Cocoa does not equate to better-
Cocoa is an application framework. It will not make things faster or better or whatever, If a Carbon app is optimized it will run as fast or faster then Cocoa apps (e.g. The Finder). Carbon and Cocoa each have their purposes, which is why they are used in OS X.
Give me Pac-Man!
Thats all I need... some Pac-Man, Galaga, maybe a little Tetris to mix things up.
Games may look better- but for the most part they've gotten worse. Look at the gameboy advance...2-d graphics (typically) and its still tons of fun. I totally agree with your post, but perhaps if they make doom3 for the ps2 or gamecube-- I'll buy it, (I could never support XBOX or Windows even while under the influenced of drugs)... and well we all know the state of gaming on the mac...
It's obvious that Netscape had a monopoly- What options did you have pre-ie if you wanted to get 'multi-media content'? The only one I remember is Netscape, It came bundled with my ISP software which came in a box of like 27 diskettes or something insane.
I remember when IE started it's mass advertising campagin for IE with those little 'Free Download' buttons. Not only did IE render pages correctly, if my memory serves me correctly it didn't use a 'times' like font, and in general had a more modern looking interface when compared to Netscape. Also Netscape tended to crash every once in a while, while IE seemed to be a bit more stable from my experience. Yeah I may have liked IE for superficial reasons, but most of them were a breath of fresh air. I switched to IE in those days, like most everyone else- Netscape was a Yugo, and you had Microsoft handing out brand new Toyota corollas for free...(if that analogy works) Yeah it may have been an ethically wrong move for Microsoft, but thats a whole other story. Mozilla might not have the same marketshare as Netscape did, but it doesnt need it. The beauty of Mozilla is that it's code. rendering engine etc. can be used anywhere in really anything- while IE (and Opera) are browsers... and if you want to build a solution for something else (with their code) you gotta pay the big bucks. I personally believe that Mozilla is furthering the open source movement, and that it has given the open source movement a ton of mainstream credibility that didn't exist back in the early '90s
I don't understand this company... they are a bunch of cry babies!
When Apple released Safari these fools cried a bloody river
Now after they complained about the cost of producing a Mac version of Opera... they release a linux version.
For some reason I don't expect this company to be around for much longer... just my opinion.
Perhaps you're right, my priorities might be wrong- I just have a higher expectation art. I really want it to be insightful, entertaining, and cool.
If I just want mind numbing retardation with a nice buzz- I'll just do speed or acid or something!:-)
I'm dowloading the trailer... but my only problem with Matrix is that it borrows heavily from other sources of pop culture- I'm sure if you were into the whole main stream hollywood stuff- this movie was fantastic... but if you read Akira way back when it came out or ghost in the shell, saw the subsequent movies- and well generally stayed in the realm of sci-fi- you surley noticed this movie was not shy borrowing from anime and sci fi.
I personally think the Matrix is cheese, it doesn't have a strong message, and is a little too melodramatic... in music, in story, in the overal mood of the movie. CHEESE..and not even real cheese, like cheeze in a can.
Its all about kick punch kick, run away, kick punch kick, 3d animation...
I'm sure I'm going to watch it- but seriously is this cheese really worth all the hype- there are so many other things (movies/comics/anime) that are just so much more deserving.
Sci-Fi movies have gone to shit- they are nothing more than overhyped action crapola- Star Trek Nemesis blew the big one, not to mention that flick with the electrocution/blow stuff up/jounrey to the center of the earth crap.
Minority Report on the other hand was great, and well if it counts Monsters Inc. was too- the only two sci-fi movies in recent memory I can stand... I'm sure given that this is slashdot I stand alone in this opinion... but that's what forums are for tight?... so enjoy the download:-)
There is extensive fiber oprtics networks all through baghdad- of course they were used for military purposes.
The best thing to do would be to repair the damaged sections and use that as a starting point after they have a government.
I think that's a great idea!
They could team up with the Gay Cross, which is helping to spread style throughout war torn countries!
This is like the perfect opportunity for geeks and gays to join hands and make the world a better place!
This is the perfect opportunity to allow AOL to try and get a monopoly in a new market! ...Of course it can't be called AOL... because the A stands for America, and we don't want to give the impression that we're colonizing the place
and well.. IOL (Iraq Online),,, might offend others who have connote the word Iraq with Saddam...
Well perhaps we could just tear something down and put it on ebay!
It's not a very well known fact but the company name 'MicroSoft' was originally coined by a girlfriend who was about to go down on Bill Gates when he was at Harvard....Micro-Soft became his nickname, and has stuck with him (and his company) ever since!
A good consultant shouldn't have to ask questions, a good consultant should provide answers.
There is no way that just one solution fits one particular problem, and it should be expected that you offer all valid alternative ideas before they even come to a conclusion.
Each company has its own prerogatives- and everyone (including management) has reasoning behind their decisions.
Consultants need to remember that their job isn't preaching personal beliefs- and sometimes the best solution isn't the most glamorous.
Basically there is more than one way to skin a cat, and often each company has to make that final decision with what they could handle financially and handle in the long term.
My suggestion really is to be more aggressive presenting possible ways to go around things way before they can even think of their best solution, just don't pollute the workplace with advocacy (whether that Mac, Linux....or Windows...) - There is no reason to get emotional; yes, the manager you're dealing with might seem like a total moron-- but I'm sure he/she has good reasons for what he/she does...
If in fact the management are a bunch of total morons, the company will eventually go out of business--so I guess unless you invest in the company... don't worry be happy!
... a group of lawyers in Cupertino, CA. have gathered together and are finializing their cease and desist letter.
I guess in a couple of days we'll be reading about how this guy is no longer making these.
Good-Luck John Fraser, you're going to need it!
Instead of actually using printers, lets try to encourage a paperless environment. At Work, Home, School-wherever.
It's way easier to e-mail a file to someone than print up pages and actually physically deliver it. Of course there is a place for paper and sometimes it's unavoidable. So start sharing those files-- you help the environment, screw over dell, and save money.
Thank God they used cartridges in this thing! That solves a plethora of headaches. Lets hope that the big software makers like Sony/Matsushita et al. decide to use cartridges when they release their (possibly blue laser) HD-DVD players next year (presumably). Nothing is worse than having media skip from a mere fingerprint or a slight scratch- especially when you are watching a movie!

...they got bought out, went open source.... a positive outcome! Perhaps when Opera goes under something good will come from it too!
Here is my Idea for the Ultimate diet:
STOP EATING!

You'll lose weight and muscle is overated anyway.

If had mod points, I'd give them all to you. The best post I've read on slashdot :)

I think you should write the program that relays your cellphone's blue tooth headset data to your mac, then to your headset! YOU CAN DO IT CAPTAIN!
+1 point for cyber sex hobbyists (If thats what you call em)
-2 points for privacy (How long will it be before we have spyware in our monitors)

Screw UHF... I just remembered how great Office Space was, if you haven't seen it- rent it!
It's to bad he wasn't still alive so he could watch his crappy novel become a crappy movie and fail miserably despite a decent budget and big actors.
