Exactly. Ever since 9/11, we've been sacrificing freedom in the name of security.

This technology will not make our country more noticeably secure. If someone wants to blow up a plane, they will find a way to do it.

Our national security problems stem from our foreign policies and our general complacency and arrogance as a society. If we want to make ourselves more secure, we need to repair the fabric of our society and stop bombing the hell out of anyone who disagrees with us.

I agree. Flying anywhere has gotten absolutely ridiculous.

The security gates are like trying to get across the Berlin Wall, and anything in your luggage is fair game for baggage handlers. I had a digital camera stolen out of my bag the last time I flew, but you can't put locks on your luggage because it's a "security threat". For 2003, this sure feels more like 1984.

A favorite of mine is playing SSX Tricky with my gf. You can play competetively, but usually we will just take turns trying to get gold for every character, unlocking trick books, and figuring out the best path to take. It's pretty fun rooting each other on, too. :-)

Anything in the Guantlet series is fun, but it tends to get old failry quickly. And you can play Tekken Tag in co-op mode, which is always a blast...especially if you get another couple to play the other team.

Blaming external forces rather than those taking the action absolves everyone of responsibility, as our actions are always motivated by outside forces.
Agreed. Everything we do is in reaction to or influenced by our environment. It is how an individual handles that environment that determines whether they become a benefit to society or legal fodder.

I am sick and tired of people pinning responsibility on everything but themselves. That is the number one problem with our society today, IMO.

But with Apple's service the breakdown is more like this:

    Good CD = $9.95
    CD with 2 good songs = $1.98
    One-hit wonder = $0.99

    vs. Sam Goody pricing:

    Good CD = $16.99
    CD with 2 good songs = $16.99
    One-hit wonder = $16.99

Sounds like a much better plan to me.

The most glaringly obvious choice for me would be Extreme - Pornograffiti.

You remember Extreme, right? They had two awesome songs on that album: More Than Words and Hole Hearted. They were acoustic-based melodies with catchy lyrics, but everything else on the album was typical '80s big hair crap.

  21. Re:I wrote... on Female Characters - Empowering or Endangering Equity? · · Score: 1

You make good points, but I think the armies you build in RTS games like Homeworld or Command & Conquer reflect the current state of today's real armies. As far as I know, every army in the world is dominated by men.

This plays into the traditional male role of hunter/gatherer. Men (on average) are physically stronger than women, and are therefore expected to perform physically demanding tasks like galactic domination and waging war on the Axis of Evil.

If you look at how the US army is distributed, most women are communications officers or medics or some other non-combat position. So my best guess is that these games are less of a slight to female power roles as they are a reflection of the current state of combat.

  22. The real problem... on Female Characters - Empowering or Endangering Equity? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I think stores, restaurants, and all other businesses should stop hiring attractive women for any kind of sales position, because they are obiously only hired to take advantage of men's need to ogle them. Do you know how much useless crap I've bought from pretty girls? :-p

But, seriously...where is this going to end. People need to realize that there are differences between men and women. Does this mean that a woman is less able than a man? In some respects, yes...but a man is less able than a woman in some respects, too. Does that mean you shouldn't respect the other sex? Hell no.

If there were no differences between the sexes, we would all be hermaphrodites, or we would all reproduce with ourselves...and who would want to live in a world like that?

Video games are like epic novels...play them and enjoy them. The protagonists are idealic respresentations of heroes and heroines. The men in games are typically as unrealistic as the women, but yes, there are some games that pander to males. But if gamers weren't inside ogling the women in those games, they'd be out in the real world ogling high school girls.

All I'm saying is people who are frustrated with their own shortcomings shouldn't take out their aggression on everyone else by spewing words like "sexist" and "pigs".

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to play DOAXBV. ;-)
