Granted, I didn't register and read the full article text (i did read the press release though) but this rubs me the wrong way. It sounds to me like the exact same thing that pisses me off when I see commercials in a movie theater, or hear ads on my XM radio. I pay for this "premium" service, so don't shove this crap down my throat. If you want to put ads in something, do it in a freely (as in beer) available game.
That's what i'm most concerned with..I have never cared much about the noise level of SCSI drives in my SERVER ROOM. It's supposed to be loud in there. Lower power consumption is a plus.
Back to failure rates, I have noticed a slip in the quality of my Seagate drives lately (IDE, SATA, and SCSI). They just seem to fail more often than they used to. I used to brag about how rock solid my Seagates were. However, I also seem to remember Seagate extending their warranty coverage to something like 5 years? Maybe this is a sign that I just had bad luck with my drives..it's been known to happen.
Sure, I can help you out. Please type:
shutdown -h now. After that is complete, please place both hands on the sides of the monitor, lift it as high as you can above your head......now release.
My old windows box is hackerproof. It's unplugged, under my desk being used as a footrest. I guess my physical security could get a bit lax when I fall asleep at my de..........
As far as eumlation goes, I just make an ISO with imbNES and play it on my modded PSX. This way, I have every NES rom I could ever hope for on one CD. All ready to be played on my trusty Playstation.
i wonder what Hawking's thoughts are on the goatse guy. that black hole has has not only destroyed lives, it has destroyed itself!!

BSD For Linux Users

i saw this article yesterday posted on:
freebsdaddicts.org
and the first thought that came to mind was, "boy I hope this doesn't get slashdotted, because the linux crowd will have another BSD flame-fest." its not as bad as i thought it would be. the guy who wrote the article was really not judgemental at all, he made points to say "not saying one is better, they are just different." so cut him some slack..
It's very obvious that this guy is reaching here when he "Digs for Holes". It looks like instead of holes, he dug for BullS#!t, and found a lot of it.
Lets examine his points: Googlehole No. 1: All Shopping, All the Time
Hrmm, lets see. I'm looking for a Home Theater Receiver today, so I type in: "Pioneer Receiver". and I get mostly links to places selling them. But lets say I want a manual for my receiver, so I type in "Pioneer Receiver manual", the results
are much different. Thats what keywords are for...moron.
Googlehole No. 2: Skewed Synonyms.
If I type in apple, OF COURSE i'm going to get results about apple computers. Just add the word fruit to your search, if thats what you're looking for. Ask and ye shall receive, I dunno about you..but most of those links seems to be relating to fruit.
Googlehole No. 3: Book Learning
Ok, I won't blame this one on google, I think this is due to the internet as a whole. Why would I go to the library, when I can poke around on the internet for 20 mins...and get just as much research done. Give me a break.
These all may be obvious points, but I was bored...so I decided to point them out.
Yeah, it's real. I saw a copy of the ISO, and all of the files contained therein.
This should be great news for Nintendo..I mean, why was PSOne so popular? I'll tell you why, because I could get all of the games for free.
Lately a lot of people has shifted towards Battle Field 1942 though.... could be the next big thing..
next big thing? I thought Brock Lesnar was the next big thing. Maybe they don't get World Wrestling Entertainment in denmark.
The sounds are very odd/distorted/creepy to me (especially in the rythmic loops). Maybe this is actually an attempt to be contacted by aliens...I mean hey, E.T. had one of those....
I dunno, but I always remember hearing how rare of a find this Cart is. Now with E-bay, it seems to be fairly easy to get...but still, i'm sure there werent that many released in the US..plus, Dragon Warrior kicks ass!!!

DSL Rising

I have another point of view regarding Cable vs. DSL. I prefer DSL for a few different reasons.
1. Speed(downstream), now I know some of you will argue on this...but I have experienced cable in two different cities..and they both lack the speed of my DSL. Why? My guess is that the cable provider overloads their nodes to keep costs down....this results in horrible speed fluxuations during busy times of day.
2. Speed(UpStream) - I have compared this many times, and seen different results. But in my current location(south mississippi) the upload on my ADSL is quite a bit faster than cable in the same area. (i get ~30KB/s upload while cable seems to be ~15-20KB/s)..so my ping in quake3 just doesnt cut it in cable a lot of the time.
3. Looking towards the future, as neighborhoods fill up, and more ppl get cable modem...I see the speed really dropping to a crawl. In Memphis, TN I can see this at a few differet locations(friends with cable) during the middle of the night, their speed is unmatched..but during peak hours...it really slows to nothing. I prefer the consistency.
4. Support - I have never been in dire need of tech. support, but I have called my DSL provider about various things..and always gotten a good/fast answer. My cable company on the other hand...really sux in that area, I know from my cable TV experience, and from friends cable modem experience.
All of these things may be provider dependent but this is my 2 cents anyways....go for DSL, the extra few bucks is well worth it, for the stability that you recieve.

Maybe I am the only one here..and being that I haven't done any programming in a while might be the cause of this. But i have never heard of Eiffel, and I would honestly like to know a bit more about it...could any/. ers who've used it give me some input?
Or I could just go with the flow "this sucks! use C!"
i agree totally, the sad thing is Peer-Peer is the open door for newbie types who have no other way to get music or software. i cannot lie, i rarely pay for software or music, but i have NEVER used a Peer-Peer to get it. i wish this would all end, it brings alot of unwanted attention to the scene, before napster..I used good ole IRC to find FTP sites to get my music...now every one has access. peer-peer, a sad thing indeed.
I'm sure all of this spam mail hes getting has the same wonderful opt-out option just like all of his emails. "If you no longer wish to receive our mailings, please contact...", the funny thing is, i'm sure they are just as effective..not at all. Oh well, ive opted out of 100's of spam email, I think it just signs me up for more. Thats why I have a seperate account for that junk..
