  2. Spam is the killer on Spaf's Farewell, Ten Years Later · · Score: 1
By that I mean both spam posted to NGs and harvesting of addresses, which means you can't use a genuine e-mail address or you miraculously get 100 spams a week. Newbies can't cope with the "zog AT undeniable DOT net" business either.

In frustration, some of us set up a private NG using spare capacity at someone's workplace (him being the resident BOFH). No spam, no archiving, say what you like, use your real e-mail address, and all with the normal NNTP interface, unlike a crappy BB or FTP server. Anyone else gone this way? It's sort of like Usenet without either idiots or net nazis (I'm sorry, but it sounds as if Spaf was showing emergent net nazi tendencies).

True - for online gaming, 64k ISDN (all I can get here in the sticks) gives me even lower pings than people on ADSL or cable. Unfortunately this is only while playing the game, not in the initial server connection process, so often a RTCW server kicks me off and says "Server is for low pings only". I suppose the connection gets saturated with all the other data being received. Similarly, GameSpy reports pings of 400+ during refreshes, but once I'm actually playing it's more like 50ms.

iD and GameSpy really need to look at their algorithms for ISDN users.

  10. This will be used to justify "doing nothing" again on Still More on Global Warming · · Score: 1
OK, I don't know, and nor does anyone else, whether CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels are causing global warming. What I do know is that increasing the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere (at an exponential rate in some countries) is probably Not A Good Thing, from a risk point of view.

We should at least create sufficient carbon sinks (forests) to remove the amount we produce - or use biomass as our principal fuel, since it's carbon-neutral. There's no good technical reason why all new vehicles can't be built to run on biodiesel. It's widely sold in Europe and most standard diesel engines can use it. It creates CO2 when you burn it, but the oilseed rape absorbs the same amount of CO2 when it's growing in the fields.

Charging 430UKP a go for Office doesn't create wealth, it just sucks it in. When billg has so much cash he has to give half of it to charity, surely his pricing structure is a bit awry?
