I guess that's why nerds don't like the idea of a device you're not supposed to type on (like a touchscreen phone like the iPhone) it's not really a computing device. It's not meant for user interaction. It's like a TV it's meant to stream data one way -> the user.
So it brings in a mainstream audience and once again developers who could be writing software that actually produces real improvements is drawn into supporting it. So we all lose out.
Linux devs who could be improving their cloud experience are drawn into writing "Linux for tablets" with an interface you can use with one hand.
Game dev's who used to take for granted that the user would search for the best possible control interface spend agonizing hours trying to design games for people with one thumb and an index finger as their control choice.
Software designers in general move one step closer to being interface designers. People forget that CIS stands for Information Scientist... not programmer, or GUI monkey. And we lose a bunch of brilliant minds to finance, architecture or some other school which doesn't really produce a future.
I'd like to think touch pads are a bubble, that people will realize that if they want to PRODUCE to COMMUNICATE they need a real interface. But once again it will be the mainstream taking over. As went Film, As went the Internet, so go computers. We told them they were important, they listened, they came, they nerfed.
In the mean time look at tablet users like couch potatoes, and iPhone users the same way. With pity. Eventually they'll realize they've become couch potatoes too... but we don't have to wait.
And how about with a case, headphones, keyboard, all the other things that come standard on a laptop for half the price? A replaceable battery? Standard SIM slot? Unlocking? Jailbreaking? Productivity apps?
How do we get on this "Target Market" gravy train?
We support devices, we recommend devices, hell we buy a lot of devices as gifts. These gifts often create whole customer ecosystems in families and recipients.
Now I task the Slashdot collective with this question: How do we as geeks, nerds, and savvy consumers become "The Target Market" how do we outshine the shine. How do we get our complaints into the media, the marketer's ear, the boardroom. Let's make a plan together and follow it through. People paying $500 for a toy they think is a computer is just unacceptable. People buying something without the option of having data backed up to a removable external system is unacceptable (Support a borked IPad ["It won't turn on ","I'm ready to wipe... oh wait!" vs one that backs up user data on removable media).
Can we implement a standard $15 fee, where we research the best product for the user and tell them where to buy it? How about a "you're on your own for buying a stupid product without proper counsel" clause? Is being hard asses the way to go?
My Dad just bought my mom a $3000 Mac laptop without consulting me, she HATES it. How is this crap still going on? I didn't know she wanted a laptop even!
This comment is stupid. You can either copy and paste or you can't. You can either code events the way the developers do, or you can't.
What's fascinating to me about this whole thing is that developers aren't moving towards a technology where they can use CAMERAS to create environments instead of artists.
Information is information, violence is violence, theft is theft. Canada is fortunate to have one of the broadest freedom of speech policies in the world.
Dangerous information: Bombs: Yea, good for preventing fascism. Yelling fire: No one takes the Internet that seriously. Child porn: This is an interesting one. Apparently viewing child porn has a high incidence of creating child molesters. This is based off a study conducted by the CIA and FBI to justify wire tapping, in the 80s. I'd really like to see this one revisited.
Way to go Google! Great aquisition, someone who's really passionate about getting the consumer what they want... how they want it!
As well as being an excellent developer, a great team leader, and interested in this work, he has his ear to the ground. Hiring someone like this is how to obtain the next great idea.
Give him the Google entry test... he was probably just to shy to apply and will pass making him a full Googler. Otherwise he'll feel like an outsider and won't get the respect he needs to make suggestions and manage a team.
Since the article is talking about heat the release of radiation seems probable. The issue then becomes what level of shielding is needed to encapsulate the heat and radiation. It might be possible to produce one of reasonable dimensions which leaks radiation, but to contain it safely (in case of a crash?) it likely needs extraordinary levels of shielding.
All of which needs to be disposed of the way we dispose of decommissioned reactors, basically sticking it somewhere for a hell of a long time. Nuclear might be viable once we get over our fear of Breeder reactors, of which the only remaining operational one is in France (Go France!).
From an engineering standpoint there are two possible solutions for the massive environmental impact of vehicles.
1.) Computerized navigation: allowing 50%+ drops in vehicle weight which would allow enormous gains in fuel efficiency (Electric or conventional). 2.) Replaceable batteries: Probably as bumpers... which is viable even with current technology.
