Patriotic Americans and other good people who value democracy should be sending a strong message to France that their intolerance and hypocrisy will not be tolerated, by boycotting French goods. This includes Mandrake. If you are looking for computer operating systems, I wholeheartedly recommend Red Hat, a Linux distribution made in America and supported by freedom lovers everywhere. If you support and/or use Mandrake, as well as other French goods, you are sending the wrong message to France that we as good, freedom loving people, will tolerate French injustice and hypocrisy. So do the right thing and help boycott French goods. For more information on the French boycott, see here, and here.
I've been a paying user of Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Utilities, and eventually Norton SystemWorks, for every edition since 1997. However, I refuse to use any product that requires activation. As such, I recently purchased NOD32 to replace the Norton Anti-Virus part of SystemWorks, but I have not been able to find anything that comes close to being equal with Norton Utilities for Windows. I thought I'd try installing just Norton Utilities from Norton SystemWorks 2003, but it's borked. Apparently it requires all of SystemWorks to function properly.

I know I'll get flamed should anyone bother to read this, but seeing as how I have a newer decent 27" television, I want to see the whole screen filled, not just parts of it. Yeah, yeah, parts of each side are cut off, yadda yadda yadda. But at least the scenes don't look so... shrunk and stretched.
So I get to make off with "only" buying the first DVD set of each LoTR movie, as only the first DVD sets come with a Pan & Scan version. I looked, but apparently the Extended versions are only in Widescreen. So New Line Cinema made it easy for me to choose which DVD set to go with.
You wouldn't imagine how difficult it is to get a movie on DVD as Pan & Scan. I usually have to specially order them anymore, argh.
I was wondering why Microsoft's Mac Business Unit has been so giddy the past couple of days... Microsoft Office on Macintosh has a nice two year window to continue reaping profits and further entrench itself.
Who cares about Georgey? Where's the interview with Mary Carey?! I'm sure my fellow Slashdotters would be able to come up with ten important questions to ask her...
I like how nine different vulnerabilities for Linux was discovered and announced two months or so ago, but people are incessently bashing Microsoft, when they released a patch to fix this bug a few weeks ago! Is it Microsoft's fault that most computer users and corporate IT staff are just too damned ignorant and/or lazy to go download and install a patch? Especially one that's made major news headlines for the past month?
I'm sure on the other hand that should an exploit be made for one of the recently discovered Linux vulnerabilities, which received little to no coverage on here BTW, and infected Linux users by the droves, people would still be hailing Linux and blaming it properly on ignorant and lazy Linux admins and IT staff.
Hint: America invented the Internet, and as a result is the most prevalent country on the Internet. Hint: This is an American website, with American staff. Hint: If you don't like that, too bleeping bad. Make your own website.
I'm buying the $200 license from SCO next week. I personally don't agree with GNU, in fact I agree with Microsoft that it's viral, however I don't particularly care for Microsoft either. While I like the BSDs (and support them by having a subscription to various BSD CD sets), I also like auto-setup, so I currently use and own a Linux distribution that automatically sets everything up upon install using some proprietary software, making it nice and easy. And just as I rewarded the makers of the Linux distribution I use by my purchasing the distribution and every version that has followed, I also want to reward SCO for any of its hard work that might, and probably did, wind up inside Linux.
In the meantime, I get to learn how to work around UNIX-like operating systems which will come in very handy. If it means I spend $200 to reward SCO's hard work and another $60 a year supporting the Linux distribution , so be it.
Heh... "everyone should have one." Maybe in Wonderland, perhaps. But not here and now. Out of over 100 people I know from family, friends, and co-workers that have computers at home, I am the only one that has a hub. None of the rest do, as they only have one computer each. I think this would be the majority of homes with computers, as only a minority even know that hubs even exist.
Maybe it's just me, and maybe I'm an idiot (there's always a good chance of that), but does using an Ethernet connection make any sense? Most computers used by typical home users only have one Ethernet port, and that's usually already used by their cable/DSL modem.
Meanwhile, there are plenty of empty and/or shareable USB & Firewire ports available...
Personally, I don't see the problem here. UPS, FedEx, etc. have been doing this for years. And honestly, the Postal Service needs to come up with something to stay alive... they're already talking about possibly eliminating Saturday delivery services due to low funds. If this helps funds keep rolling into the Postal Service, and makes people happy as it *is* one of the most requested services by consumers, the tax payers.
He's a bad guy because, even though he is a citizen of the United States, he admitted in court that he and his friends are and were willing to take up arms against the U.S. and its civilians.
But damn the U.S. for trying to protect its citizens from those willing and able to murder them! Damn the U.S. for protecting its national interests.
Oh, so, you'd rather have had a guy that aided terrorists out and about for five more weeks, where he could aid them even further and/or flee the country, just so you wouldn't have a guilty conscience?
Whatever you may think of the Justice Department, those were five weeks that he was alive. Can't say that for the nearly 3,000 people he helped murder.
Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, and the Red Team beam down to an alien planet -
Kirk - "Rodriguez, check to see what's causing that buzzing sound coming from the rock nearby."
Rodriguez (Red Team) - "Bleep you! Go check it out yourself! We've lost three Red Team members this past week that beamed down to strange worlds with you!"
So, since Mandrake is a French-based distro, does this mean it'll pretend that it doesn't understand English after you finish installing it? Or will it just promise to veto any program you install?
Dear God, no! That would only reveal the large heaving man-breasts of largely overweight Slashdot readers. Even the Slashdot server would BSOD on that, just to replace the screen with something less vile.
You'd also probably have a more intellectually stimulating conversation with the robot than with a high school-aged girl, these days.
Then again, most people have something else on their mind than intellectually stimulating conversation when in the company of a teen-aged girl. Although, this *is* Slashdot...
Since when was the GPL ever about freedom? It's as restrictive as proprietary licenses, if not more so. As far as I know, the only software license that endorses true freedom is the BSD license.

Close, actually it was Tennessee. If Al Gore gave up and acted like a graceful loser, none of that nonsense would have ever happened.

While we're at it, I'd like to see New Jersey be given back to the British, myself...
If the forefathers of this country were truly the wise men that history claims them to be, they would have let the British keep it.

You're being optimistic. 386 is my guess. Or even more dastardly, running it on a 286 and claim that Linux and its apps break on Intel hardware.

That has to be the most FUD-ridden article I've ever read. I thought Slashdot was for news, not liberal rantings. Or are they now one and the same?

Why would Voltron need a gauss gun? He has the Blazing Sword(TM)! Duh!
