On the other hand opt out should take no time at all which is impossible.
Spam needs to be regulated.
On an interesting side note in Asia they have a system whereby cabbies are paid to take you to stores where you pretend to be interested in purchasing something then decide at the last minute not to. They get paid about $2 a head.
Which isn't as much as most people's time is worth.
Advertising on the internet is the first chance for people to say, my income is $120 a day pay me $13 and I'll look at an hour of spam.
It terrifies advertisers to know that the true costs of being advertised to will become apparent while the advantages of advertising will not disapear.
Personally I expect advertising to start promoting figures instead of brands on the internet.
If I advertise a 160 gb hd for $50 then people would be interested, if it has to be legit they will be very interested. I need to advertise or no one will find out about this great deal. So there will always be spam, but at some point it will have a purpose.
If you have a 160 Gb SATA 7200 HD for $50 cdn message me:)
Time spent reading spam (or sitting in traffic) should be weighed at about 12.5 hours a day which is the approximate time a human is not spending on maintenance of one kind or another.
Opt in does not nescessarily mean that you said to the spammer "Hey send me some info about my penis." It means you gave your e-mail address to a peice of software that said somewhere in it's agreements that it was free to do what it wanted with your e-mail address, (Or spyware). Which is legitimate.
What isn't legit is when they track down your e-mail from a website and start spamming, (Or start spamming your blog/bbs which I am getting these days). This the government could easily crack down on with hidden e-mail addresses in websites. In fact this should definitly be hit by the government with the same ferocity that they went after phone book call operators.
Just a question has anyone else gotten calls from people who pay you to do surveys?
Well many of the best free industries in the world were built upon the concept of advertising.
Television radio the internet.
Heck half the internet sites you read are supported by advertising.
Also most of the spam you read is actually solicited though indirectly. I have a domain and when I register with a website I use their domain as mye-mail address ie ign@blah.com, gamespy@blah.com and you find what comes out of the woodwork.
Well since it means a standard it should lower costs
But perhaps more importantly from a MS standpoint it brings the power of the implementation to the fore, something they seem quite interested in doing as they are close partners with Intel.
At 10 mb per message this takes a lot of the usefulness out of this solution:(
I can't store my travel pictures there for example.
I understand that HD space is probably pretty cheap compared to the kind of bandwidth I'd likely use but still.
Really even 1 TB per user isn't very much. Considering how few users will use even 1/1000th of it (I mean slashdot users are like OMG it's huge, think of *sigh* Joe Sixpack).
AMD processor design is run in conjunction with Sun and Apple and several other companies. Basically they have several sets of labs all trying diffrent things.
Hence, hypertransport + On Chip Memory + efficient design all comming at once as opposed to intels slow and steady approach.
I started using XviD after watching an increadible encoding of Equilibrium.
But as an end result there are other problems. System resources used are simply too high, video is comming to handhelds and cpu power will be low and battery life limited.
Xvid needs to be able to produce streams that a p133 can decode using only >50% system resources. Also it needs better sync management.
Really no codec is at a production level quality yet. Mpeg 2 has a lot of advantages only ofset by huge size.
Governments can't monitor this kind of thing and allow small companies any freedom meanwhile large companies won't change their policies without some pretty serious badgering.
Consumers need to educate each other about where the pain comes or we'll all start having to expect 20% cost of getting screwed tax.
The rule in busines is that you never review past success or failure when considering a new business venture.
The concept of the Ngage was a fascinating one evidenced by it's presence on slashdot.
Also they don't need to do any more software work or developer work they simply need to rework the hardware and rebuild it probably one of the simplest areas for a company.
The NGAGe's model of liscencing old titles should make production cheap and they will have to keep updating the design anyway to play to the elusive phone purchasing market (What are there 10 billion phone designs?)
Hey I'm a complete coward and I've argued with several people holding machine guns. (AK47/M16 count?)
They might have used green camo because in the game that's what they wear?
This whole American army things sounds like a pretty super idea, great marketing for the army and with free online distribution (No publisher) they can get it out the door for a reasonable price.
Holycrap that's a brilliant Idea!
It would lead to all kinds of games with unbalanced teams.
Though I don't think that American's won because they used superior tactics, they won because they were more motivated as individuals.
Something the current U.S. army is learning about, fighting an enemy who will hide an rpg under their bed for 3 years before blowing up a tank.

$0.02.
You cannot.

We have suprnova but it's not enough.
:)
You do bring about an interesting point about the quality of free entertainment breaking down the social structure of society

Once they do something illegal it's easy for the government to pay some money with a credit card and track down the funds.
So basically the questionable legality of this is what keeps the spammers safe, not anonymity.

There is one it's called RealAlternative or something it's about 3 megs available from Suprnova.org.

$0.1768 (hey I live in Canada.)
Well I'm not a senior manager but my philosophy at this point would be something like.
"You will definitly be fired for buying Intel"
But perhaps word just hasn't hit the market yet.
You need an Xbox. A modded Xbox.
Then you can run everything RM QT everything.
Your comment about better quality is true.

It is dog slow.
Also it's purported DivX compatibility is a joke. Dual pass is questionable at best. And there is no streaming.
Now the last I can understand but when wm9 has streaming why can't XviD have a streamable mode?
Clearly these are more of a problem than cars in North America.
While we have a public transportation system and infrastructure that should actually be able to you know accomplish something.

Sigh, the thought of women who care about gaming nearly naked drives me mad.
Also any fashion statement which involves Nylon is cool.

Because people on Slashdot can easily run a dual boot and I'm sure many of the gamers do.
But when I take a break from work I don't want to restart and have to rebuild what I was doing in Linux.
The operating system isn't set up to handle it do to it's multitasking nature.
Opera is about the only program that makes it easy to get back to where you were.
Consoles need killer games which bring people over and so does Linux.
You are missing the point.
Copywrights need to be accepted in other countries for them to be valid... the E.U. can decide if itwants to honour American patents.
You mean like OpenGL?
Besides it's clear that there is no interest within the Linux community to attract a younger generation by promoting gaming.
As for Macintosh they don't want to worry about supplying the power for the price gamers need.
Except there are no games for OSX or linux so we can't switch.
:(
They have a monopoly for a reason
Um we're dealing with people with powerful graphics cards.
To them Tim Taylor is a power chasing panzy. OUGH OUGH OUGH
