Despite the fact that I am a dues paying union member, and had a brand new baby at home, I was unable to get one fucking cent for my contract labor. That is not IP, but actual work! Calls to the production company, management, &c. went unanswered, and I was left to figure some other way to feed my daughter. This is just one of very many examples of a musician being fucked out of his hard earned $, even though he signed a legally binding contract! I can't afford the kind of legal representation that Sarah McLachlan can, so I have to eat it. My daughter, wife and I say "Thanks a bunch, you fucking cunt."

The Squeezebox is the coolest AV thing I've seen in years. I don't have a TV or Stereo system in my living room; my house is too big to run the wires from my giant system downstairs. This thing is tiny, and with a decent set of powered speakers (I use ARs), I can put music wherever I want it for way less than the price of an amp. Friends over, out on the deck? Drag it out there and plug in the power and, BAM, 6.8 quazillion songs.

I suppose I could have a big beige 486 with a 15" monitor grinding away in the corner. Or I could have this tiny, extremely well-built, fan-less, silent box sitting on a shelf somewhere.

I don't work for them or anything, but if you haven't seen one of these in action, don't be too rash to judge it. All of my geek friends freak out when they see it. All of my non-geek friends just sort of haze over while I try to explain it to them. How perfect is that?

As a pro player, I find it very frustrating when I ask the "artist" weather that is supposed to be a dotted eighth note or not, and they just giggle and say, "oh, I don't read music, I just write songs."

If you can't read music, you can't collaborate with musicians.

virtually all of the people who hate cops have had prior run-ins with them... ie. they are some kind of scofflaw, or associate with such folks
That is such utter bullshit that even slashdot should be ashamed.
I have personally been assaulted by a gang of criminals while an armed, on duty cop watched and did nothing. Then, after I had been held down and kicked by the group, more cops arrived and accused ME of causing trouble.
I have been walking down the street in NYC with a friend and, since he is black, had 3 cops throw him against a wall and stick a billy club in his kidneys, call him 'nigger' repeatedly, and toss him to the sidewalk, all on his way home from work, at his taxpaying, law abiding job.
I have been riding in a car in Beverly Hills and pulled over and asked to show ID because the driver was black.
I don't hate all cops, my brother-in-law is a State Trooper, but I don't trust cops. I obey the law. I hate people who break the law, and I hate punk-ass chumps who get jobs as cops because they have been weak, pussies their whole lives and being a cop makes them feel like a big bad ass.
So why don't you check that 'virtually all people' crap and read up a bit yourself, dillweed.
  21. Re:Did anyone notice..... on Computers Replace Musicians In West End Musical · · Score: 2, Informative
Hear, hear! I've been a professional musician for 20 years. I've been very succesful, played on Broadway shows (the US version of West End), Grammy-winning multi-platinum cds, international tours and TV shows etc. If you listen to the radio or watch TV, you've likely heard me play. I'm not saying this to brag, but to concur, in part, to the parent.

I've spent most of my life practicing, and studying my instrument, easily enough time to have gotten a graduate degree. And I get: waking up in motel rooms, standing in line at airports, and very occasionally, being treated like a rock star. But the society in which I live doesn't seem to consider my contribution important. There have been a couple of years where I made >$80k(US), but those years meant 200+ days gone from my wife and daughter, round the clock. Factor in gigantic phone bills, the hefty tax on being self-employed, no insurance, and you start to think about a career change. I'm getting my CS degree right now. Please don't mention India.

Now, on the topic of using computers for *live* performances, many of the acts I've played with use *recordings* of music in their live shows, sorry, but it's true. I'm sure many of you have seen performances where this was going on and didn't even know it. Some people find this offensive, some don't. But the use of digital recording technology in live performance is very widespread, and acceptable to the music industry. In addition, the singers that you hear on records(sic) are most likely not really singing those notes, they are being manipulated by software, primarily for intonation. So maybe it's not so bad that they're not singing live, either.

The unions were able to stop this replacement of artists on Broadway, but they (we) likely can't hold out forever.
