.
The proper definition of IP privacy is someone who copies a work for profit. Napster and Sharman certainly qualify under those terms. The people using P2P networks do not. DRM is basicly a theft of peoples fair and proper use of their own property for the stated reason of preventing piracy, but in fact so as to make people pay over and over for the same thing. The pirates are best addressed by enforcing existing pre-1976 law. All the rest is simply squeezing every cent possible out of you.
Actually the problem is the humanities in the US have an attitude problem. The problem is called "Political Correctness" (aka PC), which purports to be an answer to the problems of racism, but really is a way to practice thought control. The young lady in question was reacting to a trigger word (integration) and the overheard fragment, relating to calculus, "I hate integration." Her response was to attempt to stifle the conversation (which she did not know the context of) by acting outraged. Mockery and derision is an entirely appropriate response to that kind of thought control. Note that none of the particapants in the conversation were actual racists.
I do agree with you that no one should be considered an idiot because of their education. Unfortunatly the spread of PC, especially in the humanities, has caused many students in the US to leave University acting like complete asses. And no they do not show any respect for anyone who disagrees with them in the least.
Which brings us back to the idiotic LA story about master/slave IDE drive designations being objectionable and now illegal in LA county.
Now that you've felt free to call me a fanatic, let me ask you something. Would you want your daughter involved in porn? Would you feel better if your wife made a living having SEX with other men? Do you think porn is a good career for your Mother?
To answer your question, no, I wouldn't care. I'd be amused.
Unfortunatly for your argument I looked at your website. You'll learn.
My question is relavent because you are making assumptions about an industry you know nothing about. Yes, there are some bad apples, just like anywhere else. The Catholic church has it's bad apple's too, doesn't it? Conculsion: pr0n is not automatically evil. Far from it. There is nothing wrong with pleasure as long as your method of deriving pleasure is done in a responsible manner.
What makes you think I'm ignorant of the porn industry? Your conclusion is laughable. Try this one on for size, some Catholic priests are evil men. Does that mean the Church is evil, no; does that mean because there are good people involved in the porn industry that it is NOT an evil enterprise, also no.
You're probably going to discount this, as I don't have a link or source handy to back this up, but I learned a long time ago that a study done by a University had determined that rapists look at far less pornography than the average male. Makes sense. All those sexual frustrations building up with no place to go... Probably why all those priests were molesting little boys. The clergy can't marry, nor can they have sex. So, they flip out. You, my friend, are trying to deny what Nature wants us to have.
I can believe rapists don't much look at porn, why look at pictures of women being raped by other guys when you can do it yourself. BTW most rapists HATE women, that's why they rape.
Regarding the priests, there are fewer sexual predatotrs in Holy Orders than in the population at large. They're just REALLY HIGH PROFILE! BTW Orthodox Christian Priests marry and have children. Celibacy among parish priests is a pecuiliarity of the Roman Catholic Church alone. When did I ever say people shouldn't have sexual relations? That would be silly. I said porn is the wrong context.
In every species of animal on the planet, menstruation and ovulation occur at the same moment, so that males will know it is time to procreate. Every species, that is, except ours. In humans, women menstruate at the time they are least likely to get pregnant. It's almost as if God is holding up a big sign, begging us to have sex. It relives stress. It is good exercise. It's fun. Just because you don't fully understand it's intricacies does not mean that you should be damning everyone else who does. Take your fanaticism and shove it.
Not a biologist I see. Menstration is the process of sloughing off the lining of the uterus. During this process no egg can implant. Therefore the timing is such that it happens almost exactly BETWEEN ovulations. Most female animals go ino HEAT when they are ovulating, which for large bodied mammals is usually in the spring. The rest of the year the entire appuratus pretty much SHUTS DOWN. Primates are an exception to this rule. Human females can best be described as being in a low (just enough to keep the reproductive system pretty much constantly available) state of heat form the ages of thirteen to approximatly forty-five. Given this situation, and that human children are VERY difficult to raise, human females require a level of commitment from human males not generally seen in the animal world. Porn makes a mockery of this. Porn is all about no commitments and so is unnatural for humans. Porn abandons the female after you've had your satisfaction and requires nothing more from you. Porn is about grabbing all of the benefits of human sexuality and paying none of the (very considerable) costs. Porn is irresponsible and ultimatly dangerous.
Now that you've felt free to call me a fanatic, let me ask you something. Would you want your daughter involved in porn? Would you feel better if your wife made a living having SEX with other men? Do you think porn is a good career for your Mother? If you answered no to any of these questions then why is it a good choice for someone elses mother, wife, daughter or sister? Do you think you're better than everyone else?
True. Horrific, but true.
Which scares economists and control freaks out of their skins.
I was thinking Linux, but OK, I agree.
But it's so UNUSUAL for them that it IS newsworthy.

It's called a faraday cage on a motherboard. Use a thicker gauge of aluminum to keep it from falling over and frying everything.

Even the ones who will flame me for this post.
Sounds like the only workable solution I've heard. Also since twelve publishers can be more remeberd that two hundred authors, this scheme will work.

DRM is corrupt and counter productive.
Unless of course the President is a fool.
Actually not a bad example. I was trying to render the sound one makes when vomiting.
Cool. Sorry about the burnout.
Thanks.

Chemistry, minor in Philosophy.
All at once a large body of narcs burst into the hall from the passage the company had followed and charged them, waving hammers and sickles.
"Yalu, Yalu," shouted their leader, brandishing a huge faggot.
"You dieth, G.I.," cried the faggot.

Me, I'm a mad scientist. At my salary you'd be pretty mad too.
Fine Woodworking has a graet article on setting up a woodshop. You might look at it for the storage tips.