That said Fracking is just about the worst possible thing you can do, it destroys the environment in several ways. It destabilizes the earth. Pushes INSANELY toxic substances directly into the water table. Renders large segments of the earth uninhabitable in the 50 - 100 year timeframe. It is so insanely bad it's CRAZY. I'd provide a link to an article but just Googling Fracking you can find your own.
What makes it even more insane that they're doing it near populated areas is that this is one of the most available fuels. There is an enormous amount pressurized all over the place, under the icecaps for example. This is madness.
So silly. Brittons are upset about a huge number of serious social issues. They feel their government isn't dynamic enough, their social services are garbage, that the rich are increasingly distanced from the poor, that housing is substandard, that immigration is out-stepping supply, that they can't compete with labour costs in other parts of the EU, that they have no manufacturing backbone.
The solution, to ignore these problems and dis-empower and disenfranchise their people? Genius!
At some point Britain's rich will have to deal with a rise in taxes (capital gains and inheritance taxes are the most obvious) or live like prisoners surrounded by guards in closed off communities.
Britain has high unemployment, skilled and educated workforce, modern manufacturing capabilities and outdated infrastructure.... it's time for a new deal.
This is what we need! well maybe not this tool specifically but something to get an overview of where ISPs put all that bandwidth they buy.
A couple years ago (in Canada) we faced a bunch of ISPs trying to jack up profits by cutting user speed. They claimed it would provide better service but obviously never described precisely what would improve... pings? Low bandwidth services? Throughput? Cached Transfers? It was never quite clear what "improvement" we'd see if we agreed to start paying per gig. The truth, obviously was no improvement and they were simply cost cutting in one of their smallest expenses, the bandwidth itself. Last mile infrastructure, packet inspection systems, caching of popular sites and videos are all continuing costs. Putting in a wire is expensive.... putting in a bigger wire isn't much more expensive... and there are some very big(High Throughput) quite cheap wires out there. I'm not sure how quickly fiber technology is improving but it's been "good enough" since the early nineties at least, pretending you need to up prices to be competitive is just silly.
"Better Facebook support. Like it or not, the iPhone FB app is a nose better than the Android one. HTC Sense and MotoBlur are steps in the right direction, but ideally, there should be a unified effort."
This is exactly why Android is going to be better than Apple. Apple is going to get in bed with Facebook and only support their app. Android has Bloo, an alternative app.
You can replace all the Google apps easily (not sure about Apple apps on iPhone) . Interestingly you can't remove them, but that's a "look and feel" branding effort that I support since selling used phones without a browser or email would really hurt their brand.
Ironically THAT could be his billable project! Giving people speed upgrades without erasing all their data... providing a phone that has had the attention of an IT professional (automagic (Trying to get this term see mainstream appeal, it means: Having your machine do everything that might be useful without user intervention") backups, better apps, under/overclocking, additional features etc.
I know it sucks for Google but when people figure out Android phones have a 6-7 year lifespan compared to iPhones with a 3-4 year they'll... not give a crap.
Even preachy environmentalists don't remember the 3 Rs... reduce, reuse, recycle. But throw one can in the trash....
Doing just this. It's recently gotten a lot easier with signed kernels and radios hitting the scene. Which means you don't need fastboot, very useful when you're doing multiple phones on a windows machine. For some reason the google usb driver breaks after each phone requiring a full reinstall. It's easier on Linux of course.
I also put a VOIP number/unlimited long distance forever with no bill on it:) Calling the company payoncephones(.com).
Anyway the community for the G1 (and many of the Android phones) is FANTASTIC. One of the best I've seen since my WRT-54G, (Tomato btw). They've got my phones up to 2.3.4, 5x the original battery life. 30% more available ram. 40% more on phone application space. Much faster storage thanks to EXT4... they've been FANTASTIC!
Anyway I'm offering reasonable pricing (both for upgrading and pay once phone forever VOIP). My website is phaistoscommunications.com, send me an email if you're in Toronto and need your phone upgraded. I ship phones all over Canada too.
Oh, and the upgrades you want are: HBOOT 1.33.0013d, Radio 27.08, Pershoot Kernel, Ginger Yoshi 1.2.1/ Beatmod/Lazlo(2.2)/AOSP(1.6).
Watch out for the unlockers, there's about 15 of them, 3 just take your money, some take your money and promise a refund (which I think they deliver but I think 1 doesn't).
Anyway I've chosen the G1 for it's amazing form factor but if you want any of these... http://www.cyanogenmod.com/devices bought cheap on Ebay and upgraded, I can do that too.
