  1. Mac OS X update vs. Windows Update on NTBUGTRAQ Bashes Windows Update · · Score: 1

I feel like such an idiot because I just saw some updates in WU and started updating...woops!
One thing I hated about windows update was the need to restart after nearly every patch... there was always something that couldn't be downloaded separately.
Mac OS X does restart after most major updates but thankfully you can download them all in one shot and there is no confusion between critical updates vs recomended updates (recomended by who?) vs non critical updates..
Mac OS X just throws everything into one file-eg. 10.2.7 or something. Rarely you'll find small security patches that need to get out quickly, they are very simply labled as: "security update 05-15-03"; which doesn't create the same update confusion seen on Windows Update- Most of the descriptions often left me wondering if they would apply to my configuration, or just simply break something.
So yes, Mac OS X update is easier- and was blasted for being insecure, but as far as I know Apple fixed it fairly quickly.
->Here's a simple idea for Microsoft, work with McAfee or Norton and bundle a virus/trojan scanner with all versions of windows- not only can you use your monopolistic powers to get it for virtually free... you could also reduce alot of the issues and risks associated with Windows, and perhaps use less resources when dealing with these issues.

Now these guys want to muscle there way into the handheld market! wonderful- the last thing I want is to be playing my PSP and see "disc read error".... or be on a train or in a car or something, and have the thing skip... and goof up- most likely everything but the music will have to be loaded into memory to prevent skipping, which means either an overpriced product, or an underpowered one...
I just don't know if I can trust a company that 'muscles' its way into business.

  7. How to power e-paper on Electronic Paper Advances · · Score: 1

If it uses so little power, it could be powered from the microwave energy coming from your cellphone, or other peoples cell phones around you. Perhaps the cellphone could be constantly 'connected' to the e-paper which would allow you to download new content, or surf the internet. The cellphone could also monitor power consumption needs and perhaps give the e-paper a little boost when needed.

  8. Re:A few things on Michael Robertson of Lindows Responds · · Score: 1

I didn't intend for that to come off as a computer snob, because I'm not- but the easiest way to protect yourself from viruses is prevention- Yeah it's true Windows has been insecure like outlook, or IE... but there are enough good options on the Windows platform so that, as a user, you can avoid trojans and viruses. Perhaps it was just luck on my part not getting a virus. Viruses are as much a social problem as they are a computer phenomenon, and like most nasty social problems they can be avoided through proper prevention. In the end a computer is only as good as it's user.

In like 14 years since I got my first 286-- till today running windows 2000 on a celeron, I have not had one virus!
I have had a ton of problems in that time though, killed one hard drive, and have reinstalled my systems a few hundred times... but still not one virus yet.
I use Mac OS X now, but I make sure that whoever uses the PC tries to do so in an intelligent way, like not open e-mail attachments unless it's a picture or a word document from someone they know.
We all make mistakes from time to time, but there is no reason to have viruses on your computer, and no reason to blame it on anyone but yourself.

  14. Why I watched Next Generation on Enterprise Getting New Aliens, Hairdos, Weapons · · Score: 1

The reason Next Generation was so good, at least in my opinion is that is strayed from atypical sci-fi plots.
It presented an idealized human race, but still was interesting given some minor conflict.
Of course that all changed and slowly became cowboys and indians in space.
Scrap the show, stop the fighting, maybe get more intellectual writers who actually care to examine what the future can be, and perhaps try and present new ideas to the viewer. The kind that cause introspection, like what it means to be human, or what if you were faced with some difficult life altering decision. Not how do we meet these new aliens with our new hair doo's.
Berman has issues, trying to make Star Trek mainstream is akin to trying to make pocket protectors a fashion statement- it's just pathetic. If they can write decent plots that don't seem to come from a cracker jack box, and hire some actors with a little bit of LIFE to them, then people will watch regardless of how geeky it seems.
Oh but wait a second, that might actually require work!

  18. VOD a diversion on The Future of Digital Video? · · Score: 5, Informative

Working in the video industry for 7 years-- from my experience things will never go the way of VOD. The Video industry believes they have found a sweet spot with DVD's at sell through price.
There are those in the industry that have been dipping in the VOD technology pot for some time with no success (blockbuster). And there are also those that want the industry to adopt the VHS rental model with DVDs released exclusively to rental (at a much higher cost to the rental store) and eventually releasing the disc for sale at a devalued price. This is unlikely because the cost to produce DVDs is next to nothing and the studios want to capitalize on high volume sales, which is exactly what has happened. It has been the revenue sharing companies pushing that model--cheap DVD's hurt their business.
Also there has been talk in the past of a business model where Theater, Video, and VOD are all released at once, and there is always talk of shrinking windows between sell-through and theater releases.
DVD's will continue to evolve, in the next couple years you'll have High Definition DVDs-- which are the next big thing (HD-VHS already exists for those with the cash, but its still very pricey).
The fact is studios are paranoid about piracy, they've seen what's happened to the music industry and will continue to try to pump out encrypted product at as high a bit-rate as possible- in turn, making it more difficult to pirate high quality movies.
Video on demand is just not going to happen like some people think, it will really just become the next incarnation of Pay Per View and really only eat into that customer base. The technology exists, and there have been tests of services from different companies all over the U.S. but it still isn't a business anyone is interested in.
It all comes down to corporate interest, Sony wants to sell high priced HD-DVD players, so then they can also sell the HD-DVDs to go with it. How will Sony, for example, make money from a VOD service when they are able to make more selling DVD players. You also have Panasonic/Matsushita, JVC-- and all the other major electronics companies foaming at the mouth for the missed financial opportunities on DVD player sales (due to some cheap players coming out of the south pacific). In the end it all comes down to how to make the most amount of money.