It's getting easier which is great! And Android 2.3.4 is AWESOME! Much much better than my GF's iPhone 4 for the hardcore! Best of luck all of you Android Modders!
P.S. sorry about the crappy website... info's all useful though!
Totally agree, I'm excellent at the conceptual stuff but only a decent programmer.
Fortunately I have a second degree and arrived as an IT consultant.
There definitely needs to be an improvement in how code is taught or designed. It should start from the most common program and have you edit it to taste rather than starting as a blank slate.
Most programming is essentially well researched equations sandwiched inside a Viso sheet, once you realize that all data is equivalent it's conceptually pretty simple. Then you have to convert your string into a bytestream.... then into an object wrapping a bytestream. Then you're sad. Then you find perl.
I do this, if you're in Canada. Service called pay once phone forever. Nothing fancy just retail, jailbreaking, unlocking and rooting. I have also found some very cheap 4G data services.
I'd like to do research and produce a U.S. phone, info@phaistoscommunications.com if you want details and recommendations.
I don't know about that, I would think you'd want your number available from a bunch of physical phones.
Also for traveling overseas wi-fi is better than Ethernet in most places.
I figured if people were going to pay a bit for hardware it should be one with a future, an Android phone. Can be picked up for about $180 used and updated with newest rom (Cyanogen has > 500,000 users). You want something flexible if your phone # is going to be attached to it, and probably call forwarding if you're going to be outside Internet and into cell territory (Sigh, Wi-Max would make them the same, so could 802.11n/i). Anyway since those wireless techs aren't available on any quality devices (Nexus S [no keyboard] iPhone 4 which has a host of killer issues) you'll have to get two generations of it, having a cellphone that always has free calling is nicer long term.
Are you serious? If it's MS they've been planning this for months. They probably have written a bunch of code for the "SDK" (read: reverse engineered). Don't think companies can't move fast, if they were willing to spend $X then they're willing to spend $X + $Y where Y is preparation.
This is a very bad thing for consumers. While Skype isn't the monopoly in the desktop VOIP space that it used to be. This means Microsoft controls a growing percentage of phone calls and Google controls a growing percentage of information and phone architecture.
It's a war over a technology (SIP VOIP) 20 years old. I'm not sure that Skype or any of the remaining VOIP providers have the guts to stand up to Microsoft and the ethics to turn down bribes, especially from governments. Embrace, extend (which is the scary part, extinguish there's no reason Skype couldn't achieve total dominance in the U.S. they now have unlimited marketing money.
SIP of course ties into the phone lines and puts the user in control. I recommend some products on my website.
For a freebie if you're thinking of replacing Skype try Nimbuzz it has all the functionality of Skype, better pricing and it's based in the Netherlands, it's also a multiclient IM and comes for all the phone platforms (except probably linux.). Nimbuzz is also better because they were allowing Skype users in their network till Skype pulled the plug. I just get the feeling they want to get along with other providers and Skype, well, doesn't.
Nimbuzz, better audio quality... it's also a multi client IM (used to support Skype until Skype found out how popular it was getting and sued.
Of course that's only a part of the full solution... check the website in my sig for a full solution. Don't rack up another 200+ roaming charge cell bill.
Wonder what he was working on, must have been exciting to kill his GF and so deftly curb his alibi. This reminds me of some conversations I've had, I'm a kind of remote person, it really helps with "cold reading". But as soon as people learn I have a comp sci degree they look at me like I figured it all out with "hacker tricks".
It's possible he's guilty, if so a loss to VOIP, our best bet for free anonymous communications.
But maybe he's being penalized for his specialized skills. This is why the stupid are so cohesive, they know the intelligent can lie to them with impunity.
I'm looking for a "stupid" charming sales person for my own voip company, we perfectly replace something people are paying $120 a month for with a $10 a month system, guess how many customers we have:(
The Russians did it and it worked.
Remember in space there's no atmosphere so you can have a mirror microns thick with no problem.

You're idiots if you think they use their real tools outside of a war.
Only $499?! Wow!
And how about with a case, headphones, keyboard, all the other things that come standard on a laptop for half the price? A replaceable battery? Standard SIM slot? Unlocking? Jailbreaking? Productivity apps?
The thing is a glorified touch phone.
How do we get on this "Target Market" gravy train?

Want a 3D space modelled? Click Click.
Want a gun model? Click Click Click.
It's unmanned, I mean I love technology but does this have any applications outside of the military?
How about working to make civilian flight cheaper/faster.
No.
